Ursidae: The Undergraduate Research Journal at the University of Northern Colorado

The purpose of this research was to explore the personality indicators of traditional and extreme sport athletes. An online snowball sample of 149 athletes completed the 33-item questionnaire composed of personality indicators from the Myers Briggs Type Indicator and Zuckerman’s Sensation Seeking Scale. T-test results revealed that extreme athletes had higher Introversion, Perceiving, and Sensation Seeking scores than traditional athletes. Visual inspection of the correlation matrix of personality indicators revealed that the Myers Briggs type Perceiving was the most highly correlated variable with every factor of Zuckerman’s Sensation Seeking Scale. Overall, the study revealed that extreme athletes perceive …

Defining Support: Families Of Children With Special Needs And The Role Of The Speech-Language Pathologist, Robyn Moore Jun 2016

Defining Support: Families Of Children With Special Needs And The Role Of The Speech-Language Pathologist, Robyn Moore

Ursidae: The Undergraduate Research Journal at the University of Northern Colorado

Speech and language disorders are the most common reason for early intervention services in children under the age of five because these impairments can occur in isolation or with other disabilities. Early intervention seeks to lessen or even eliminate the need for therapy later in the child’s life by providing therapy for the child and education for the parents on how to foster their child’s language development. Parents of children with special needs often have more complex needs than families with typical children. This qualitative study seeks to determine what emotional supports families with children who have special needs require, …

Exploring The Outcomes And Perceptions Of Traditional And Post-Baccalaureate Asls Students, Kashia D. Bayard

Ursidae: The Undergraduate Research Journal at the University of Northern Colorado

An increase in the number of post-baccalaureate students returning to college for additional education provides a need to better understand this growing population. Studies on program outcomes for traditional and post-baccalaureate students have focused primarily in the medical and nursing fields. These studies lack detailed insight into the student’s experiences and perceptions. Within the Audiology and Speech-Language Sciences fields there is also limited research on traditional and post-baccalaureate student outcomes and experiences. This mixed methods study examined the outcomes and explored the experiences and perceptions of traditional and post-baccalaureate students in the Audiology and Speech-Language Sciences program at the University …

Postural Stability And Flexibility In Young Adults, Danielle Ingle Jun 2016

Postural Stability And Flexibility In Young Adults, Danielle Ingle

Ursidae: The Undergraduate Research Journal at the University of Northern Colorado

The components of postural stability and flexibility are considered essential to overall physical fitness and well-being. Previous researchers have evaluated the relationship between these factors in the elderly; however studies addressing the younger population in relation to implications of gender difference have been largely inconclusive. The purpose of this study was to assess the strength of the correlation between stability and flexibility in young adults as well as to evaluate ways in which the anthropometrical differences between men and women dictate flexibility performance. The present quantitative clinical study tested 20 young adults between 20 and 29 years in age, a …

Burden Of Disease Resulting From Lead Exposure At Toxic Waste Sites In Argentina, Mexico And Uruguay, Jack Caravanos, Jonathan Carrelli, Russell Dowling, Brian Pavilonis, Bret Ericson, Richard Fuller

Publications and Research

Background: Though lead contaminated waste sites have been widely researched in many high-income countries, their prevalence and associated health outcomes have not been well documented in low- and middle-income countries.

Methods: Using the well-established health metric disability-adjusted life year (DALY) and an exposure assessment method developed by Chatham-Stephens et al., we estimated the burden of disease resulting from exposure to lead at toxic waste sites in three Latin American countries in 2012: Argentina, Mexico and Uruguay. Toxic waste sites identified through Pure Earth’s Toxic Sites Identification Program (TSIP) were screened for lead in both biological and environmental sample media. Estimates …

The pathways through which behavior change interventions impact breastfeeding practices have not been well studied. This study aimed to examine: (1) the effects of exposure to mass media and interpersonal counseling on exclusive breastfeeding (EBF) and hypothesized psychosocial determinants (i.e. knowledge, intention, beliefs, social norms, and self-efficacy); and (2) the pathways through which exposure to mass media and interpersonal counseling are associated with EBF. We used survey data from mothers with children< 2 year (n = 2045) from the 2013 process evaluation of Alive & Thrive’s program in Viet Nam. Multiple linear regression analyses and structural equation modeling were used to estimate effects. Exposure to mass media only, interpersonal counseling only, both or neither was 51%, 5%, 19% and 25%, respectively. Exposure to both mass media and interpersonal counseling had additive effects on EBF as well as on related psychosocial factors, compared with no exposure. For example, EBF prevalence was 26.1 percentage points (pp) higher in the group that received interpersonal counseling only, 3.9 pp higher in the mass media group and 31.8 pp higher in the group that received both interventions. As hypothesized, more than 90% of the total effect of the two interventions on EBF was explained by the psychosocial factors measured. Our findings suggest that combining different behavior change interventions leads to greater changes in psychosocial factors, which in turn positively affects breastfeeding behaviors.

ETSU Faculty Works

Background

Buprenorphine is a semi-synthetic opioid used for the treatment of opioid dependence. Opioid use, including buprenorphine, has been increasing in recent years, in the general population and in pregnant women. Consequently, there has been a rise in frequency of neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS), associated with buprenorphine use during pregnancy. The purpose of this study was to investigate correlations between buprenorphine and buprenorphine-metabolite concentrations in cord blood and onset of NAS in buprenorphine exposed newborns.

Methods

Nineteen (19) newborns who met inclusion criteria were followed after birth until discharge in a double-blind non-intervention study, after maternal consent. Cord blood and …

Antenatal Glucocorticoid Treatment Is Associated With Diurnal Cortisol Regulation In Term-Born Children, M. N. Edelmann, Curt A. Sandman, Laura M. Glynn, D. A. Wing, Elyssia Poggi Davis

Psychology Faculty Articles and Research

Due to the rapid developmental changes that occur during the fetal period, prenatal influences can affect the developing central nervous system with lifelong consequences for physical and mental health. Glucocorticoids are one of the proposed mechanisms by which fetal programing occurs. Glucocorticoids pass through the blood-brain barrier and target receptors throughout the central nervous system. Unlike endogenous glucocorticoids, synthetic glucocorticoids readily pass through the placental barrier to reach the developing fetus. The synthetic glucocorticoid, betamethasone, is routinely given prenatally to mothers at risk for preterm delivery. Over 25% of the fetuses exposed to betamethasone will be born at term. Few …

Botanical Therapeutics In The Modern World, Vyacheslav Dushenkov, Brittany L. Graf, Mary Ann Lila

Publications and Research

Plants are the source of a broad spectrum of biologically active phytochemicals. For effective defense against pathogens and abiotic stress, plants have developed complicated chemical strategies with different mechanisms of action. By harnessing these phytochemicals, humans have used plants for medicinal purposes for over 30,000 years, and they remain a valuable source for the development of modern therapeutics. Plant-derived materials are utilized as pharmaceuticals, botanical drugs, dietary supplements (nutraceuticals), functional food ingredients, and cosmeceuticals. The Global Institute for Bioexploration (GIBEX), an international conglomerate of researchers, is involved in multiple botanical therapeutics discovery and development programs.

A Cell Cycle-Regulated Toxoplasma Deubiquitinase, Tgotud3a, Targets Polyubiquitins With Specific Lysine Linkages, Animesh Dhara, Anthony P. Sinai

Microbiology, Immunology, and Molecular Genetics Faculty Publications

The contribution of ubiquitin-mediated mechanisms in the regulation of the Toxoplasma gondii cell cycle has remained largely unexplored. Here, we describe the functional characterization of a T. gondii deubiquitinase (TGGT1_258780) of the ovarian-tumor domain-containing (OTU) family, which, based on its structural homology to the human OTUD3 clade, has been designated TgOTUD3A. The TgOTUD3A protein is expressed in a cell cycle-dependent manner mimicking its mRNA expression, indicating that it is regulated primarily at the transcriptional level. TgOTUD3A, which was found in the cytoplasm at low levels in G1 parasites, increased in abundance with the progression of the …

Cyclic Di-Gmp-Regulated Periplasmic Proteolysis Of A Pseudomonas Aeruginosa Type Vb Secretion System Substrate, Richard B. Cooley, T. Jarrod Smith, Wilfred Leung, Valerie Tierney, Bradley Borlee, George A. O'Toole, Holger Sondermann

Dartmouth Scholarship

We previously identified a second-messenger-regulated signaling system in the environmental bacterium Pseudomonas fluorescens which controls biofilm formation in response to levels of environmental inorganic phosphate. This system contains the transmembrane cyclic di-GMP (c-di-GMP) receptor LapD and the periplasmic protease LapG. LapD regulates LapG and controls the ability of this protease to process a large cell surface adhesin protein, LapA. While LapDG orthologs can be identified in diverse

Microrna Mir-155 Is Necessary For Efficient Gammaherpesvirus Reactivation From Latency, But Not For Establishment Of Latency, Rebecca L. Crepeau, Peisheng Zhang, Edward J. Usherwood

Dartmouth Scholarship

MicroRNA-155 (miR-155) has been shown to play significant roles in the immune response, including in the formation of germinal centers (GC) and the development and maturation of T follicular helper (Tfh) cells. There is in vitro evidence to support a critical role for cellular miR-155 and viral miR-155 homologs in the establishment of gammaherpesvirus latency in B cells. We sought to determine the contribution of miR-155 to the establishment and maintenance of latency in vivousing murine gammaherpesvirus (MHV-68) infection. MHV-68-infected mice deficient in miR-155 exhibited decreases in GC B cells and Tfh cells. However, the frequencies of spleen cells …

International Journal of Faith Community Nursing

Faith Community Nurses have common beliefs, principles, ethics, and a level of trust with their population making them well-positioned to positively impact parishioners. FCNs provide support for people’s spiritual needs and nursing care. This makes FCNs a vital and approachable resource for parishioners when seeking advisement and assistance regarding their mental healthcare. In this article, we define red flags as suicidal idealization, mania, and psychosis, which if not promptly assessed and referred for treatment may result in serious harm or death. These red flags are predominately found in people with schizophrenia, depression, bipolar disorder, and post-traumatic stress disorder. People with …

Can Faith Community Nurses Successfully Teach Parishioners About Advance Health Care Planning?, Joy D. Kimbrell, Cynthia Powers

International Journal of Faith Community Nursing

The primary intent of Advance Health Care Planning (AHCP) and Advance Health Care Directives (AHCDs) is promotion of autonomy by encouraging individuals to participate in health care decision-making in the event of a terminal illness or injury. In spite of this intent, there is a general reluctance to discuss mortality and plan for the end-of-life events as evidenced by the low percentage of individuals who have completed AHCDs. This lack of planning has resulted in much unwanted, futile, and/or expensive health care, and has been declared an imperative public health concern.

To address the low percentage of completion, a faith …

The advancement of nursing practice is supported by a plethora of theories, conceptual models, and theoretical frameworks. Additionally, the complexity of nursing and the profession’s ability to respond to diverse manifestations of patient or client response to illness manifests in a number of specialty areas of practice. Faith Community Nursing is a specialty area of nursing practice that appears to lack a specific conceptual model upon which to support the faith-based practice of Faith Community Nurses. The Tree of Life Model of Faith-Based Living, an adaptation of the Activities of Living Model, supports the faith-based practice of Faith Community Nurses …
