Social Inference And Reading Inference Generation In Typically Developing College Students, Pamela Wagoner Jun 2016

Social Inference And Reading Inference Generation In Typically Developing College Students, Pamela Wagoner

Ursidae: The Undergraduate Research Journal at the University of Northern Colorado

Although the foundational cognitive and linguistic skills of generating inferences in both reading and social contexts are similar, relationships between these two modalities, and with empathy, are unclear and have not been thoroughly studied. These relationships were explored by testing 30 typically developing college students’ ability to generate social inferences in the Eyes Test (Baron-Cohen, Wheelwright, Hill, Raste, & Plumb, 2001) and Voice Test (Golan, Baron-Cohen, Hill, & Rutherford, 2007), ability to generate reading inferences in the Inference subtest of the Watson-Glaser Critical Thinking Appraisal (Watson & Glaser, 1964), and their capacity for empathy from the Empathy Quotient …

Adolescents And Disclosure: Influence Of Stigma And Knowledge Of Psychological Diagnosis, Kyra Trimble Jun 2016

Adolescents And Disclosure: Influence Of Stigma And Knowledge Of Psychological Diagnosis, Kyra Trimble

Ursidae: The Undergraduate Research Journal at the University of Northern Colorado

Adolescents diagnosed with psychological disorders and their friendship groups are understudied. Factors that help a diagnosed adolescent decide to disclose this personal information to his/her friends is understudied as well. This qualitative study focused on the personal experiences of early and late adolescents who have disclosed mental health information to their friends. This study also focused on factors that would impact why, or why not, this group of adolescents chose to disclose this information. An in-depth interview concentrated on three themes: the quantity and type of diagnosis and treatments, health literacy, and stigma patterns. Health literacy and perceived stigma showed …

Factors That Explain The Use Of Complementary And Alternative Medicine In Undergraduates, Erin Sanchez Jun 2016

Factors That Explain The Use Of Complementary And Alternative Medicine In Undergraduates, Erin Sanchez

Ursidae: The Undergraduate Research Journal at the University of Northern Colorado

Complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) has been determined to be highly effective in treating health problems and improving the lives of college students. However, if students are not using CAM therapies, they are not receiving the benefits that CAM could provide them. In a small city, where CAM may not be widely available, CAM use may be low. The current study attempted to determine if trends in student CAM use in large cities are similar in a small city. A survey was distributed to undergraduates at a mid-sized university in the Rocky Mountain region, yielding 217 completed surveys. The survey …

Cue Reactivity Of Marijuana Craving: An Investigation Examining Cognitive And Academic Impairment, Daniel Vigil Jun 2016

Cue Reactivity Of Marijuana Craving: An Investigation Examining Cognitive And Academic Impairment, Daniel Vigil

Ursidae: The Undergraduate Research Journal at the University of Northern Colorado

Craving contributes to the development of substance disorders and is a significant factor leading to relapse. With the legalization of medicinal marijuana and retail marijuana in some states, understanding the effects of craving is essential. I designed an experiment to determine whether marijuana craving leads to cognitive and academic impairment among college students. I hypothesized that participants provided with a marijuana cue would demonstrate greater problems with working memory and reading comprehension than those assigned to a neutral cue control group. Eight university undergraduate students were recruited to participate. Though the study was underpowered, an effect size examining the impact …

The Effects Of A Twelve-Week Aerobic And Cognitive Training Intervention On Cognitive Function In Cancer Survivors, Jesus Medrano, Jessica Brown, Daniel Shackelford, Corey Beebe, Alyse Brennecke

Ursidae: The Undergraduate Research Journal at the University of Northern Colorado

There are more than 100 clinically distinct types of cancer, each having their own symptoms and requiring a different method of cancer treatment. Despite current advances, the positive effects from treatment are often matched and outweighed by negative effects. One of the most prevalently reported symptoms is chemotherapy-related cognitive impairment (CRCI). CRCI has been reported to negatively affect memory, concentration, reaction time, attention, cognition, organizational skills, linguistic abilities, executive function, and activities of daily living. Purpose: To examine the effects of a 12-week aerobic and cognitive training on cognitive function in cancer survivors who have undergone or are currently …

Understanding Reproductive Health Among Burmese Refugees In Greeley, Colorado: An Ethnographic Account, Alexandra Julia Krumtum Jun 2016

Understanding Reproductive Health Among Burmese Refugees In Greeley, Colorado: An Ethnographic Account, Alexandra Julia Krumtum

Ursidae: The Undergraduate Research Journal at the University of Northern Colorado

In the past four years, over 1,000 Burmese refugees have settled in Greeley, Colorado, but little is known about their conceptualizations of health or their experiences with local medical institutions. This paper investigates Burmese refugee women’s reproductive health beliefs and interactions with biomedical professionals. Through ethnographic interviews and participant observation, I show that a lack of mutual understanding between the two groups contributes to issues in communication and difficulties in promoting medical care. Medical anthropological research shows that culture has important implications for the experience and outcome of illness, as well as for the utilization of medical services and likelihood …

A Rare Case Of The Upper Extremity Diffuse Large B-Cell Lymphoma Mimicking Soft Tissue Sarcoma In An Elderly Patient, Aleksandra Mamorska-Dyga, Faisal Ronny, Carmelo Puccio, Humayun Islam, Delong Liu Jun 2016

A Rare Case Of The Upper Extremity Diffuse Large B-Cell Lymphoma Mimicking Soft Tissue Sarcoma In An Elderly Patient, Aleksandra Mamorska-Dyga, Faisal Ronny, Carmelo Puccio, Humayun Islam, Delong Liu

NYMC Faculty Publications

Diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) is the most common type of non-Hodgkin lymphoma, with about 30% of new cases presenting with extranodal disease. Lesions originating from soft tissues of the upper extremities are extremely rare and may mimic other malignancies like sarcoma. We present a case of an elderly patient with right upper extremity (RUE) mass which was proven to be DLBCL instead of sarcoma. We emphasize the increasing need for investigating new therapeutic options for patients of extreme age and/or with underlying heart disease.

Age- And Sex-Related Changes In Fasting Plasma Glucose And Lipoprotein In Cynomolgus Monkeys, Feng Yue, Guodong Zhang, Rongping Tang, Zhouquan Zhang, Liqiong Teng, Zhiming Zhang Jun 2016

Age- And Sex-Related Changes In Fasting Plasma Glucose And Lipoprotein In Cynomolgus Monkeys, Feng Yue, Guodong Zhang, Rongping Tang, Zhouquan Zhang, Liqiong Teng, Zhiming Zhang

Neuroscience Faculty Publications

Background: The age-related dysfunction of glucose and lipid metabolism has a long-standing relationship with cardiovascular and neurodegenerative disease. However, the effects of metabolic dysfunction on men and women are different. Reasons for these sex differences remains unclear. Cynomolgus monkeys have been used, in the past, for the study of human metabolic diseases due to their biologically proximity to humans. Nevertheless, few studies to date have focused on both age- and sex-related differences in glucose and lipid metabolism. The present study was designed to specifically address these questions by using a large cohort of cynomolgus monkeys (N = 1,399) including …

Quality Improvement Initiative In Transplant Diabetes Care: Needs Assessment And Protocol Development, Dawn Korson Jun 2016

Quality Improvement Initiative In Transplant Diabetes Care: Needs Assessment And Protocol Development, Dawn Korson

Doctoral Projects

Over 30,000 people receive a solid organ transplant each year, with 5-30% developing post-transplant diabetes mellitus (PTDM) (United Networking for Organ Sharing, 2015). At a Midwestern transplantation center, over 22% of patients with a history of diabetes were not consulted to endocrinology after kidney and liver transplantation. With poor glycemic control, there is an increased risk of developing PTDM leading to poor outcomes. Utilizing the Donabedian model and the Six Sigma’s Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve, and Control (DMAIC) as guides for implementation, the purpose of this project was to address the process measures of increasing appropriate consultations for evaluation and …

Cellular And Molecular Features Of Developmentally Programmed Genome Rearrangement In A Vertebrate (Sea Lamprey: Petromyzon Marinus), Vladimir A. Timoshevskiy, Joseph R. Herdy, Melissa C. Keinath, Jeramiah J. Smith Jun 2016

Cellular And Molecular Features Of Developmentally Programmed Genome Rearrangement In A Vertebrate (Sea Lamprey: Petromyzon Marinus), Vladimir A. Timoshevskiy, Joseph R. Herdy, Melissa C. Keinath, Jeramiah J. Smith

Markey Cancer Center Faculty Publications

The sea lamprey (Petromyzon marinus) represents one of the few vertebrate species known to undergo large-scale programmatic elimination of genomic DNA over the course of its normal development. Programmed genome rearrangements (PGRs) result in the reproducible loss of ~20% of the genome from somatic cell lineages during early embryogenesis. Studies of PGR hold the potential to provide novel insights related to the maintenance of genome stability during the cell cycle and coordination between mechanisms responsible for the accurate distribution of chromosomes into daughter cells, yet little is known regarding the mechanistic basis or cellular context of PGR in this or …

Research Brief: "Mental Health Of Transgender Veterans In Us States With And Without Discrimination And Hate Crime Legal Protection", Institute For Veterans And Military Families At Syracuse University

Institute for Veterans and Military Families

This study suggests that policies protecting transgender individuals from employment discrimination are associated with better mental health, as it found that transgender individuals represent one of the most marginalized populations in both civilian and military communities. In practice, employers should continue encouraging a safe and welcoming environment for all employees, including individuals who identify as transgender, and medical providers serving transgender veterans should consider evaluating their patients’ mental health. In policy, policymakers might continue efforts to reduce discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity and might consider introducing bills to protect LGBTQ+ persons. Suggestions for future study include sampling …

Assessing Occupational Noise Exposure Of Service Members In Aerospace Ground Equipment (Age) Maintenance, Brandon Dewayne Lavender Jun 2016

Assessing Occupational Noise Exposure Of Service Members In Aerospace Ground Equipment (Age) Maintenance, Brandon Dewayne Lavender

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Noise exposure is one of the most common hazards in the work force. There are multiple occupations that experience large amounts of noise exposure to its employees on a regular basis. Flight ground crews and flight maintenance personnel are among the nosiest jobs that exist. Despite the mandatory hearing protection requirements for a job of this caliber, there still remains a chance of an over exposure to noise. Most of the exposure comes from the different types of loud repair equipment and tools, but the greatest exposure comes from a jet engine that can reach 140 decibels. Flight maintenance personnel …

Private Vs. Public Healthcare In South Africa, Montgomery Young Jun 2016

Private Vs. Public Healthcare In South Africa, Montgomery Young

Honors Theses

This paper explores the South African healthcare system in regards to the gap between the private and public healthcare sectors. Public healthcare is government funded and offered to all citizens of South Africa, but there are many disadvantages such as long wait times, rushed appointments, old facilities, and poor disease control and prevention practices. Citizens can opt to purchase private insurance in order to be treated at private hospitals and health clinics. The private healthcare sector has many perks that set it apart from public healthcare, such as short wait times, appointments are not rushed, better facilities, and proper disease …

The Impact Of Residence On Dietary Intake, Food Insecurity, And Eating Behavior Among University Undergraduate Students, Kittra Gonzales

Ursidae: The Undergraduate Research Journal at the University of Northern Colorado

University students are overlooked as a nutritionally at-risk population in regards to poor dietary intake, food insecurity, and eating behavior. The purpose of this study was to determine if residence has an impact on university students' diets and dietary practices in addition to which residence type (on-campus, off-campus, or family home) more closely meets dietary recommendations established by the US Department of Agriculture. An online Qualtrics survey was designed and distributed to University of Northern Colorado undergraduate students. Results concluded there were few yet impressionable dietary differences according to residence type which could contribute to nutrition-related health risks.

Contributing Factors Of Success In Speech Fluency Therapy, Evelyn Ortega Jun 2016

Contributing Factors Of Success In Speech Fluency Therapy, Evelyn Ortega

Ursidae: The Undergraduate Research Journal at the University of Northern Colorado

Since the inception of stuttering therapy, the field of speech-language pathology has become increasingly evidence based; its affects have lead clinicians to come up with better techniques that can be successful. However, there are still some gaps in research that need to be analyzed. Recent research has shown both the clinician’s point of view and the experiences and perceptions of clients that should also be considered in treatment planning. Not only is it important to view the stuttering behavior, but also to view the byproducts of the speech disorder. These byproducts of stuttering are not separate from therapy sessions; they …
