Cervical Disc Herniation With Myelopathy Following Cervical Tuina Manipulation, Valeria Jia-Yi Chiu, Shu-Yuan Chou, Yu-Ting Hsieh, Yi-Shiung Horng

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Complications following cervical manipulation can be classified as cerebrovascular or noncerebrovascular complications. The former complications occur more frequently, and they are usually due to vertebral artery occlusion, damage or thrombus formation. The latter include spinal cord or nerve root injuries and have seldom been reported. Herniation of the cervical disc with myelopathy following manipulation is rare. However, we have encountered two patients who developed cervical disc herniation with myelopathy secondary to cervical tuina manipulation for nuchalgia at the bone setting facilities. One of the patients suffered from shooting pain during manipulation and developed tetraparesis two days later. An MRI examination …

A Casereport Of Concomitant Injection Of Botulinum Toxin Type A In Detrusor And External Sphincter For Treatment Of Neurogenic Bladder Dysfunction, Sheng-Wei Zeng, Yu-Hui Huang

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Patients with spinal cord injury above the sacral level usually have spastic type neurogenic bladder dysfunction (NBD). Spastic NBD is usually manifested with detrusor overactivity and detrusor-external sphincter dyssynergia (DESD). Botulinum toxin type A (BoNT-A) injection has been used in treating spastic NBD for long time. This injection can be performed either on the detrusor (which needs an intermittent catheterization program and a greater decrease in intravesicle pressure) or on the external sphincter (which may cause urinary incontinence and a smaller decrease in intravesicle pressure). Here we present a SCI patient receiving a new injection method involving BoNT-A injection simultaneously …

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Machine crush injury is the most common occupational injury in Taiwan. Machines operated at high pressures and temperatures can cause severe injury to the hands. To improve functional recovery of the hands, pedicled groin flap transfer is recommended. This reconstructive option is useful and versatile for covering hand wounds. The transfer yields predictable results with a procedure that is substantially less difficult and takes less time compared with free-tissue transfer; the disadvantage is that the extremity must be immobilized. Pedicled groin flap transfer can cause some complications, such as joint stiffness and edema, which can be prevented through early intervention …

Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer-associated mortality in the United States. Kinase hyperactivation is a known mechanism of tumorigenesis. The phosphorylation status of the plasma membrane-associated protein myristoylated alanine rich C-kinase substrate (MARCKS) effector domain (ED) was previously established as being important in the sensitivity of lung cancer to radiation. Specifically, when MARCKS ED was in a non-phosphorylated state, lung cancer cells were more susceptible to ionizing radiation and experienced prolonged double-strand DNA breaks. Additional studies demonstrated that the phosphorylation status of MARCKS ED is important for gene expression and in vivo tumor growth. The present study used …

The utility of genes PTEN and FAS as prognostic markers for the identification of early and/or aggressive prostatic adenocarcinomas is seemingly validated in the study results we obtained using fluorescence in-situ hybridization (FISH) of archived paraffin embedded surgical prostate core biopsy samples obtained from two CLIA and CAP licensed anatomical pathology labs (Bostwick Laboratories, Uniondale, NV and GoPath Laboratories, Buffalo Grove, IL). From early benign subsets of sample cases to aggressive extracapsular invasive tumors, the presence of random deletions evolves into clonal populations of co-deletion of both genes at question. We identify independent research that demonstrates the ability of these …
