Machine learning methods continue to show promise in the analysis of data from genetic association studies because of the high number of variables relative to the number of observations. However, few best practices exist for the application of these methods. We extend a recently proposed supervised machine learning approach for predicting disease risk by genotypes to be able to incorporate gene expression data and rare variants. We then apply 2 different versions of the approach (radial and linear support vector machines) to simulated data from Genetic Analysis Workshop 19 and compare performance to logistic regression. Collection management for the health sciences, particularly clinical medicine, is an increasingly complex job which, anecdotally, is usually given to experienced librarians. Health sciences libraries tend to delegate collections responsibilities to one librarian who holds all of the institutional collections knowledge. Replacing these people as they retire or move on can be difficult unless new librarians become trained in collections work. At the Michigan State University Libraries, recent search committee experience revealed that an entrylevel health sciences collections position attracted fewer applicants than entry‐level health sciences positions for instruction, liaison, or educational technology. There is a need for education about and development of advocacy skills within student pharmacists. Pharmacy literature describes experiences incorporating advocacy education within curricula; however, these are often singular, limited experiences. To increase student pharmacists’ awareness, knowledge, and skills, effective advocacy curricular threads are necessary within curricula. This paper provides rationale for the need for a greater emphasis on development of these skills within student pharmacists, evidence of curricular experiences surrounding advocacy from the literature, initial observations from a piloted curricular thread at one school, and implications for the academy.

On October 17, 2016, the Maine Health Access Foundation (MeHAF) released a new research brief developed with the University of Southern Maine that found significant inequality in the ability of people in Maine to access quality health care. The authors, Barbara Leonard from MeHAF and Erika Ziller from the USM Muskie School, found that income, age and education are all closely associated with Maine people’s ability to receive appropriate and timely health care. Specifically, they found that among Maine adults 18 and older, those with family incomes less than $25,000 a year, young adults, racial and ethnic minorities, and people …

Nursing schools are operating at full capacity in order to address an impending shortage of registered nurses that may exceed 500,000 by the year 2025. This pressure on scarce resources elevates the importance of NCLEX-RN preparedness for nursing faculty, nursing students, and the public at large. Additionally, the ability to successfully prepare students to sit for the NCLEX-RN exam can affect the reputation of nursing programs throughout the United States. Background

The Joint Commission definition of a “Pressure Ulcer” is a broader term that includes decubitus ulcers but also includes any ulcerations associated with pressure. Over a three-month period in 2015 the Intensive Care Nursery (ICN) at Thomas Jefferson University had five patients who developed pressure ulcers due to placement of an improper size nasal cannula being used for that patient. Infant nasal cannulas are typically classified as being for micro premature, premature, neonate, infant and intermediate infant size patients. There is no instruction by manufactures for fitting a cannula to the actual size of the patient in kilograms. Cannulas …

Artist Alex Rheault approached the College of Dental Medicine in the fall of 2015 about collaborating for UNE Interprofessional Art Exhibition: Wonder. Rheault’s idea was to create an artwork informed by CDM faculty and students that would explore the fear and anxiety many people associate with dental care. The artist connected with students Jessfor Baugh and Riddhi Daftary. Through meetings emphasizing free-form discussion—with Rheault often drawing as a part of the idea exchange—an interdisciplinary collaboration was born.

This painting is a depiction of the emotions evoked by my journey with chronic pain. In the fall of 2009, I experienced an injury leaving me disabled for four years, I lost many things that day including my so-called identity as a young able bodied person. Though my journey with chronic pain was arduous, and at times, seemed endless, I continued to walk along my path to recovery, and today I am a successful premedical student at the University of New England working to pursue an education in osteopathy.

Following sensory loss, compensatory crossmodal reorganization occurs such that the remaining modalities are functionally enhanced. For example, behavioral evidence suggests that peripheral visual localization is better in deaf than in normal hearing animals, and that this enhancement is mediated by recruitment of the posterior auditory field (PAF), an area that is typically involved in localization of sounds in normal hearing animals. To characterize the anatomical changes that underlie this phenomenon, we identified the thalamic and cortical projections to the PAF in hearing cats and those with early- and late-onset deafness. OBJECTIVES: Ultra high field MRI at 7T is able to provide much improved spatial and contrast resolution which may aid in the diagnosis of hippocampal abnormalities. This paper presents a preliminary experience on qualitative evaluation of 7T MRI in temporal lobe epilepsy patients with a focus on comparison to histopathology.

METHODS: 7T ultra high field MRI data, using T1-weighted, T2*-weighted and susceptibility-weighted images (SWI), were acquired for 13 patients with drug resistant temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) during evaluation for potential epilepsy surgery.
