Implementation Of An Animal Assisted Activity Program Into A Rural Long-Term Care Facility To Increase The Perceived Quality Of Life Of Residents, Vonnie Pattison
Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)
people who have moved from familiar home surroundings to institutionalized facilities could find that the institutions will put restrictions on their personal belongings, possessions, loved ones, and pets. Loneliness and depression are common in long-term care facilities (Banks & Banks, 2002). Pets as therapy have been used in many institutions through implementation of animal assisted activity (AAA) programs with older persons to provide motivational, recreational, and therapeutic benefits to decrease loneliness and increase perceived quality of life (LeRoux & Kemp, 2009). Historically, animals and humans have been noted as possessing special bonds. The purpose and overarching goal of this doctoral …

Noise Induced Hearing Loss: The Impact Of Acoustic Trauma On The Ear, Aviva Levihaiem
Noise Induced Hearing Loss: The Impact Of Acoustic Trauma On The Ear, Aviva Levihaiem
The Science Journal of the Lander College of Arts and Sciences
Noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) is a pervasive disability that affects millions of people across the world. It is characterized by a decrease in hearing sensitivity to sounds that fall between 3000–6000 Hz(known as the “notch”). NIHL is caused by either a sudden acoustic trauma or long-term exposure to noise levels above 85 dB. The noise exposure induces overproduction of free radicals within the cells of the cochlea, overpowering of the ear’s antioxidant defense systems. The free radicals then destroy cell membranes and hair cell nuclei, causing necrosis and apoptosis, leading to hair cell death. This upsets the mechanical structure and …
Cell Surface Sialylation Status Of Monocytes And Macrophages, Henry Wang, Dan Wang
Cell Surface Sialylation Status Of Monocytes And Macrophages, Henry Wang, Dan Wang
Undergraduate Research Posters 2015
Sialic acids (SAs), a family of 9-carbon containing acidic monosaccharides, often terminate the glycan structures of cell surface glycoconjugates such as glycoproteins and glycolipids. The levels and linkages of sialic acids named as sialylation status vary as cell environment changes related to both physiological and pathological processes. Changes in sialylation of cell surface modulate cellular activity. SAs are highly involved in the immune system, however, the sialylation status related to individual immune cells and their activation state and functions are still unknown. In this study, we used a newly developed LC-MS/MS method to examine the cellular SA content during THP-1 …

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open
In this thesis, an image enhancement application is developed for low-vision patients when they use iPhones to see images/watch videos. The thesis has two contributions. The first contribution is the new image enhancement algorithm which combines human vision features. The new image enhancement algorithm is modified from a wavelet transform based image enhancement algorithm developed by Dr. Jinshan Tang. Different from the original algorithm, the new image enhancement algorithm combines human visual feature into the algorithm and thus can make the new algorithm more effective. Experimental simulation results show that the proposed algorithm has better visual results than the algorithm …

Gastroenterology
Context: Hemophagocytic Lymphohistiocytosis or the “Hemophagocytic Syndrome” is a spectrum of disorders of regulatory immunomodulatory pathways inciting phagocytosis of hematopoietic cells resulting in end-organ damage. The condition appears in both heritable and non-heritable forms from a multitude of possible environmental triggers, most notably infection. The condition often results in a fatal outcome without prompt diagnosis and treatment. Cases in children have been reported much more frequently and classically than in adult patients.
Case Report: In this case series we examined fi ve such cases in adult patients that were found at our institution in a window as small at 2 …

Enterogenous Cyst Of The Small Bowel Causing Intussusception In An Adult: Case Report And Review Of Literature, Nihar Shah Md, Therese Lizardo-Escaño, Hamid Shaaban, Gautamy Dhadham, Arya Karki, Robert Spira
Gastroenterology
Small bowel intussusception is a rare congenital disease entity, mostly manifesting before the age of two with abdominal pain and acute intestinal obstruction. In adults, colon intussusception is a rare event causing approximately 1% of all acute intestinal obstructions and they can occur idiopathically in adults or due to an intraluminal tumor mass. We report a case of an enterogenous cyst causing intussusception and iron deficiency anemia in an adult treated by surgical excision and resection of the small bowel.

Isolated Candida Infection Of The Lung, Yousef Shweihat Md, James Perry, Darshana T. Shah Phd
Biochemistry and Microbiology
Candida pneumonia is a rare infection of the lungs, with the majority of cases occurring secondary to hematological dissemination of Candida organisms from a distant site, usually the gastrointestinal tract or skin. We report a case of a 77-year-old male who is life-long smoker with a history of rheumatoid arthritis and polymyalgia rheumatica, but did not take immunosuppressants for those conditions. Here, we present an extremely rare case of isolated pulmonary parenchymal Candida infection in the form pulmonary nodules without evidence of systemic disease which has only been described in a few previous reports.
Ascorbic Acid And Ascorbate-2-Phosphate Decrease Hif Activity And Malignant Properties Of Human Melanoma Cells, Sarah Miles, Adam P. Fischer, Sandeep J. Joshi, Richard M. Niles
Ascorbic Acid And Ascorbate-2-Phosphate Decrease Hif Activity And Malignant Properties Of Human Melanoma Cells, Sarah Miles, Adam P. Fischer, Sandeep J. Joshi, Richard M. Niles
Biochemistry and Microbiology
Background: Hypoxia inducible factor-1 alpha (HIF-1α) is thought to play a role in melanoma carcinogenesis. Posttranslational regulation of HIF-1α is dependent on Prolyl hydroxylase (PHD 1–3) and Factor Inhibiting HIF (FIH) hydroxylase enzymes, which require ascorbic acid as a co-factor for optimal function. Depleted intra-tumoral ascorbic acid may thus play a role in the loss of HIF-1α regulation in melanoma. These studies assess the ability of ascorbic acid to reduce HIF-1α protein and transcriptional activity in metastatic melanoma and reduce its invasive potential.
Methods: HIF-1α protein was evaluated by western blot, while transcriptional activity was measured by HIF-1 HRE-luciferase reporter …

Nutrition education is an essential component of medical education if new physicians are to be equipped to address common chronic diseases, including obesity and the associated diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and cancer. Most medical students recognize this need and desire nutrition education; however, finding time in a medical school curriculum and funding are challenging. Available, free online resources and small group exercises can be utilized to provide basic, up-to-date nutrition information to medical students.
Telepsychiatry And Mental Health Care For Syrian Refugees In Turkey, Moustafa Moustafa
Telepsychiatry And Mental Health Care For Syrian Refugees In Turkey, Moustafa Moustafa
Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library
The Syrian conflict is now in its fourth year and has produced one of the largest humanitarian disasters since the Cold War. Violent fighting and aerial bombings in many of the country’s major cities have resulted in massive numbers of internally and externally displaced Syrians, many psychologically traumatized and in need of expert mental health attention. The influx of refugees into Syria’s neighboring countries of Lebanon, Jordan and Turkey has stressed already strained health systems. The ability to deliver mental health care is inextricably linked to the existing health care infrastructure—a dynamic and often unstable institution as refugees migrate from …

RNAi-based strategies have been used for hypomorphic analyses. However, there are technical challenges to achieve robust, reproducible knockdown effect. Here we examined the artificial microRNA (amiRNA) architectures that could provide higher knockdown efficiencies. Using transient and stable transfection assays in cells, we found that simple amiRNA-expression cassettes, that did not contain a marker gene (-MG), displayed higher amiRNA expression and more efficient knockdown than those that contained a marker gene (+MG). Further, we tested this phenomenon in vivo, by analyzing amiRNA-expressing mice that were produced by the pronuclear injection-based targeted transgenesis (PITT) method. While we observed significant silencing of the …

3d Mr Ventricle Segmentation In Pre-Term Infants With Post-Hemorrhagic Ventricle Dilation, Wu Qiu, Jing Yuan, Jessica Kishimoto, Yimin Chen
Anatomy and Cell Biology Publications
Intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH) or bleed within the brain is a common condition among pre-term infants that occurs in very low birth weight preterm neonates. The prognosis is further worsened by the development of progressive ventricular dilatation, i.e., post-hemorrhagic ventricle dilation (PHVD), which occurs in 10-30% of IVH patients. In practice, predicting PHVD accurately and determining if that specific patient with ventricular dilatation requires the ability to measure accurately ventricular volume. While monitoring of PHVD in infants is typically done by repeated US and not MRI, once the patient has been treated, the follow-up over the lifetime of the patient is …

Quantification Of Cerebral Ventricle Volume Change Of Preterm Neonates Using 3d Ultrasound Images, Yimin Chen, Jessica Kishimoto, Wu Qiu, Sandrine De Ribaupierre, Aaron Fenster, Bernard Chiu
Anatomy and Cell Biology Publications
Intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH) is a major cause of brain injury in preterm neonates. Quantitative measurement of ventricular dilation or shrinkage is important for monitoring patients and in evaluation of treatment options. 3D ultrasound (US) has been used to monitor the ventricle volume as a biomarker for ventricular dilation. However, volumetric quantification does not provide information as to where dilation occurs. The location where dilation occurs may be related to specific neurological problems later in life. For example, posterior horn enlargement, with thinning of the corpus callosum and parietal white matter fibres, could be linked to poor visuo-spatial abilities seen in …

Temperamental Variation In Learned Irrelevance In Humans, Aleksandra Gruszka, Adrian M. Owen
Anatomy and Cell Biology Publications
BACKGROUND Learned irrelevance (LIRR) represents one of the mechanisms of attentional set-shifting and refers to the inability to attend to, or to learn about, any aspect of a stimulus previously experienced as irrelevant. Although it has been extensively studied in the context of clinical populations, not much is known about LIRR effects in relation to normal variation in individual differences. The present study was designed to assess how temperamental factors may modulate LIRR. PARTICIPANTS AND PROCEDURES Sixty-eight healthy volunteers performed a visual discrimination learning task modelled after Wisconsin Card Sorting Test. To test the susceptibility to learned irrelevance, participants were …
