Vasculogenesis And Angiogenesis In Vegf Receptor-1 Deficient Mice, Vivienne C. Ho, Guo-Hua Fong
UCHC Articles - Research
Vascular endothelial growth factor receptor-1 (VEGFR-1)/Flt-1 is a transmembrane tyrosine kinase receptor for VEGF-A, VEGF-B, and placental growth factor (PlGF). VEGFR-1 is an enigmatic molecule whose precise role in postnatal angiogenesis remains controversial. Although many postnatal and adult studies have been performed by manipulating VEGFR-1 ligands, including competitive binding by truncated VEGFR-1 protein, neutralization by antibodies, or specific ligand overexpression or knockout, much less is known at the level of the receptor per se, especially in vivo. Perplexingly, while VEGFR-1 negatively regulates endothelial cell differentiation during development, it has been implied in promoting angiogenesis under certain conditions in adult tissues, …
Why Is Co-Infection With Influenza Virus And Bacteria So Difficult To Control?, Linda S. Cauley, Anthony T. Vella
Why Is Co-Infection With Influenza Virus And Bacteria So Difficult To Control?, Linda S. Cauley, Anthony T. Vella
UCHC Articles - Research
Influenza viruses are genetically labile pathogens which avoid immune detection by constantly changing their coat proteins. Most human infections are caused by mildly pathogenic viruses which rarely cause life-threatening disease in healthy people, but some individuals with a weakened immune system can experience severe complications. Widespread infections with highly pathogenic strains of influenza virus are less common, but have the potential to cause enormous death tolls among healthy adults if infection rates reach pandemic proportions. Increased virulence has been attributed to a variety of factors, including enhanced susceptibility to co-infection with common strains of bacteria. The mechanisms that facilitate dual …
Interpersonal Guilt And Substance Use In College Students, Nancy M. Petry
Interpersonal Guilt And Substance Use In College Students, Nancy M. Petry
UCHC Articles - Research
The college years are a time for developing independence and separating from one’s family, and it is also a time in which substance use often escalates. This study examined the relationships between use of substances and interpersonal guilt, an emotion that can arise from feelings about separation, among 1,979 college students. Regular users of alcohol, cigarettes, cannabis, and other illicit drugs were compared with non-regular users of each substance. Sequential linear regression, controlling for confounding variables, examined relationships between regular use of each substance and scores on a guilt index. Risky drinkers and daily smokers had significantly more interpersonal guilt …

A central question in neuronal network analysis is how the interaction between individual neurons produces behavior and behavioral modifications. This task depends critically on how exactly signals are integrated by individual nerve cells functioning as complex operational units. Regional electrical properties of branching neuronal processes which determine the input-output function of any neuron are extraordinarily complex, dynamic, and, in the general case, impossible to predict in the absence of detailed measurements. To obtain such a measurement one would, ideally, like to be able to monitor, at multiple sites, subthreshold events as they travel from the sites of origin (synaptic contacts …
Behind The Scenes Of The Nas: Human Factors Taxonomy For Investigating Service Integrity Events, Katherine A. Berry, Michael W. Sawyer, Jordan Hinson
Behind The Scenes Of The Nas: Human Factors Taxonomy For Investigating Service Integrity Events, Katherine A. Berry, Michael W. Sawyer, Jordan Hinson
International Symposium on Aviation Psychology - 2015
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) deployed the Service Integrity Risk Analysis Process (SI-RAP) with the goal of assessing the risk of technical occurrence events where the ability to provide safe air traffic management technical services is compromised. As a post-event tool, SI-RAP assesses the risk associated with an occurrence based on severity and repeatability. The SI-RAP taxonomy was developed to provide a consistent framework for supporting the assessment of event repeatability. The SI-RAP taxonomy synthesizes existing human factors taxonomies with customized factors representing the technical operations domain. The SI-RAP taxonomy is comprised of four tiers: Personnel Factors, Contextual Factors, Equipment …

Techniques For The Human Centered Evaluation Of Designs For The Future Aviation System, Philip J. Smith, Kathy Abbott, Lawrence J. Prinzel, Amy Pritchett, Tanya Yuditsky
International Symposium on Aviation Psychology - 2015
In order to evaluate new operational concepts, system designs, procedures and technologies for the future aviation system, we need to develop and validate a range of techniques to ensure the safe and effective performance of human-machine systems. This becomes increasingly important as such systems incorporate increasing levels of automation and autonomy for technologies, and as they attempt to integrate increasingly complex subsystems. It is challenging to evaluate the individual components of such systems relative to meeting their design requirements. It is orders of magnitude more challenging to evaluate performance when they are embedded in the larger system context. While there …

Pupillary Response As An Indicator Of Processing Demands Within A Supervisory Control Simulation Environment, Ciara Sibley, Joseph Coyne, Akshith Doddi, Phillip Jasper
International Symposium on Aviation Psychology - 2015
Current Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) operator task demands are highly variable and unbalanced across team members, resulting in sub-optimal operator utilization which leads to mishaps. This has driven the Department of Defense’s desire for more flexible team structures and task allocation tools. Unobtrusive and continuous measures of operator state are needed to effectively allocate tasking to operators and prevent errors. Twenty participants completed two twenty minute supervisory control sessions where task load was manipulated by varying event frequency (e.g., information requests) and eye tracking data was collected. Pupillometry data revealed increased mean and maximum pupil sizes with increased task load …

We investigated the role of autophagy in HIV-infected subjects with neurocognitive impairment (NCI) ± HIV encephalitis (HIVE), many of which had a history of polysubstance abuse/dependence, using post-mortem brain tissues to determine whether differences in autophagy related factors may be more associated with NCI or NCI-encephalitis. Using qRT-PCR, we detected significant differences in gene expression levels with SQSTM1, LAMP1 higher in HIV-infected subjects without NCI while ATG5, SQSTM1 were then lower in HIV infection/NCI and ATG7, SQSTM1 being higher in NCI-HIVE. Immunohistochemical labeling of these autophagy associated proteins (also including Beclin 1 and LC3B) in Iba1-positive microglial cells showed generally …

Assessing The Cultural In Culturally Sensitive Printed Patient-Education Materials For Chinese Americans With Type 2 Diabetes, Evelyn Y. Ho, H Tran, Catherine A. Chesla
Communication Studies
Type 2 diabetes affects Chinese Americans at an alarming rate. To address this health disparity, research in the area of cultural sensitivity and health literacy provide useful guidelines for creating culturally appropriate health education. In this article, we use discourse analysis to examine a group of locally-available, Chinese and English language diabetes print documents from a surface and deep structure level of culture. First, we compared these documents to research findings about printed health information to determine if and how these documents apply current best practices for health literacy and culturally appropriate health communication. Second, we examined how diabetes as …

Mobile Nurse Practitioner: A Pilot Program To Address Service Gaps Experienced By Homeless Individuals, Joan Alviar Fraino
Nursing and Health Professions Student Research and Publications
An estimated 2.3 to 3.5 million individuals are homeless in the United States, many of whom have chronic medical and mental illnesses. Underserved individuals who are homeless experience gaps in services, resulting in poor health care outcomes and readmission to the hospital setting, often presenting in crisis through the emergency department. The financial state of hospitals is negatively impacted by the burden of patients returning to the hospital due to unresolved issues. The current article presents the role of a psychiatric-mental health nurse practitioner as part of a pilot program, Opportunity Village Mobile Health, that provides a comprehensive approach to …

Mirro Center Articles
Community health centers (CHCs) play a pivotal role in healthcare delivery to vulnerable populations, but have not yet benefited from a data warehouse that can support improvements in clinical and financial outcomes across the practice. We have developed a multidimensional clinic data warehouse (CDW) by working with 7 CHCs across the state of Indiana and integrating their operational, financial and electronic patient records to support ongoing delivery of care. We describe in detail the rationale for the project, the data architecture employed, the content of the data warehouse, along with a description of the challenges experienced and strategies used in …

Male And Female Runners Demonstrate Different Sagittal Plane Mechanics As A Function Of Static Hamstring Flexibility, D. S. Blaise Williams Iii, Lee M. Welch
Physical Therapy Publications
Background:
Injuries to runners are common. However, there are many potential contributing factors to injury. While lack of flexibility alone is commonly related to injury, there are clear differences in hamstring flexibility between males and females.
Objective:
To compare the effect of static hamstring length on sagittal plane mechanics between male and female runners.
Method:
Forty subjects (30.0±6.4 years) participated and were placed in one of 4 groups: flexible males (n=10), inflexible males (n=10), flexible females (n=10), and inflexible females (n=10). All subjects were free of injury at the time of data collection. Three-dimensional kinematics and kinetics were collected while …

Anticancer Activity Of A Thymidine Quinoxaline Conjugate Is Modulated By Cytosolic Thymidine Pathways, Qiong Wei, Haijuan Liu, Honghao Zhou, Dejun Zhang, Zhiwei Zhang, Qibing Zhou
Medicinal Chemistry Publications
Background
High levels of thymidine kinase 1 (TK1) and thymidine phosphorylase (TYMP) are key molecular targets by thymidine therapeutics in cancer treatment. The dual roles of TYMP as a tumor growth factor and a key activation enzyme of anticancer metabolites resulted in a mixed outcome in cancer patients. In this study, we investigated the roles of TK1 and TYMP on a thymidine quinoxaline conjugate to evaluate an alternative to circumvent the contradictive role of TYMP.
Methods
TK1 and TYMP levels in multiple liver cell lines were assessed along with the cytotoxicity of the thymidine conjugate. Cellular accumulation of the thymidine …

6-Hydroxyflavone And Derivatives Exhibit Potent Anti-Inflammatory Activity Among Mono-, Di- And Polyhydroxylated Flavones In Kidney Mesangial Cells, Xing Wang, Zhiwei Wang, Preetpal Singh Sidhu, Umesh R. Desai, Qibing Zhou
Medicinal Chemistry Publications
Inflammatory responses by kidney mesangial cells play a critical role in the glomerulonephritis. The anti-inflammatory potential of nineteen mono-, di- and polyhydroxylated flavones including fisetin, quercetin, morin, tricetin, gossypetin, apigenin and myricetin were investigated on rat mesangial cells with lipopolysaccharide (LPS) as the inflammatory stimuli. 6-Hydroxyflavone and 4′,6-dihydroxyflavone exhibited high activity with IC50 in the range of 2.0 μM, a much better inhibition potential in comparison to the well-studied polyhydroxylated flavones. Interestingly, the anti-inflammatory activity was not due to direct quenching of NO radicals. Investigation on derivatives with methylation, acetylation or sulfation of 6-hydroxyl group revealed that 6-methoxyflavone was the …

Cocaine dependence is associated with increased impulsivity in humans. Both cocaine dependence and impulsive behavior are under the regulatory control of cortico-striatal networks. One behavioral laboratory measure of impulsivity is response inhibition (ability to withhold a prepotent response) in which altered patterns of regional brain activation during executive tasks in service of normal performance are frequently found in cocaine dependent (CD) subjects studied with functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). However, little is known about aberrations in specific directional neuronal connectivity in CD subjects. The present study employed fMRI-based dynamic causal modeling (DCM) to study the effective (directional) neuronal connectivity associated …

Biomarker Research and Personalized Medicine Publications
Methyl-binding domain (MBD) enrichment followed by deep sequencing (MBD-seq), is a robust and cost efficient approach for methylome-wide association studies (MWAS). MBD-seq has been demonstrated to be capable of identifying differentially methylated regions, detecting previously reported robust associations and producing findings that replicate with other technologies such as targeted pyrosequencing of bisulfite converted DNA. There are several kits commercially available that can be used for MBD enrichment. Our previous work has involved MethylMiner (Life Technologies, Foster City, CA, USA) that we chose after careful investigation of its properties. However, in a recent evaluation of five commercially available MBD-enrichment kits the …
