Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction With Bone-Patellar Tendon-Bone Autograft Versus Allograft In Young Patients, Alfred W. Atanda, Daniel F. O'Brien, Matthew J. Kraeutler, Russell R. Flato, Matthew R. Salminen, Kevin Henrichsen, Patrick Kane, Christopher Dodson, Steven B. Cohen, Michael G. Ciccotti

Rothman Institute Papers

Objectives: Traditionally, bone-patella tendon-bone (BTB) autograft has been the gold standard graft choice for younger, athletic patients requiring ACL reconstruction. However, donor site morbidity, post-operative patella fracture, and increased operative time have led many surgeons to choose BTB allograft for their reconstructions. Opponents of allografts feel that slower healing time, higher rate of graft failure, and potential for disease transmission makes them undesirable graft choices in athletic patients. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the clinical outcomes, both subjective and objective, of young patients that who have undergone either BTB autograft or allograft reconstructions with a minimum of …

The use of odor baits for surveillance and control of malaria mosquitoes requires robust dispensing tools. In this study, the residual activity of a synthetic mosquito attractant blend dispensed from nylon or low density polyethylene (LDPE) sachets was evaluated at weekly intervals for one year without re-impregnation. The potential role of bacteria in modulating the attraction of mosquitoes to odor-treated nylon that had been used repeatedly over the one year study period, without re-impregnation, was also investigated. Significantly higher proportions of female Anopheles gambiae sensu stricto mosquitoes were consistently attracted to treated nylon strips than the other treatments, up to …

My Path From Farquhar College Of Arts And Science To The Field Of Medicine, Crystal Romero

Pre-Health Day

As an undergraduate student in the Farquhar College of Arts and Sciences I was confident that I wanted to be a physician; however, I was also intrigued by the field of Public Health. Consequently, I pursued a Master’s degree concentrating in Epidemiology and Biostatistics. Personally, I saw the attainment of this degree as a means of developing a skill set for future practice as a physician. Public health concentrates on community health needs, while medicine focuses more on the needs of an individual patient. During this time I worked on a project at the Broward County Health Department that allowed …

Freshman At Farquhar To Pharmacy Fellow: The Reality Of The Journey And Tips For Success, Nicholas Carris

Pre-Health Day

The path to becoming a healthcare provider is a commitment to lifelong learning, constant hard work, and a career that is not about you. Every class you take, everything you learn, every experience you engage in is preparing you to be a competent and compassionate healthcare provider, so that one day you can walk into the room of a desperate human being and help them. The pay is average at best especially considering the years of training. People will be angry at you when you are doing your best to help them. People will be angry when you do not …

From Nsu-Fcas To Nsu-Com: A Dual Admission Student’S Journey, Hannah Bromberg

Pre-Health Day

As I reflect upon my time at NSU, I feel privileged to share my own story and advice. Eight years ago, I embarked upon the journey to become an osteopathic physician. Aspiring to become a doctor since I was a child, I was fortunate enough to be accepted into NSU’s dual admission program and graduated from FCAS in 2011. While interviewing for medical school, I would often be asked to expound upon my research and extracurricular activities. This often took me by surprise because I naturally assumed that the interview would be strictly academics when in fact, it was quite …

Pursuing advanced education leading to a professional degree of any kind is a long and challenging endeavor, yielding great reward and fulfillment. As a dentist and current orthodontic resident, I have experienced this firsthand. I am a proud alumnus of the Farquhar College of Arts and Sciences, where I received my undergraduate degree in biology. It was here that I was given the opportunity and provided with the essential tools to succeed at the next level. This …

Using Yoga Practice To Empower Psychotherapists’ Interpersonal Process, Jennifer Paz Mar 2015

Using Yoga Practice To Empower Psychotherapists’ Interpersonal Process, Jennifer Paz

Graduate School of Professional Psychology: Doctoral Papers and Masters Projects

Yoga practice promotes awareness and acceptance, and serves as a body-centered medium for developing deepened self-understanding. Among patient populations, a growing body of evidence suggests that the benefits of yoga practice extend to both physical health and psychological well-being. However, the psychological impact of yoga practice on psychotherapists’ interpersonal responses, while potentially promising, has received little attention in the literature. This paper provides a historical overview of contemplative practices and discusses the role that yoga can play in developing certain interpersonal characteristics of the psychotherapist that are hypothesized to empower the therapeutic relationship and facilitate constructive behavior change on the …

Measurement Techniques For Steady Shear Viscosity Of Mozzarella-Type Cheeses At High Shear Rates And High Temperature, Prateek Sharma, Tzvetelin T. Dessev, Peter A. Munro, Peter G. Wiles, Graeme Gillies, Matt Golding, Bryony James, Patrick Janssen Mar 2015

Measurement Techniques For Steady Shear Viscosity Of Mozzarella-Type Cheeses At High Shear Rates And High Temperature, Prateek Sharma, Tzvetelin T. Dessev, Peter A. Munro, Peter G. Wiles, Graeme Gillies, Matt Golding, Bryony James, Patrick Janssen

Nutrition, Dietetics, and Food Sciences Faculty Publications

While measuring steady shear viscosity of Mozzarella-type cheeses in a rotational rheometer at 70 °C, three main difficulties were encountered; wall slip, structural failure during measurement and viscoelastic time dependent effects. Serrated plates were the most successful surface modification at eliminating wall slip. However, even with serrated plates shear banding occurred at higher shear rates. Because of the viscoelastic nature of the cheeses, a time dependent viscous response occurred at shear rates <1 >s−1, requiring longer times to attain steady shear conditions. Prolonged continuous shearing altered the structure of the molten cheeses. The effects of structural change were greatly reduced by …

Melding Data Collection Methodology With Community Assistance: Benefits To Both Researchers And The Indigenous Groups They Study, Douglas S. London Mar 2015

Melding Data Collection Methodology With Community Assistance: Benefits To Both Researchers And The Indigenous Groups They Study, Douglas S. London

Journal of Ecological Anthropology

I present a description of a model of melding data collection with community aid in the form of health educator training that emerged in the process of research collaboration during 2009-2011 with the Kawymeno Waorani foragers of Amazonian Ecuador. Some guidelines are suggested as to how benefits to both parties might be achieved when collecting data with indigenous populations. In this article I describe some of the advantages and pitfalls of melding data collection and community aid with research when collaborating with vulnerable indigenous groups.

The Dissociative Subtype Of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder: Unique Resting-State Functional Connectivity Of Basolateral And Centromedial Amygdala Complexes., Andrew A Nicholson, Maria Densmore, Paul A Frewen, Jean Théberge, Richard W J Neufeld, Margaret C Mckinnon, Ruth A Lanius

Medical Biophysics Publications

Previous studies point towards differential connectivity patterns among basolateral (BLA) and centromedial (CMA) amygdala regions in patients with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) as compared to controls. Here, we describe the first study to compare directly connectivity patterns of the BLA and CMA complexes between PTSD patients with and without the dissociative subtype (PTSD+DS and PTSD-DS, respectively). Amygdala connectivity to regulatory prefrontal regions and parietal regions involved in consciousness and proprioception were expected to differ between these two groups based on differential limbic regulation and behavioural symptoms. PTSD patients (n=49), with (n=13) and without (n=36) the dissociative subtype, and age-matched healthy …

Discerning Applicants' Interests In Rural Medicine: A Textual Analysis Of Admission Essays, Carol L. Elam, Anthony D. Weaver, Elmer T. Whittler, Terry D. Stratton, Linda M. Asher, Kimberly L. Scott, Emery A. Wilson

Medical Student Education Faculty Publications

BACKGROUND: Despite efforts to construct targeted medical school admission processes using applicant-level correlates of future practice location, accurately gauging applicants' interests in rural medicine remains an imperfect science. This study explores the usefulness of textual analysis to identify rural-oriented themes and values underlying applicants' open-ended responses to admission essays.

METHODS: The study population consisted of 75 applicants to the Rural Physician Leadership Program (RPLP) at the University of Kentucky College of Medicine. Using WordStat, a proprietary text analysis program, applicants' American Medical College Application Service personal statement and an admission essay written at the time of interview were searched for …
