A Non-Invasive Method To Evaluate Gastrointestinal Transit Behaviour In Rat, Geoffrey M. Bove Apr 2015

A Non-Invasive Method To Evaluate Gastrointestinal Transit Behaviour In Rat, Geoffrey M. Bove

Biomedical Sciences Faculty Publications

Introduction: Many factors alter gastrointestinal transit. Animal models are useful for preclinical studies of gastrointestinal transit, but terminal methods do not allow later study, and stressful assessment methods will likely alter the transit of the animal. To overcome these factors, we developed a new method to assay rat total gastrointestinal transit.

Methods: Standard plastic cages with their bottoms cut off were placed on wire mesh floors. Custom apparatuses were built to contain fecal pellets as they fell through the floors. Webcams connected to a computer running a security program were placed to image the pellets at regular intervals. Custom food …

Improving Patient Satisfaction After Primary Total Knee Arthroplasty Using Nurse Practitioner-Driven Preoperative Education, Jennifer A. White Apr 2015

Improving Patient Satisfaction After Primary Total Knee Arthroplasty Using Nurse Practitioner-Driven Preoperative Education, Jennifer A. White

Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Projects

Total joint arthroplasty is an undisputed option for relieving pain and improving the function of an arthritic joint. The number of patients undergoing total knee arthroplasty (TKA) annually is expected to increase by 600% in the next two decades (Lau, Gandhi, Mahomed, & Mahomed, 2012).

Current research shows that while 81-89% of patients who have had a TKA are satisfied postoperatively, there is room to improve patient satisfaction by providing further education preoperatively. While research cannot agree on a single, specific variable that influences patient dissatisfaction, a review of the literature shows that patients repeatedly note their “unmet expectations” as …

Lgbt Advocacy: One Leader's Journey Through Fear To Transcendence, Paula Suffrins Apr 2015

Lgbt Advocacy: One Leader's Journey Through Fear To Transcendence, Paula Suffrins

Theses and Graduate Projects

The LGBT population experiences healthcare disparities at higher rates than their heterosexual counterparts. Fear among this population prevents them from seeking health care. Nurses can be influential in addressing this fear and decreasing healthcare disparities within the LGBT population. However, LGBT content offered in nursing programs is not adequately preparing students to care for this specific population in a culturally sensitive manner. Healthcare organizations lack LGBT content in orientation programs as well. Transformational nursing leaders can initiate and support the effort to create a safe and welcoming environment for the LGBT population where healthcare can be delivered by culturally sensitive …

Closed Head Injury In An Age-Related Alzheimer Mouse Model Leads To An Altered Neuroinflammatory Response And Persistent Cognitive Impairment, Scott J. Webster, Linda J. Van Eldik, D. Martin Watterson, Adam D. Bachstetter

Sanders-Brown Center on Aging Faculty Publications

Epidemiological studies have associated increased risk of Alzheimer's disease (AD)-related clinical symptoms with a medical history of head injury. Currently, little is known about pathophysiology mechanisms linked to this association. Persistent neuroinflammation is one outcome observed in patients after a single head injury. Neuroinflammation is also present early in relevant brain regions during AD pathology progression. In addition, previous mechanistic studies in animal models link neuroinflammation as a contributor to neuropathology and cognitive impairment in traumatic brain injury (TBI) or AD-related models. Therefore, we explored the potential interplay of neuroinflammatory responses in TBI and AD by analysis of the temporal …

Synthesis Of Β-Triphosphotriester Pronucleotides, Yousef A. Beni, Chandravanu Dash, Keykavous Parang

Pharmacy Faculty Articles and Research

Dinucleoside phosphorochloridite were synthesized from phosphorus trichloride and three nucleoside analogues, 3-fluoro-2,3-dideoxythymidine (FLT), 2',3'-dideoxy-5-fluoro-3'- thiacytidine (FTC), and 2',3'-dideoxy-3'-thiacytidine (3TC), in a multistep synthesis. Polymerbound N-Boc p-acetoxybenzyl 5¢-O-2¢-deoxythymidine was reacted with dinucleoside phosphorochloridite in the presence of 2,6-lutidine, followed by the reaction with dodecyl alcohol and 5-(ethylthio)-1H-tetrazole, oxidation with tert-butyl hydroperoxide, and acidic cleavage, respectively, to afford the b-triphosphotriester derivatives containing three different nucleosides.

Conversational Scaffolding With Couples With An Aphasic Partner, Mary Jo Bissmeyer Apr 2015

Conversational Scaffolding With Couples With An Aphasic Partner, Mary Jo Bissmeyer

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection

Aphasia is an acquired language disorder experienced by approximately one million Americans today, many recovering from stroke or traumatic brain injury. Traditional therapy has focused solely on regaining specific linguistic skills, including auditory comprehension, speech, reading, and/or writing. Conversation partner training is a newer trend in aphasia intervention that has emerged thanks to an increasingly social model of disability and the pressure to deliver meaningful and cost effective health services. It fits nicely with the Life Participation Approach to Aphasia, which encourages clinicians to help individuals with aphasia and their families set and meet their own goals for therapy, which …

Evaluating The Non-Evidence Based Practice Of Rounding Serum Creatinine In The Elderly And The Impact On Medication Dosing, Kelly Lynn Roden Apr 2015

Evaluating The Non-Evidence Based Practice Of Rounding Serum Creatinine In The Elderly And The Impact On Medication Dosing, Kelly Lynn Roden

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection

Background: The Cockcroft and Gault equation is widely accepted in practice as the most appropriate way to calculate an estimated creatinine clearance. Geriatric patients often present with reduced muscle mass, and therefore lower creatinine production, due to normal changes in body composition associated with aging. Because serum creatinine and creatinine clearance are inversely proportional using the Cockcroft and Gault equation, a lower serum creatinine may falsely overestimate renal function in the elderly population. Rounding to a normal serum creatinine is believed by some practitioners to prevent over estimation of creatinine clearance and renal function.

Objective: The objective of this study …

Role Of Il-16 In Cd4(+) T Cell-Mediated Regulation Of Relapsing Multiple Sclerosis, Dusanka S. Skundric, William W. Cruikshank, Jelena Drulovic

Neurology Faculty Publications

In an important article published in Nature Medicine, Liu and colleagues described a novel CD4+ FoxA1+ regulatory T (Treg) cell population as distinct regulators of relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (RRMS) and experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE). CD4+ FoxA1+ Treg cells appear as key regulators of responsiveness to therapy with interferon beta (IFN-β) in RRMS patients. Data indicate that CD4+ FoxA1+ FOXP3− Treg cells develop within the central nervous system (CNS), and a potential of cerebellar granule neurons (CGN) in generation of CD4+ FoxA1+ PD-L1hiFOXP3− Treg cells from encephalitogenic CD4+ …

Molecular Dyes Used For Surgical Specimen Margin Orientation Allow For Intraoperative Optical Assessment During Breast Conserving Surgery, David M. Mcclatchy, Venkataramanan Krishnaswamy, Stephen C. Kanick, Jonathan T. Elliott, Wendy A. Wells, Richard J. Barth Jr., Keith D. Paulsen, Brian W. Pogue

Dartmouth Scholarship

A variety of optical techniques utilizing near-infrared (NIR) light are being proposed for intraoperative breast tumor margin assessment. However, immediately following a lumpectomy excision, the margins are inked, which preserves the orientation of the specimen but prevents optical interrogation of the tissue margins. Here, a workflow is proposed that allows for both NIR optical assessment following full specimen marking using molecular dyes which have negligible absorption and scattering in the NIR. The effect of standard surgical inks in contrast to molecular dyes for an NIR signal is shown. Further, the proposed workflow is demonstrated with full specimen intraoperative imaging on …

Exercise Ameliorates High Fat Diet Induced Cardiac Dysfunction By Increasing Interleukin 10., Varun Kesherwani, Vishalakshi Chavali, Bryan T. Hackfort, Suresh C. Tyagi, Paras K. Mishra

Journal Articles: Cellular & Integrative Physiology

Increasing evidence suggests that a sedentary lifestyle and a high fat diet (HFD) leads to cardiomyopathy. Moderate exercise ameliorates cardiac dysfunction, however underlying molecular mechanisms are poorly understood. Increased inflammation due to induction of pro-inflammatory cytokine such as tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) and attenuation of anti-inflammatory cytokine such as interleukin 10 (IL-10) contributes to cardiac dysfunction in obese and diabetics. We hypothesized that exercise training ameliorates HFD- induced cardiac dysfunction by mitigating obesity and inflammation through upregulation of IL-10 and downregulation of TNF-α. To test this hypothesis, 8 week old, female C57BL/6J mice were fed with HFD and exercised (swimming …

The Effect Of Education On Compassion Fatigue As Experienced By Staff Nurses, Kathryn L. Zehr Apr 2015

The Effect Of Education On Compassion Fatigue As Experienced By Staff Nurses, Kathryn L. Zehr

Evidence-Based Practice Project Reports

Historically, nursing has been perceived as a highly rewarding profession. Yet, due to the increasing complexity of today’s healthcare, nurses are faced with greater challenges in their work environments. Registered nurses who work in tertiary care settings are exposed to disturbing patient situations including trauma, death, abuse, or chronic disease. Joinson (1992) described this experience as compassion fatigue and symptoms include headaches, short attention span, or fatigue. A review of literature has identified that nurses should be educated about risk factors and coping strategies to combat compassion fatigue. Guided by the Model for Evidence-Based Practice Change and Jean Watson’s Theory …

Doctoral External Publications

One-fourth of individuals diagnosed with the human immunodeficiency virus concomitantly have the hepatitis C virus infection. Since the discovery of highly active antiretroviral therapy, liver complications have become the leading cause of morbidity and mortality in HIV-HCV coinfected individuals. Optimal treatment in this patient population is critical, as coinfection has been linked to deterioration of both disease states. The objective of this review article is to highlight the current literature on drug-drug interactions between HIV and HCV treatments. The management of the treatment of coinfection patients has been covered extensively in numerous other publications.
