Electronic Cigarettes: A New Generation Of Smoking, Claire M. Warren Apr 2015

Electronic Cigarettes: A New Generation Of Smoking, Claire M. Warren

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

Electronic cigarette smoking is a trend that has become very popular in the United States in recent years. As e-cigarettes continue to gain popularity, it is important for dental professionals to be up-to-date on the dangers that they pose.

An interview session consisting of a questionnaire was the methodology used in this study. Ten dental hygienists who work full or part-time in private practice settings were interviewed. After the interview questions were asked, the researcher discussed the effects of electronic cigarettes can have on oral and overall health. Last, the data were analyzed to determine if dental hygienists included electronic …

Access To Healthcare: Understanding Disparities Among Lgbt & Black Communities, Taylor Jones

Honors Theses

This paper aims to explain and improve the disparities that intersect the Black and LGBT communities of Berrien County as it relates to access to healthcare, specifically those at risk for HIV. This paper identifies the various resources used to highlight these including the Kalamazoo Community AIDS Resource Education Services (CARES). There are many factors that put these populations at risk. The LGBT and Black communities are at risk due to factors such as STIs, multiple sex partners, unprotected sex, use of drugs during sex, low socioeconomic status, inadequate data on race, ethnicity, and language lowers the likelihood of effective …

A Post Discharge Support Program For Patients Experiencing Psychological Non-Epileptic Seizures: A Pilot Project, Lahoma Prather Apr 2015

A Post Discharge Support Program For Patients Experiencing Psychological Non-Epileptic Seizures: A Pilot Project, Lahoma Prather

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Capstones

Abstract

Rationale: There are no accepted standards of care for patients with psychological non-epileptic seizure (PNES) disorder. However the literature regarding PNES identified three common themes including acceptance of the diagnosis; consistent support and follow up; and development of appropriate outcome indicators. This pilot project was designed to address these themes rather than focus on a specific treatment modality.

Methods: The pilot project was initiated at the University of Louisville Comprehensive Epilepsy Center (CEC) to evaluate the feasibility of a post-discharge support program for the PNES population. Outcomes identified for measurement included seizure frequency, health care utilization, anti-epileptic medication use …

Shugoshin-1 Balances Aurora B Kinase Activity Via Pp2a To Promote Chromosome Bi-Orientation, Amanda Meppelink, Lilian Kabeche, Martijn J.M. Vromans, Duane A. Compton, Susanne M.A. Lens Apr 2015

Shugoshin-1 Balances Aurora B Kinase Activity Via Pp2a To Promote Chromosome Bi-Orientation, Amanda Meppelink, Lilian Kabeche, Martijn J.M. Vromans, Duane A. Compton, Susanne M.A. Lens

Dartmouth Scholarship

Correction of faulty kinetochore-microtubule attachments is essential for faithful chromosome segregation and dictated by the opposing activities of Aurora B kinase and PP1 and PP2A phosphatases. How kinase and phosphatase activities are appropriately balanced is less clear. Here, we show that a centromeric pool of PP2A-B56 counteracts Aurora B T-loop phosphorylation and is recruited to centromeres through Shugoshin-1 (Sgo1). In non-transformed RPE-1 cells, Aurora B, Sgo1, and PP2A-B56 are enriched on centromeres and levels diminish as chromosomes establish bi-oriented attachments. Elevating Sgo1 levels at centromeres recruits excess PP2A-B56, and this counteracts Aurora B kinase activity, undermining efficient correction of kinetochore-microtubule …

Evidence Consistent With The Multiple-Bearings Hypothesis From Human Virtual Landmark-Based Navigation, Martha R. Forloines, Kent D. Bodily, Bradley R. Sturz Apr 2015

Evidence Consistent With The Multiple-Bearings Hypothesis From Human Virtual Landmark-Based Navigation, Martha R. Forloines, Kent D. Bodily, Bradley R. Sturz

Psychology: Faculty Publications

One approach to explaining the conditions under which additional landmarks will be learned or ignored relates to the nature of the information provided by the landmarks (i.e., distance versus bearings). In the current experiment, we tested the ability of such an approach to explain the search behavior of human participants in a virtual landmark-based navigation task by manipulating whether landmarks provided stable distance, stable direction, or both stable distance and stable direction information. First, we incrementally shaped human participants’ search behavior in the presence of two ambiguous landmarks. Next, participants experienced one additional landmark that disambiguated the location of the …

Estrogen, Bisphenol A, And Bisphenol S: Regulation Of Cathepsin L Activity And Its Relation To Systemic Lupus Erythematosis, Regina M. Powers Apr 2015

Estrogen, Bisphenol A, And Bisphenol S: Regulation Of Cathepsin L Activity And Its Relation To Systemic Lupus Erythematosis, Regina M. Powers

Biology Honors Papers

Systemic Lupus Erythematosis (SLE) is an autoimmune disease that causes the immune system to self-destruct. SLE is nine times more frequent in women than in men, and it has been shown that there is a correlation between high estrogen levels and an increased severity of the disease. This raises a concern about environmental estrogens, including Bisphenol A (BPA) which is found in many plastic products in the United States. BPA can be absorbed by the foods and liquids that are held in the plastic containers and then can enter into the human body. Because of its structural similarity to estrogen, …

Molecular Dynamics Simulations Of Kirbac1.1 Mutants Reveal Global Gating Changes Of Kir Channels, Tobias Linder, Shizhen Wang, Eva-Maria Zangerl-Plessl, Colin G Nichols, Anna Stary-Weinzinger Apr 2015

Molecular Dynamics Simulations Of Kirbac1.1 Mutants Reveal Global Gating Changes Of Kir Channels, Tobias Linder, Shizhen Wang, Eva-Maria Zangerl-Plessl, Colin G Nichols, Anna Stary-Weinzinger

2010-2019 OA Pubs

Prokaryotic inwardly rectifying (KirBac) potassium channels are homologous to mammalian Kir channels. Their activity is controlled by dynamical conformational changes that regulate ion flow through a central pore. Understanding the dynamical rearrangements of Kir channels during gating requires high-resolution structure information from channels crystallized in different conformations and insight into the transition steps, which are difficult to access experimentally. In this study, we use MD simulations on wild type KirBac1.1 and an activatory mutant to investigate activation gating of KirBac channels. Full atomistic MD simulations revealed that introducing glutamate in position 143 causes significant widening at the helix bundle crossing …

Comparison of Body Composition Assessment Techniques in Older Adult Females

Introduction: As the aging population increases, the need for accurate assessment of chronic disease risk also increases. There is considerable debate over the best way to assess this risk. BMI is a weight-to-height ratio that is commonly used to assess adiposity and obesity related risk. However, it does not differentiate lean (i.e., muscle and bone) versus fat mass – the true predictors of obesity-related diseases (e.g., cardiovascular disease and diabetes). This is prevalent in post-menopausal women who often experience age-related gains in fat mass and losses in lean mass.

The Regulation Of Cathepsin L Activity By Estrogen And Bisphenols A & S: Relationship To Systemic Lupus Erythematosus, Dylan T. Cuva

Biology Honors Papers

Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) is an autoimmune disease that is linked to increased levels of estrogen. Bisphenol A (BPA) is an environmental estrogen that may also play a role in SLE. BPA is used in the production of polycarbonate plastics and epoxy resins, including use in the creation of cans and plastic bottles. This study investigated the role of BPA and other bisphenols on enzyme activity in a murine model for SLE.

A Call For Hearing Loss Prevention Programs In College Music Education Programs, Jason Taurins Apr 2015

A Call For Hearing Loss Prevention Programs In College Music Education Programs, Jason Taurins

Honors Theses

Music educators, ensemble conductors, and students who participate in musical ensembles are exposed to sound pressure levels which exceed the criteria for NIOSH. As such, this population should be enrolled in hearing loss prevention programs. Ensemble directors (many music educators fall into this category) have a direct role in influencing the sound pressure levels produced in rehearsals. Music educators have a role in influencing the knowledge, skills, attitudes, and behaviors of their students. Because of the health risks of noise exposure, and the role music educators (and ensemble directors in general) have in influencing their students, hearing loss prevention should …

Site-Specific Immunomodulator: A Novel Treatment For Crohn's Disease, Brian Bressler, Kevin P. Bethel, Ralf Kleef, Sophie L. Reynolds, Simon Sutcliffe, David W. Mullins, Hal Gunn

Dartmouth Scholarship

We investigated the mechanism of action, safety, and efficacy of the Site-Specific Immunomodulator (SSI) QBECO, a novel immunotherapy for Crohn’s disease (CD). Using human monocytic THP-1 cells, we demonstrate that SSI QBECO (derived from the common colon bacteria E. coli) activates macrophages to an M1 phenotype (associated with enhanced capacity to eliminate bacteria and activate innate immune responses). We assessed SSI QBECO in a compassionate use protocol of ten adult patients with active CD. Patients with moderate to severe clinical symptoms receiving conventional CD treatments and/or complementary therapies were included, except patients receiving anti-TNF medications. SSI QBECO was self-administered subcutaneously …

Coculture Of Staphylococcus Aureus With Pseudomonas Aeruginosa Drives S. Aureus Towards Fermentative Metabolism And Reduced Viability In A Cystic Fibrosis Model, Laura M. Filkins, Jyoti A. Graber, Daniel G. Olson, Emily L. Dolben, Lee Lynd, Sabin Bhuju, George A. O'Toole Apr 2015

Coculture Of Staphylococcus Aureus With Pseudomonas Aeruginosa Drives S. Aureus Towards Fermentative Metabolism And Reduced Viability In A Cystic Fibrosis Model, Laura M. Filkins, Jyoti A. Graber, Daniel G. Olson, Emily L. Dolben, Lee Lynd, Sabin Bhuju, George A. O'Toole

Dartmouth Scholarship

The airways of patients with cystic fibrosis are colonized with diverse bacterial communities that change dynamically during pediatric years and early adulthood. Staphylococcus aureus is the most prevalent pathogen during early childhood, but during late teens and early adulthood, a shift in microbial composition occurs leading to Pseudomonas aeruginosa community predominance in ∼50% of adults. We developed a robust dual-bacterial in vitro coculture system of P. aeruginosa and S. aureus on monolayers of human bronchial epithelial cells homozygous for the ΔF508 cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) mutation to better model the mechanisms of this interaction. We show that P. …

Comparing Antibiotic Self-Medication In Two Socio-Economic Groups In Guatemala City: A Descriptive Cross-Sectional Study, Brooke M. Ramay, Paola Lambour, Alejandro Cerón

Anthropology: Faculty Scholarship

Background

Self-medication with antibiotics may result in antimicrobial resistance and its high prevalence is of particular concern in Low to Middle Income Countries (LMIC) like Guatemala. A better understanding of self-medication with antibiotics may represent an opportunity to develop interventions guiding the rational use of antibiotics. We aimed to compare the magnitude of antibiotic self-medication and the characteristics of those who self-medicate in two pharmacies serving disparate socio-economic communities in Guatemala City.

Methods

We conducted a descriptive, cross-sectional study in one Suburban pharmacy and one City Center pharmacy in Guatemala City. We used a questionnaire to gather information about frequency …
