The Pupillometer In Practice: Identifying And Overcoming Barriers, Audrey Lee Paulson May 2015

The Pupillometer In Practice: Identifying And Overcoming Barriers, Audrey Lee Paulson

Doctoral Projects

Problem: The pupillometer is an assessment tool that provides an accurate assessment of pupil reactivity. It is appropriate for patients who are neurologically impaired due to injury or illness. This tool, available and in use at a local community hospital, has minimal perceived importance in the Neuroscience Intensive Care Unit (NSICU), due to a disconnect experienced by the staff. The hypothesis was that understanding the pupillometer information was insufficient and that improving the knowledge would increase the perception of usefulness. Method: Conduct a survey to determine the cause of the lack of interest and use of the pupillometer. Once the …

Student-Athletes’ Attitudes And Beliefs Towards Social Media, Emily Boissonneault May 2015

Student-Athletes’ Attitudes And Beliefs Towards Social Media, Emily Boissonneault

Graduate Theses

The purpose of this study was to identify the attitudes and beliefs of student athletes towards social media. To address this question, student athletes completed a survey focused specifically on: the image they present on social media profiles, content included, and their thoughts on the social media education provided by their athletic department. Student athlete (SA) responses were also compared to non-athletes (NA) for a better understanding of social media profiles. Frequencies showed strong similarities in a number of content shared or not shared, like humorous photos (SA 74.1% and NA 73.3%) and sexy photos (SA 82.4% and NA 82.6%). …

Three different types of educational materials were used to educate the athlete. The athlete completed a pretest, completed an educational module, and then completed a posttest. Two weeks later the athlete completed a retention test. A total of 51 subjects participated in the study. The subjects were evaluated on a pretest, posttest, and retention test. Data were analyzed based on an independent t-test to compare pretest scores between athletes who have been previously concussed …

A Correlation Of Strength, Range Of Motion, And Shoulder Pathology In The Dominant Arm Of Division I Athletes, Laura Carrell May 2015

A Correlation Of Strength, Range Of Motion, And Shoulder Pathology In The Dominant Arm Of Division I Athletes, Laura Carrell

Graduate Theses

Division I overhead athletes put themselves at risk for injury due to factors such as fatigue, instability, range of motion difficulties, and strengthening deficits and hypertrophies throughout their careers. Injuries that occur at the collegiate level can have a permanent effect on an athlete’s way of life. Because the shoulder is one of the most commonly affected by overuse in collegiate sports, the purpose of this study was to determine if strength and range of motion correlated with injury. Determining whether or not there are correlations to injury, strengthening and stretching programs could be valuable preventative treatments to implement on …

Microhabitat Use Affects Brain Size And Structure In Intertidal Gobies, Gemma E. White, Culum Brown May 2015

Microhabitat Use Affects Brain Size And Structure In Intertidal Gobies, Gemma E. White, Culum Brown

Veterinary Science and Medicine Collection

The ecological cognition hypothesis poses that the brains and behaviours of individuals are largely shaped by the environments in which they live and the associated challenges they must overcome during their lives. Here we examine the effect of environmental complexity on relative brain size in 4 species of intertidal gobies from differing habitats. Two species were rock pool specialists that lived on spatially complex rocky shores, while the remainder lived on dynamic, but structurally simple, sandy shores. We found that rock pool-dwelling species had relatively larger brains and telencephalons in particular, while sand-dwelling species had a larger optic tectum and …

Bones Of Contention: Bone Mineral Density Recovery In Celiac Disease—A Systematic Review, Patricia Grace-Farfaglia

Nutrition Sciences Faculty Publications

Metabolic bone disease is a frequent co-morbidity in newly diagnosed adults with celiac disease (CD), an autoimmune disorder triggered by the ingestion of dietary gluten. This systematic review of studies looked at the efficacy of the gluten-free diet, physical activity, nutrient supplementation, and bisphosphonates for low bone density treatment. Case control and cohort designs were identified from PubMed and other academic databases (from 1996 to 2015) that observed newly diagnosed adults with CD for at least one year after diet treatment using the dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA) scan. Only 20 out of 207 studies met the inclusion criteria. Methodological quality …

Measures: Maximal oxygen …

Support For Breastfeeding Mothers: Are You Violating The Law?, Phillip Atherton, Christine Buttrick May 2015

Support For Breastfeeding Mothers: Are You Violating The Law?, Phillip Atherton, Christine Buttrick

Nursing Student Publications

On March 23, 2010, President Obama signed the “Break Time for Nursing Mothers” law in the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act that requires employers to provide an opportunity for nursing mothers to breastfeed while at work. The law necessitates employers give a “reasonable” amount of time and a private space that is not a bathroom for the first year of a new infant’s life. In order to help mothers have access to breastfeeding, awareness of this law must be expanded, and the implementation of lactation programs in every workplace must be enforced so that mothers can continue to breastfeed …

How The Phoenix Took Wing: An Examination Of The Humanities Canon As It Relates To The Psychology Of Posttraumatic Growth, Stephen Dalton May 2015

How The Phoenix Took Wing: An Examination Of The Humanities Canon As It Relates To The Psychology Of Posttraumatic Growth, Stephen Dalton

Senior Theses

The investigation of posttraumatic growth as a psychological principle is giving researchers new ways to understand how it is that some people seem to thrive following events that are normally perceived as tragic and wholly negative. These survivors do not just bounce back from their tragedies; the researchers describe these people as “bouncing forward” – that is, the survivors report that their lives now are profoundly better than they were before the trauma. While the psychological research into posttraumatic growth is relatively new, the field of Humanities has conducted this same inquiry for several thousand years. For example, Friedrich Nietzsche …

Madness: Schizophrenia, Then And Now, Diane W. Aldrich

Senior Theses

In examining the subject of mental illness, it is clear that diseases and disorders of the brain have not received the same degree of attention in the United States, over the years, as have acute and infectious diseases of the body. This thesis discusses the history of research and treatment of brain disorders, generally, with particular emphasis on schizophrenia, the most serious of mental disorders. The narrative includes the story of my aunt, who was schizophrenic. The objective of this thesis is to add another voice to the many who have asked that the bar on mental health research and …

Psychometric Instrumentation: Reliability And Validity Of Instruments Used For Clinical Practice, Evidence-Based Practice Projects And Research Studies, Ann Mayo Rn, Dnsc, Faan

School of Nursing and Health Science: Faculty Scholarship

Clinical Nurse Specialists and other advanced practice nurses (APNs) are relied upon for their expert data based decision-making to ensure excellent clinical practice, high quality evidence-based practice projects, and efficacious research studies. Using measurement instruments to collect data that lack reliability and validity can compromise decisionmaking leading to deleterious results for patients, nurses, and healthcare organizations. The ultimate goal is to choose reliable instruments that produce valid data so that clinical trends, project evaluations, and research findings are trustworthy. Determining the quality of a given instruments is most often done through a critique process. Critiquing potential instruments for use is …

Interactions Between Sleep Habits And Self-Control, June J. Pilcher, Drew M. Morris, Janet Donnelly, Hayley B. Feigl

Publications

Good sleep habits and effective self-control are important components of successful functioning. Unfortunately chronic sleep loss and impaired self-control are common occurrences for many individuals which can lead to difficulty with daily self-control issues such as resisting impulses and maintaining attentive behavior. Understanding how self-control is depleted and how good sleep habits may help replenish and maintain the capacity for self-control is an important issue. A sleep-deprived individual who has expended the necessary resources for self-control is at an increased risk for succumbing to impulsive desires, poor attentional capacity, and compromised decision making. To date, few studies have investigated how …

A Framework For Clinical Healthcare Process Design: Investigating Applicability To Lean, Samuel Blake Ellsworth May 2015

A Framework For Clinical Healthcare Process Design: Investigating Applicability To Lean, Samuel Blake Ellsworth

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Healthcare delivery is a process-driven sequence of patient care treatments and services. A prescribed method for process design is required in order for healthcare organizations of the future not just to innovate, but to safely provide highly-reliable patient care. Some healthcare organizations have established the utilization of lean methodologies as a tool for process improvement. Other philosophies and methods such as Six-Sigma have also been introduced into hospitals to guide quality. Many of these efforts have provided theories or perspectives of quality improvement without being firmly connected to a model of application relative to clinical process design, process formulation, or …

Adapting The Standard Sir Disease Model In Order To Track And Predict The Spreading Of The Ebola Virus Using Twitter Data, Armin Smailhodzic

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

A method has been developed to track infectious diseases by using data mining of active Twitter accounts and its efficacy was demonstrated during the West African Ebola outbreak of 2014. Using a meme based n-gram semantic usage model to search the Twitter database for indications of illness, flight and death from the spread of Ebola in Africa, principally from Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia. Memes of interest relate disease to location and severity and are coupled to the density of Tweets and re-Tweets. The meme spreads through the community of social users in a fashion similar to nonlinear wave propagation- …
