Immigrant and Refugee Family Wellness Engagement Through Yoga and Zumba

Research poster stemming from IPEC mini-grant funded student project Immigrant And Refugee Family Wellness Engagement Through Yoga And Zumba. Students from multiple health professions collaborated to provide Yoga and Zumba classes at the Riverton Community Center. The project aimed to increase the participants’ ability to utilize stress reducing activities through a blend of student created heath education materials and yoga and zumba classes for refugee women and children.

A model has been developed to predict the approximate penetration depth into diverse classes of materials for a broad range of energetic incident electrons (<10 eV to >10 MeV, with better than 20% accuracy). The penetration depth—or range—of a material describes the maximum distance electrons can travel through a material, before losing all of its incident kinetic energy. This model leads to a predictive formula that estimates the penetration depth for materials without the need for supporting data, but rather using only basic material properties and a single fitting parameter (Nv, described as the effective number of valence electrons). Exposure to diesel exhaust, as well as the diesel particulate matter associated with the exhaust has shown to cause adverse health effect in humans. The International Agency for Research on Cancer classified diesel exhaust as a group 1 human carcinogen, in June of 2012. Due to these health effects, there has been an effort in the mining industry to reduce the amount of worker exposure to diesel exhaust. Every year, more than 400 people in the U.S. die from accidental Carbon Monoxide (CO) poisoning. Carbon monoxide is a colorless, odorless, poisonous gas that results from incomplete burning of common fuels such as natural gas and propane. When CO is inhaled, it enters the blood stream and reduces the ability of blood to carry oxygen. The environment for ice fishing is cold and ice fishermen who use ice huts or tents commonly use portable propane heaters to heat their shelters.

This study evaluated the effectiveness of a parent-based intervention, the Parent Project, among 84 parents of at-risk youth. Results indicated improvements in child management, family involvement, parent-child affective quality, substance use rules communication, and parental self-efficacy at a 10-week follow-up.

Growing scientific evidence suggests that intricate interactions of genetic risk factors with environmental exposures play a major role in the development of chronic pain conditions. In studies of relative contribution of an individual’s genetic composition to the perception of pain, the general characteristics of pain sensitivity are typically measured by a wide range of different, yet possibly etiologically related pain phenotypes. Testing each of these pain-perception traits individually is subject to problems of multiple testing and low statistical power. In Yunnan Province alone, 77.7 % of intravenous drug users are co-infected with HIV and hepatitis C. More than 1 million workers are employed in Grounds Maintenance operations in the United States today. These workers perform varied but recurring tasks necessary to maintain the orderly and healthful function of parks, residential and commercial landscapes, and institutional grounds.

Technological advancements in machinery have, over time, vastly increased the productive impact of each worker. While fewer workers are needed per acre, the same advances in production have amplified some types of health risk to this work population.

This paper discusses the issues, objectives, methods, results and conclusion of how to control/reduce the respirable crystalline silica exposure to construction workers in the organization hereafter referred to as the “Company.” This evaluation will be achieved by assessing the following occupational exposure tools: literature review, work practices, engineering controls and personal protective equipment (PPE) on exposures to silica during construction activities. Since 2000, the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) has reported 737 injuries involving bagging. Most of these injuries were related to “over-exertion” with an MSHA injury classification of “strains, sprains, and ruptured discs.” “Over-exertion” accounted for 331,130 injuries totaling 14.2 billion dollars in workers compensation costs in 2012 according to the National Safety Council (NSC). According to NSC, the average total incurred cost of an “over-exertion” injury is $42,883/claim, and the average total incurred cost of a “strain/sprain” injury is $31,521/claim.

Present techniques of measuring blood flow velocity involve expensive procedures such as Doppler echocardiography, Doppler ultrasound, and magnetic resonance imaging [11,12]. Roughly 20% of all Medicare fee-for-service clients are readmitted within 30 days of hospital discharge, resulting in $17 billion annually. It is estimated that 75% of these readmissions are avoidable. Research has demonstrated that a broad range of socioeconomic and personal factors impact readmission rates. This study seeks to address such factors through a hospital-based Lay Health Worker (LHW) model for transition of care.
