In comparing the effect of Maté to that of green tea, it has been shown that Maté has higher anti-oxidative properties. We have shown that the extract of Yerba Maté, paraguariensis, leaves does indeed have strong anti-oxidative properties through the evaluation of its scavenging activity and its ability of assist cardiomyocytes in their recovery from induced oxidative stress using both spectroscopy, a colorimetric assay and flow cytometry. In order to elucidate the mechanism behind this action, we quantified the enzymes known to be expressed naturally by cells under oxidative stress such as glutathione peroxidase, superoxide dismutase, and catalase. Purpose: In 2009 we conducted a study to explore Ugandan nurses’ practice of universal precautions while caring for persons living with HIV. During our interviews about universal precautions, nurses’ also shared their experience with post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) following needle-stick injuries. We present findings related to nurses’ understanding of PEP and their experience with, and reporting of, needle stick injuries.

Background: Definitions of advanced nursing practice abound, yet little has been published concerning the context for advanced nursing in sub-Saharan Africa. This study set out to explore the existence of, and potential for, advanced nursing practice in Kenya.

Methods: Ten nurses were invited to participate in semi-structured qualitative interviews. Participants were purposively selected to provide insight into the practice of experienced nurses in urban, rural, community, hospital, public and private health care settings. Interview narratives were recorded, transcribed and subsequently analysed using a thematic approach.

Lung transplantation is the last recourse for patients with severe respiratory failure. However, transplantable lungs do not keep up with the demand, and 15.4% of patients die awaiting transplant. An alternative therapy is extracorporeal life support (ECLS), which uses a pump and an oxygenator to serve as a bridge to transplant. However, this technology limits ambulation and requires ICU care. This novel study implements pumpless arteriovenous (AV) ECLS technology to remove CO2 via the subclavian vessels, providing respiratory support and hypercapnia (excessive CO2 retention) sympton relief for patients while allowing ambulation.

Gambling disorder is an addictive behavior in which valuables are wagered in neglect of financial losses and delusions of financial gain. To predict problem gambling behavior, a survey of Machiavellian personalities, money attitudes, and impulsive/compulsive buying behavior was administered to 410 students at UNLV. The results suggested that disordered gambling behavior may be predicted by Money Status scores. Specifically, amorality, money worship, and money vigilance were significant in predicting African-American pathological gambling. For Asians, only money vigilance loaded significantly.

To evaluate the effectiveness of the addition of epirubicin to conventional chemotherapy as a first-line therapy for stage III–IV epithelial ovarian cancer. Materials and methods: A total of 132 patients who had undergone primary cytoreductive surgery between January 1998 and March 2003 were enrolled in the study. Twenty-four cases were excluded. Out of the remaining 108 subjects, 35 received epirubicin/paclitaxel/carboplatin (Group EPC) and 73 were treated with paclitaxel/platinum (cisplatin or carboplatin) (Group PC). Early Clinical Predictors Of Intractable Epilepsy In Childhood, Semra Saygi, İlknur Erol, Füsun Alehan

In this retrospective study, we evaluated the clinical responses to antiepileptic drug (AED) therapy in pediatric epilepsy patients treated at a single center. Materials and methods: We identified 28 children with intractable epilepsy and 213 patients with drug-responsive epilepsy. Results: Univariate analysis showed that age at onset, high (daily) initial seizure frequency, infantile spasm, history of neonatal seizures, abnormal neurodevelopmental status, neurological abnormalities, mental retardation, remote symptomatic etiology, and abnormal brain imaging results were significant risk factors for the development of intractable epilepsy (P < 0.05). Multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed that high (daily) initial seizure frequency and remote symptomatic etiology were significant and independent risk factors for intractable epilepsy (P < 0.05). Conclusion: Our study suggests that the risk of developing intractable epilepsy in childhood may be predicted, to some extent, by the early clinical course. Early identification of patients at high risk of developing intractable epilepsy will guide appropriate therapy and reduce exposure to ineffectual treatments.
