Background/Significance: Alzheimer Disease (AD) is an irreversible dementia that progressively destroys cognitive and daily functioning. About 5.4 million Americans currently suffer from AD, with estimated prevalence to reach 16 million by 2050 (Alzheimer's Association, 2012). AD is often regarded with fear, as most affected individuals eventually fail to recognize loved ones, lose the ability to care for themselves, and may display negative neuropsychiatric behaviors, such as apathy. Apathy is a disorder of motivation with deficits in behavioral, emotional, and/or cognitive domains and is conceptualized as a need-driven behavior, based on the Need-Driven Dementia-Compromised Behavior Model (Algase et al., 1996). Our Pathscan Enabler IV, delivered July 2014, uses the QuickScan software to scan a histology slide in "two clicks" (after loading the
slide):
1. Push the QuickScan button on the front of the Pathscan Enabler.
2. Click the Scan button in the QuickScan pop-up application (optional: change scan area in the Prescan image window).
The image gets saved as a TIFF file to the Windows 7 (64-bit) desktop.
I have been using Pathscan Enabler's since version I in 2000. See Chantrain et al 2003:

Comparative Analysis Of Family Planning Use And Attitudes In Urban Versus Rural Madagascar, Gwendolyn Cummings
Comparative Analysis Of Family Planning Use And Attitudes In Urban Versus Rural Madagascar, Gwendolyn Cummings
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
Despite many differences between urban and rural areas of Madagascar, large families are staples in Malagasy culture throughout. However, family planning has recently become one of the most in-demand aspects of healthcare in the country. The discrepancies between rural and urban zones are apparent in this new wave of contraceptive use and child spacing. Interviews in both Andasibe (a rural region of Madagascar) and Antananarivo (the urban capital of the country) were combined with a review of current literature on the subject, in order to distinguish the differences between the two. Ultimately it was found that socioeconomic background and preference …

Manuscript abstract: Context: There is no consensus on the vitamin D status of children and adolescents with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Aim: To determine the vitamin D status of patients with IBD by comparing their serum 25(OH)D concentration to that of healthy controls. Hypothesis: Serum 25(OH)D concentration will be lower in patients with IBD compared to controls. Subjects and Methods: A case-controlled retrospective study of subjects with IBD (n=58) of 2-20 years (male n=31, age 16.38 ± 2.21 years; female n=27, age16.56 ± 2.08 years) and healthy controls (n=116; male n=49, age 13.90 ± 4.59 years; female n=67, age 15.04 …

We analyzed the CD4+ T-lymphocyte responses to dengue, West Nile, and yellow fever viruses 4 months after immunization of a volunteer with an experimental live-attenuated dengue virus type 1 vaccine (DEN-1 45AZ5). We examined bulk culture proliferation to noninfectious antigens, determined the precursor frequency of specific CD4+ T cells by limiting dilution, and established and analyzed CD4+ T-cell clones. Bulk culture proliferation was predominantly dengue virus type 1 specific with a lesser degree of cross-reactive responses to other dengue virus serotypes, West Nile virus, and yellow fever virus. Precursor frequency determination by limiting dilution in the presence of noninfectious dengue …

Sudden Unexpected Nocturnal Death In Chiari Type 1 Malformation And Potential Role Of Opioid Analgesics, F. Roohi, T. Gropen, R. W. Kula
Journal Articles
BACKGROUND: Chiari malformation type 1 (CM1) is a common congenital anomaly of the craniocervical junction. CM1 is reported to run a usually benign course and patients typically experience no symptoms or chronic, slowly progressive symptoms. However, recent reports indicate that a subset of patients with CM1 may present with acute deterioration and sudden unexpected death (SUD). We report a case of SUD during sleep in a young man with CM1, which we believe was related to the administration of common and therapeutic doses of narcotic analgesics for the management of pain. We will clarify the pathophysiology of acute deterioration and …
