Understanding Unintended Pregnancy In Senegal: Country Profile Report, Kaila Clarke, Mohamadou Sall, Babacar Mane, Nafissatou Diop, Bocar Mamadou Daff

As part of the Strengthening Evidence for Programming on Unintended Pregnancy (STEP UP) research program, the Population Council has developed a Country Profile Report to understand unwanted pregnancies in Senegal. The Population Council conducted a literature review, analyzed available survey data, and conducted interviews to discuss some aspects in more detail with a number of key stakeholders. The Country Profile was discussed at a two-day workshop in Dakar bringing together key government actors at the central and regional levels, nongovernmental organizations, and civil society actors. The report is composed of six chapters, summarized in this evidence brief.

The seminar brought together 24 scientists, policymakers, and program managers to present and discuss a range of issues relating to postpartum and post-abortion family planning. In developing countries, postpartum hemorrhage and complications related to unsafe abortions are direct causes of maternal death. In Senegal, actions have been undertaken by the government to reduce this burden and significant advances have been made in these areas in recent years. However, progress is still necessary to achieve the Millennium Development Goals for the reduction of the maternal mortality rate to the target numbers by 2015. This report documents the living conditions and health risks of slum-dwellers across Nairobi’s informal settlements a decade after the Nairobi Cross-sectional Slums Survey (NCSS) of 2000. It aims to not only highlight the needs of slum-dwellers but also inform policymakers on the changes that have occurred in the living conditions of Nairobi’s urban poor since 2000, considering development interventions by the Government of Kenya and its development partners. The NCSS 2012 results highlight marked improvements in environmental, health, and educational indicators among slum dwellers. This study examined how pregnancy prevention and management services (specifically, the provision of emergency contraception, pregnancy testing and counseling, and termination or referral for termination of pregnancy services) feature within post-rape care services in sub-Saharan Africa. The study drew on a range of sources via a desk review, as well as on information provided through key informant interviews. The existence of numerous national guidelines in the region demonstrates countries’ desire to respond to this public health and legal challenge. Coping With Unintended Pregnancies: Narratives From Adolescents In Nairobi's Slums, Joyce Mumah, Caroline W. Kabiru, Chimaraoke O. Izugbara, Carol Mukiira

This qualitative study examined the challenges faced by adolescents in Kenya with regard to unintended pregnancies and how adolescents in urban slum settlements manage and cope with unintended pregnancies. The study’s findings suggest that high levels of unintended pregnancy among young people in Kenya’s urban slums are linked to myths and misconceptions about contraception. Other findings underscore the fact that many young people lack access to contraception and reproductive health services; indicate that unintended pregnancies are linked to sexual violence; and highlight the need for government to manage the high levels of school dropout as a result of an unintended …

A review of literature and analysis of large surveys were carried out with funding from the STEP UP consortium led by Population Council to build a coherent body of robust research-based evidence on the situation in India in the context of unmet need for family planning (FP) and safe abortion services. The study found that there is insufficient training of different cadres of health staff in the public health system on abortion provision, post-abortion care, FP counseling of young couples, emergency contraception, and IUD insertion/removal. This is a formative study aiming to identify the main barriers to the provision and uptake of quality postpartum family planning (PPFP) services at the supply, access, demand, and policy levels in Burkina Faso. This study reveals that there are substantial shortfalls in the availability of quality PPFP at all these levels. Several systems for treating alcohol-use disorders (AUDs) exist that operate on mobile phones. These systems are categorized into four groups: text-messaging monitoring and reminder systems, text-messaging intervention systems, comprehensive recovery management systems, and game-based systems. Text-messaging monitoring and reminder systems deliver reminders and prompt reporting of alcohol consumption, enabling continuous monitoring of alcohol use. Text-messaging intervention systems additionally deliver text messages designed to promote abstinence and recovery. Comprehensive recovery management systems use the capabilities of smart-phones to provide a variety of tools and services that can be tailored to individuals, including in-the-moment assessments and access to peer discussion groups. Existing knowledge about alcohol misuse and abuse and nursing students is founded upon studies conducted primarily in the 1980's and 1990's, thus raising questions as to its relevance in 2014. The patterns of alcohol use and other substances over the past 30 years by students raise several questions concerning this phenomenon, which needs further explanation beyond just the high stress and demands of nursing education. Prostate cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in American men. The interaction of androgen with its receptor (AR) is one of the major pathways that contributes to the progression of prostate cancer. As a result, hormone deprivation is a major strategy for prostate cancer treatment, but the emergence of castration resistant prostate cancer (CRPC) is a major clinical problem. Recently, the novel AR inhibitor, enzalutamide, demonstrated improved survival in men with metastatic CRPC by 4.8 months (13.8 vs 18.4 months in placebo vs treated groups) (18). Kidney disease and toxicity is increasingly being tied to mitochondrial dysfunction. Cheminformatic modeling and high-throughput phenotypic screens can discover discrete subsets of selective ligands that correlate with mitochondrial biogenesis (MB) and accelerate recovery from acute kidney injury (AKI). Serotonergic (5-HT) stimulation has been shown to cause MB. Subtype specific ligands for 5-HT1F and 5-HTA/C receptors show increased uncoupled oxygen consumption rate (OCR). Our overall goal, in a screening assay, is to discover small molecules that increase MB to be used as drugs in the treatment of diseases that exhibit mitochondrial dysfunction. It would be of benefit to clinicians to have a technique for canal preparation that would allow for predictable length control. This study compared straight canals instrumented to a size 40 file using a 0.04 standardized taper preparation (STP) with a varied taper preparation (VTP) by evaluating the extension of GuttaCore® (GC) obturators (Dentsply Tulsa Dental, Tulsa, OK). Successful acquisition of literacy depends on adequate development of decoding skills as well as broader, meaning-related knowledge and skills for text comprehension. Children from low socioeconomic status (SES) backgrounds are often challenged in both domains, relative to peers who are not economically disadvantaged. The efficacy of code-focused instructional programs for at-risk preliterate children is well supported, but less evidence is available regarding interventions to improve broader language and comprehension skills. Electrostatic charging occurs in most aerosol generation processes and can significantly influence subsequent particle deposition rates and patterns in the respiratory tract through the image and space forces. The behavior of inhaled aerosols with charge is expected to be most affected in the upper airways, where particles come in close proximity to the narrow turbinate surface, and before charge dissipation occurs as a result of high humidity. The objective of this study was to quantitatively evaluate the deposition of charged aerosols in an MRI-based nasal-laryngeal airway model.
