Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in bacteria, particularly in foodborne pathogens, has increasingly become apparent in most parts of the world including ASEAN countries, creating great impact on economy, human and animal health and international food trade. The tendency of bacterial pathogens to become multidrug resistant (MDR) is the most serious concern in AMR. The ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) will be fully established in 2015 and ASEAN cooperation has acknowledged the significance of food safety, of which AMR is one of the major concerns. There is a need for all ASEAN nations to harmonize its AMR monitoring and surveillance programmes in order …

Financial Security Scorecard: A State-By-State Analysis Of Economic Pressures Facing Future Retirees, Christian Weller, Nari Rhee, Carolyn Arcand

Public Policy and Public Affairs Faculty Publication Series

As Americans increasingly worry about their retirement prospects, states play an important and growing role in retirement security policy. States already manage long-term care programs for the elderly through Medicaid. Concerned about the impact of future elder poverty on state and local budgets and their local economies, a number of states are exploring the creation of low-cost and low-risk retirement savings plans for private sector workers who lack access to pensions or 401(k)s on the job. Some states have developed programs to help older workers find work.

This report presents the Financial Security Scorecard, designed to inform state-level stakeholders and …

Nature Of The Neurotoxic Membrane Actions Of Amyloid-Β On Hippocampal Neurons In Alzheimer's Disease, Fernando J. Sepúlveda, Humberto Fierro, Eduardo Fernandez, Carolina Castillo, Robert W. Peoples, Carlos Opazo, Luis G. Aguayo

Biomedical Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

The mechanism by which amyloid-β (Aβ) produces brain dysfunction in patients with Alzheimer's disease is largely unknown. According to previous studies, Aβ might share perforating properties with gramicidin, a well-accepted membrane-disrupting peptide. Therefore, we hypothesize that the key steps leading to synaptotoxicity by Aβ and gramicidin involve peptide aggregation, pore formation, and calcium dysregulation. Here, we show that Aβ and gramicidin form aggregates enriched in β-sheet structures using electron microscopy, and Thioflavin and Congo Red staining techniques. Also, we found that Aβ and gramicidin display fairly similar actions in hippocampal cell membranes, i.e. inducing Ca2+ entry and synaptoxicity characterized …

Emergency Department Length Of Stay: Accuracy Of Patient Estimates, Brendan T. Parker, Catherine A. Marco Mar 2014

Emergency Department Length Of Stay: Accuracy Of Patient Estimates, Brendan T. Parker, Catherine A. Marco

Emergency Medicine Faculty Publications

Introduction

Managing a patient’s expectations in the emergency department (ED) environment is challenging. Previous studies have identified several factors associated with ED patient satisfaction. Lengthy wait times have shown to be associated with dissatisfaction with ED care. Understanding that patients are inaccurate at their estimation of wait time, which could lead to lower satisfaction, provides administrators possible points of intervention to help improve accuracy of estimation and possibly satisfaction with the ED. This study was undertaken to examine the accuracy of patient estimates of time periods in an ED and identify factors associated with accuracy.

In this prospective convenience …

Tachycardia Mediated Cardiomyopathy: Pathophysiology, Mechanisms, Clinical Features And Management., Shuchita Gupta, Vincent M. Figueredo, M.D. Mar 2014

Tachycardia Mediated Cardiomyopathy: Pathophysiology, Mechanisms, Clinical Features And Management., Shuchita Gupta, Vincent M. Figueredo, M.D.

Division of Cardiology Faculty Papers

Tachycardia mediated cardiomyopathy (TMC) is a reversible form of dilated cardiomyopathy that can occur with most supraventricular and ventricular arrhythmias. Despite the plethora of literature describing this entity in animal models, as well as humans, it remains poorly understood. Over the last decade, new etiologies of TMC, such as frequent premature ventricular complexes in normal hearts, have been identified. Recent advances in catheter-based ablation therapies, particularly for atrial fibrillation and ventricular arrhythmias, have added a new dimension to the treatment of this condition. This review describes the pathophysiology, proposed mechanisms, clinical features and management in various arrhythmic conditions.

Detection Of Parasite-Specific Dna In Urine Sediment Obtained By Filtration Differentiates Between Single And Mixed Infections Of Schistosoma Mansoni And S. Haematobium From Endemic Areas In Ghana, Nilanjan Lodh, Jean M. Naples, Kwabena M. Bosompem, Joseph Quartey, Clive J. Shiff

Clinical Lab Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

Differential diagnosis of Schistosoma mansoni and S. haematobium, which often occur sympatrically in Africa, requires both urine and stool and the procedures are low in sensitivity. The standard diagnostic tests, such as Kato-Katz (KK) for S. mansoni eggs and presence of haematuria for S. haematobium both lack sensitivity, produce false-negative results and show reduced accuracy with decreasing intensity of infection. The need for a single diagnostic test with high sensitivity and specificity for both parasites is important as many African countries are implementing Mass Drug Administration (MDA) following recommendations of the World Health Organization (WHO). Eighty-six samples of urine …

Benefits And Barriers To Hiv Testing In A Population Of Federal Detention Inmates, Nicole A. Knight Mar 2014

Benefits And Barriers To Hiv Testing In A Population Of Federal Detention Inmates, Nicole A. Knight

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Voluntary HIV testing in combination with early medical intervention has been shown to be effective in reducing the rate of new infections and improving the health and life expectancy of those living with HIV. There are however several high-risk populations in the US that remain largely unreached by HIV testing efforts, some of which could be reached while they spend time in prison or jail. Per current Bureau of Prisons (BOP) policy, HIV testing is routinely offered only to “high risk” pretrial and sentenced inmates. We conducted a cross-sectional study with 721 pretrial and sentenced inmates who entered a large …

Towards A Better Treatment Of Parkinson's Disease, Bradley Darryl Karain Mar 2014

Towards A Better Treatment Of Parkinson's Disease, Bradley Darryl Karain

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Current therapies for Parkinson's Disease, the second most common neurodegenerative disorder, do not prevent disease progression, and induce extremely detrimental side-effects. Improving the best current pharmacological therapy, L-DOPA, carries important clinical benefits, partly by reducing the dose-related side-effects which occur after five to ten years of use. Thus the central aim of this proposal is to determine whether low doses of a D2 antagonist may, by selectively blocking the dopamine autoreceptor-mediated feedback inhibition of dopamine neurons, potentiate L-DOPA's effect on individual basal ganglia neurons and its antiparkinsonian effects in Parkinsonian animals. Electrophysiology (extracellular single-cell recording in the globus pallidus) and …

Survivin: Regulation By Yy1 And Role In Pancreatic Cancer Combination Therapy, Nicholas R. Galloway

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Despite significant clinical and basic science advancements, cancer remains a devastating disease that affects people of all ages, races, and background. Survivin, the fourth most common transcript found in cancer cells, is a protein that is thought to be involved in the enhanced proliferation, survival, and metastasis of cancer cells. Therefore understanding how this gene is regulated is potentially of vital importance to improving cancer management and therapy. Our work has identified a novel transcriptional regulator of survivin called Yin Yang 1 (YY1). YY1 is a transcription factor that has been observed to activate some gene promoters and repress others, …
