Reduction In Post-Botulinum Toxin Flu-Like Symptoms After Injection With Incobotulinum Toxin, Edwin George, Natalya Shneyder

Neurology Faculty Publications

OBJECTIVE: To determine if patients reporting flu-like symptoms (FLS) after botulinum toxin (BoNT) injections are less susceptible to this reaction after incobotulinum toxin.

BACKGROUND: Approximately 10% of patients injected with BoNT in our clinic complain of FLS, primarily malaise, myalgias and rhinorrhea, beginning a few days to one week after injection and lasting one week or less. A review by Baizabal-Carvallo et al. (Toxicon, 2011, 58:1-7) found rates of FLS between 1.7 and 20% in patients after various preparations of botulinum toxin A, and a subsequent study showed increased cytokines in patients with FLS (Neurotoxicity Research, …

Diet And Exercise Interventions Following Coronary Artery Bypass Graft Surgery: A Review And Call To Action, Garrett N. Coyan, Katherine M. Reeder

College of Nursing Faculty Publications

Coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery has been used for the treatment of coronary artery disease (CAD) for approximately 50 years, and has been performed on millions of people globally. However, little is known about the impact of diet and exercise on long-term outcomes of patients who have undergone CABG surgery. Although clinical practice guidelines on the management of this patient population have been available for approximately 2 decades, evidence regarding secondary prevention behavioral interventions, lifestyle modifications and self-management to slow the progressive decline of CAD, reduce cardiac hospitalizations, and prevent reoperation remains virtually absent from the literature. Diet and …

Honor The Molst, Teresa Guarino May 2014

Honor The Molst, Teresa Guarino

Senior Honors Projects

End of life is a topic many people would rather avoid discussing. Even many healthcare providers are uncomfortable with the topic, and they are at the front line in terms of providing information to patients about their care options. Nevertheless, it is a topic of utmost importance. Regardless of what one values and what choices have been made, preferences and desires at the end of life should be honored. This was the aim of documents such as advanced directives, living wills, and durable power of attorneys for healthcare, but they have been found to not be consistently honored. Seeing this …

Neuroimaging And Eyewitness Testimony, Madysen Gardner May 2014

Neuroimaging And Eyewitness Testimony, Madysen Gardner

Themis: Research Journal of Justice Studies and Forensic Science

This paper will explore how breakthroughs in neuroscience, specifically neuroimaging, can be used to validate eyewitness testimony. Though the use of direct evidence is decreasing, due to findings of numerous wrongful convictions that were based on eyewitness testimonies, it is still an element of many criminal trials today. Cross-examination is used to validate eyewitness testimony because memories are fallible. Cross-examination can successfully determine if a witness is telling the truth, but it cannot determine if a memory is true. This has resulted in juries convicting individuals based on questionable eyewitness testimony. Neuroscientists have found that neuroimaging methods, such as functional …

Targeting Therapy To The Neuromuscular Junction: Proof Of Concept, Linda L. Kusner, Namita Satija, Georgiana Cheng, Henry J. Kaminski May 2014

Targeting Therapy To The Neuromuscular Junction: Proof Of Concept, Linda L. Kusner, Namita Satija, Georgiana Cheng, Henry J. Kaminski

Pharmacology and Physiology Faculty Publications

Introduction: The site of pathology in myasthenia gravis (MG) is the neuromuscular junction (NMJ). Our goal was to determine the ability to direct complement inhibition to the NMJ.

Methods: A single-chain antibody directed against the alpha subunit of the acetylcholine receptor was synthesized (scFv-35) and coupled to decay-accelerating factor (DAF, scFv-35-DAF). scFv-35-DAF was tested in a passive model of experimentally acquired MG.

Results: Administration of scFv-35-DAF to mice deficient in intrinsic complement inhibitors produced no weakness despite confirmation of its localization to the NMJ and no evidence of tissue destruction related to complement activation. Rats with experimentally …

Evidence That Bdnf Regulates Heart Rate By A Mechanism Involving Increased Brainstem Parasympathetic Neuron Excitability, Ruqian Wan, Letitia A. Weigand, Ryan Bateman, Kathleen Griffioen, David Mendelowitz, Mark P. Mattson May 2014

Evidence That Bdnf Regulates Heart Rate By A Mechanism Involving Increased Brainstem Parasympathetic Neuron Excitability, Ruqian Wan, Letitia A. Weigand, Ryan Bateman, Kathleen Griffioen, David Mendelowitz, Mark P. Mattson

Pharmacology and Physiology Faculty Publications

Autonomic control of heart rate is mediated by cardioinhibitory parasympathetic cholinergic neurons located in the brainstem and stimulatory sympathetic noradrenergic neurons. During embryonic development the survival and cholinergic phenotype of brainstem autonomic neurons is promoted by brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF). We now provide evidence that BDNF regulates heart rate by a mechanism involving increased brainstem cardioinhibitory parasympathetic activity. Mice with a BDNF haploinsufficiency exhibit elevated resting heart rate, and infusion of BDNF intracerebroventricularly reduces heart rate in both wild-type and BDNF+/− mice. The atropine-induced elevation of heart rate is diminished in BDNF+/− mice and is restored by BDNF infusion, whereas …

Paying For Prescribed Drugs In Medicaid: Current Policy And Upcoming Changes, Brian K. Bruen, Katherine Young May 2014

Paying For Prescribed Drugs In Medicaid: Current Policy And Upcoming Changes, Brian K. Bruen, Katherine Young

Health Policy and Management Issue Briefs

Since the early 2000s, state Medicaid programs have made concerted efforts to control the cost of prescription drug spending. One crucial aspect in doing so is using a pharmacy reimbursement methodology that best reflects actual drug costs. Currently, states set pharmacy reimbursement policy within broad federal guidelines, resulting in a complex mix of reimbursement rules. Many states use list prices to set reimbursement levels, and these list prices increasingly have been criticized as not accurately reflecting the cost of the drug. Specifically, there are concerns that some benchmarks lead to inflated reimbursement levels. As a result, the federal government has …

Manganese-Containing Prussian Blue Nanoparticles For Imaging Of Pediatric Brain Tumors, Matthieu F. Dumont, Sridevi Yadavilli, Raymond Sze, Javad Nazarian, Rohan Fernandes

Radiology Faculty Publications

Pediatric brain tumors (PBTs) are a leading cause of death in children. For an improved prognosis in patients with PBTs, there is a critical need to develop molecularly-specific imaging agents to monitor disease progression and response to treatment. In this paper, we describe manganese-containing Prussian blue nanoparticles as agents for molecular magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and fluorescence-based imaging of PBTs. Our core-shell nanoparticles consist of a core lattice structure that incorporates and retains paramagnetic Mn2+ ions, and generates MRI contrast (both negative and positive). The biofunctionalized shell is comprised of fluorescent avidin, which serves the dual purpose of enabling …

Exploring The Neuro-Occupational Relationship Between Routine Family Mealtimes And Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder (Asd), Megan Shea

Neuro-Occupation Papers

There is a widely held opinion that eating is one of the most significant, emotional, and enjoyable daily occupations. Mealtimes provide a sense of familiarity, comfort, and structure to our days, while the preparation of meals often provides opportunities for us to socialize, acquire new skills, and develop meaningful roles (Hasselkus, 2002). The sharing of routine family meals is associated with numerous neurological, psychosocial, developmental, and educational benefits, including increased family communication and cohesiveness, and opportunities for parents to model healthy eating patterns and behaviors (Absolom & Roberts, 2011). However, prevalence rates indicate that mealtime difficulties are very common in …

One-On-One Delivery Of Living Well With A Disability, Tracy Boehm, Craig Ravesloot Ph.D., University Of Montana Rural Institute Rural Institute

Health and Wellness

The RTC: Rural conducted a research project on health management support for rural Americans. The approach used individually-focused programs, one of which included selected content from the Living Well with a Disability (LWD) health promotion program. The project noted that transportation and limited access to group-based programs in rural areas may act as barriers for participation in health promotion programs. Findings suggest the traditional 10- week LWD group-based program is the recommended practice, but a shorter LWD program delivered one-on-one with a consumer may be an option in rural areas.
