Objective. To determine the feasibility and effectiveness of adding a hand hygiene exercise in self-screening for Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus (MRSA) nasal colonization to a health care delivery course for first-year pharmacy (P1) students.

Design. About one month after students were trained in hand hygiene technique and indications, faculty members demonstrated how to self-screen for MRSA nasal colonization. Students were then asked to screen themselves during the required class time. Aggregated class results were shared and compared to prevalence estimates for the general population and health care providers.

Introduction: Two new microbicide products based on topical (vaginal) application of antiretroviral drugs – 1% tenofovir gel and the dapivirine ring – are currently in late-stage clinical testing, and results on their safety and effectiveness are expected to become available in early 2015. WHO guidelines on the use of topical pre-exposure prophylaxis (topical PrEP) are important in order to ensure that these new prevention products are optimally used.

We are interested in identifying and characterizing loci of the human genome that harbor sequences resembling known mitochondrial and nuclear tRNAs. To this end, we used the known nuclear and mitochondrial tRNA genes (the "tRNA-Reference" set) to search for "tRNA-lookalikes" and found many such loci at different levels of sequence conservation. We find that the large majority of these tRNA-lookalikes resemble mitochondrial tRNAs and exhibit a skewed over-representation in favor of some mitochondrial anticodons. Our analysis shows that the tRNA-lookalikes have infiltrated specific chromosomes and are preferentially located in close proximity to known nuclear tRNAs (z-score ≤ -2.54, P-value ≤ …

Aim

This study aimed to compare rural and urban nurse residency programme participants’ personal and job characteristics and perceptions of decision-making, job satisfaction, job stress, nursing performance and organisational commitment over time.

Background

Nurse residency programmes are an evolving strategy to foster transition to practice for new nurses. However, there are limited data available for programme outcomes particularly for rural nurses.

Method

A longitudinal design sampled 382 urban and 86 rural newly licensed hospital nurses during a 12-month nurse residency programme. Data were collected at the start of the programme, at 6 months and the end of the programme.

This study reports on the effect of fatigue on Urology residents using the daVinci surgical skills simulator (dVSS). Seven Urology residents performed a series of selected exercises on the dVSS while pre-call and post-call. Prior to dVSS performance a survey of subjective fatigue was taken and residents were tested with the Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS). Using the metrics available in the dVSS software, the performance of each resident was evaluated. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate hip abductor and adductor peak torque outputs and compare their ratios between sexes.

DESIGN: A cross-sectional laboratory-controlled study.

SETTING: Participants visited a laboratory and performed an isokinetic hip abductor and adductor test. All participants performed 2 sets of 5 repetitions of concentric hip abduction and adduction in a standing position at 60 degrees per second. Gravity was determined as a function of joint angle relative to the horizontal plane and was corrected by normalizing the weight of the limb on an individual basis.

Introduction: This study was designed to evaluate, via tensile and bend testing, the mechanical properties of a newly-developed monocrystalline orthodontic archwire comprised of a blend of copper, aluminum, and nickel (CuAlNi). Methods: The sample was comprised of three shape memory alloys; CuAlNi, copper nickel titanium (CuNiTi), and nickel titanium (NiTi); from various orthodontic manufacturers in both 0.018” round and 0.019” x 0.025” rectangular dimensions. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this article is to evaluate the burden of direct and indirect costs borne by recalled patients after a false positive screening mammogram.

METHODS: Women aged 40-75 years undergoing screening mammography were identified from a U.S. commercial claims database. Women were required to have 12 months pre- and 6 months post-index enrollment to identify utilization and exclude patients with subsequent cancer diagnoses. Recall was defined as the use of diagnostic mammography or breast ultrasound during 6 months post-index. วัตถุประสงค์: เพื่อเปรียบเทียบความสุขสบายและภาพลักษณ์ระหว่างผู้ป่วยที่ใส่เสื้อกระชับแผลและ ประคองทรงหลังผ่าตัดเต้านมออกกับผู้ป่วยที่ได้รับการปิดแผลด้วยวัสดุปิดแผลตามปกติ\n\n รูปแบบการวิจัย: การวิจัยแบบกึ่งทดลอง\n \nวิธีดําเนินการวิจัย: กลุ่มตัวอย่าง คือ ผู้ป่วยมะเร็งเต้านมที่รับไว้ในโรงพยาบาลเพื่อรับการผ่าตัดเต้านมออก จํานวน 30 ราย แบ่งเป็นกลุ่มควบคุมและกลุ่มทดลองกลุ่มละ 15 ราย กลุ่มทดลองได้รับการใส่เสื้อกระชับแผล และประคองทรงหลังผ่าตัด ส่วนกลุ่มควบคุมได้รับการปิดแผลด้วยวัสดุปิดแผลแบบปกติ เครื่องมือที่ใช้ ในการทดลอง คือ เสื้อกระชับแผลและประคองทรง เครื่องมือที่ใช้ในการเก็บรวบรวมข้อมูล คือ แบบ ประเมินความสุขสบายและแบบประเมินภาพลักษณ์ ซึ่งพัฒนาขึ้นโดยผู้วิจัยและผ่านการตรวจสอบความ ตรงตามเนื้อหาโดยผู้ทรงคุณวุฒิ นํามาหาดัชนีความตรงตามเนื้อหาได้ค่า CVI เท่ากับ .86 และ .86 ตาม ลําดับ หาความเที่ยงโดยคํานวณสัมประสิทธิ์อัลฟ่าของครอนบาคได้ค่าเท่ากับ .62 และ .77 ตามลําดับ วิเคราะห์ข้อมูลโดยใช้สถิติเชิงพรรณนา และสถิติทดสอบที\n \nผลการวิจัย: ผู้ป่วยมะเร็งเต้านมที่ใส่เสื้อกระชับแผลและประคองทรงหลังผ่าตัดเต้านมมีคะแนนเฉลี่ย ความสุขสบายและภาพลักษณ์สูงกว่ากลุ่มที่ปิดแผลด้วยวัสดุปิดแผลตามปกติอย่างมีนัยสําคัญทางสถิติที่ ระดับ .05\n\nสรุป: การสวมใส่เสื้อกระชับแผลและประคองทรงส่งผลให้ผู้ป่วยมีความสุขสบายมากขึ้นและมีภาพลักษณ์ ที่ดีขึ้น พยาบาลที่ให้การดูแลผู้ป่วยผ่าตัดเต้านมจึงควรนําเสื้อกระชับแผลและประคองทรงไปใช้เพื่อให้ ผู้ป่วยหลังผ่าตัดเต้านมมีความสุขสบายและมีภาพลักษณ์ที่ดี\n

วัตถุประสงค์: เพื่อพัฒนาแบบวัดการสื่อสารระหว่างผู้ปกครองและบุตรสาวเรื่องการละเว้นเพศสัมพันธ์ \nในวัยเรียน\n\nรูปแบบการวิจัย: การพัฒนาเครื่องมือ\n\nวิธีดําเนินการวิจัย: กลุ่มตัวอย่าง คือ วัยรุ่นหญิงที่กําลังศึกษาอยู่ในชั้นมัธยมศึกษาปีที่ 1-3 จํานวน 261คน ดําเนินการสร้างแบบวัดการสื่อสารระหว่างผู้ปกครองและบุตรสาวเรื่อง การละเว้นเพศสัมพันธ์ ในวัยเรียน ตามขั้นตอนดังนี้ 1) กําหนดนิยามเชิงปฏิบัติการ จากการศึกษาแนวคิดและการสนทนากลุ่ม กับวัยรุ่นหญิงที่กําลังศึกษาอยู่ในชั้นมัธยมศึกษาปีที่ 1-3 จํานวน 9 คน 2) สร้างข้อคําถามตามคํานิยาม เชิงปฏิบัติการที่ประกอบด้วย 3 มิติ จํานวน 25 ข้อ ลักษณะคําตอบเป็นแบบมาตรวัดประมาณค่า 5 ระดับ ตั้งแต่ เป็นประจํา (5 คะแนน) ถึง ไม่เคยเลย (1 คะแนน) 3) ตรวจสอบความตรงเชิงเนื้อหาของแบบวัด โดยผู้เชี่ยวชาญ 5 คน ได้ค่าดัชนีความตรงเท่ากับ .95 โดยไม่มีข้อใดถูกตัดออก 4) หาความเที่ยงโดยนํา ไปทดลองใช้กับวัยรุ่นหญิงที่กําลังศึกษาอยู่ในชั้นมัธยมศึกษาปีที่ 1-3 จํานวน 30 คน ได้ค่าสัมประสิทธิ์ อัลฟ่าของครอนบาค เท่ากับ .94 และ 5) ตรวจสอบความตรงเชิงโครงสร้าง (Construct validity) โดย การวิเคราะห์ปัจจัย (Factor analysis) ของแบบวัดฯ ในนักเรียนหญิงจํานวน 261 คน\n\nผลการวิจัย: แบบวัดการสื่อสารระหว่างผู้ปกครองและบุตรสาวเรื่อง การละเว้นเพศสัมพันธ์ในวัยเรียน มีองค์ประกอบหลัก 4 องค์ประกอบ รวม 24 ข้อ คือ 1) ผลเสียของการมีเพศสัมพันธ์ในวัยเรียน ประกอบ ด้วยข้อคําถาม จํานวน 8 ข้อ สามารถอธิบายความแปรปรวนได้ร้อยละ 22.67, 2) การหลีกเลี่ยงโอกาส เสี่ยง / สถานการณ์ที่นําไปสู่การมีเพศสัมพันธ์ ประกอบด้วยข้อคําถาม จํานวน 8 ข้อ …

Background : Measurement of the thyroid uptake is usually performed with 131I to determine therapeutic dose in patients treated hyperthyroidism with 131I. 99mTc-pertechnetate is also trapped by the thyroid gland in a manner and to a degree very similar to iodine. This study may help identify patients who have discordance in diagnostic and radioactive iodine uptake (RAIU), for better management and treatment results. เหตุผลของการทำวิจัย : เครื่องออกกำลังกายกล้ามเนื้อหน้าท้องที่พัฒนาขึ้นมีประสิทธิภาพในการออกกำลังกายกล้ามเนื้อหน้าท้อง และสามารถออกกำลังกายกล้ามเนื้อหน้าท้องเฉพาะส่วนได้วัตถุประสงค์ : เพื่อพัฒนา ทดสอบประสิทธิภาพ และประเมินความพึงพอใจต่อเครื่องออกกำลังกายกล้ามเนื้อหน้าท้องรูปแบบการวิจัย : การวิจัยเชิงพัฒนาสถานที่ทำการศึกษา : ภาควิชากายภาพบำบัด คณะสหเวชศาสตร์ มหาวิทยาลัยนเรศวรตัวอย่างและวิธีการศึกษา : โดยการพัฒนาเครื่องออกกำลังกายกล้ามเนื้อหน้าท้องให้สามารถออกกำลังกายเฉพาะส่วนของกล้ามเนื้อ Upper Rectus Abdominisซึ่งจะมีการกำหนดมุมองศาสำหรับการออกกำลังกาย คือ 30 องศาในท่า Decline Crunch โดยทำการศึกษาในอาสาสมัครเพศชายจำนวน 30 คนผลการศึกษา : ผลการทดสอบประสิทธิภาพและประเมินความพึงพอใจต่อเครื่องออกกำลังกายกล้ามเนื้อหน้าท้องที่พัฒนาขึ้นพบว่า อยู่ในระดับดี(4.50 ± 0.00 และ 4.24 ± 0.68 ตามลำดับ)สรุป : เครื่องออกกำลังกายกล้ามเนื้อหน้าท้องที่พัฒนาขึ้นมีประสิทธิภาพในการออกกำลังกายกล้ามเนื้อหน้าท้อง และสามารถออกกำลังกายกล้ามเนื้อหน้าท้องเฉพาะส่วนได้.
