The Role Of Kisspeptin Signaling In Reproduction Of Ruminant, Thuchadaporn Chaikhun, Pongsiwa Sotthibandhu, Siriwat Suadsong

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

In the present decade, kisspeptin has been a fascinating topic in the reproductive spotlight. Kisspeptin is a neuropeptide, produced mainly in the hypothalamus from Kiss1 gene. This gene was initially discovered in 1996 as a tumor suppressor gene in human malignant melanoma. Then in the year 2003, researchers found that mutations of the G protein-coupled receptor (GPR54), which is the strongly cognate receptor of kisspeptin, were associated with hypogonadotropic hypogonadism in mice and humans. There are many kisspeptin distribution and function studies (both in vitro and in vivo) in mammals. In ruminants, kisspeptin has been studied mainly in sheep and …

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

Mutation of the G6S gene in Anglo-Nubian (AN) goat causes non-function of the N-acetylglucosamide 6- sulfatase enzyme within lysosomes, which increases heparin sulfate accumulation and induces pathogenesis of the internal organs. Transversion of base C to T at nucleotide 322 changes decoding of an amino arginine to a stop codon (R322X) and produces a truncated protein. This mutation is detrimental to the health of a goat kid leading to delay in nervous development and death. It was found first time in goats of a Michigan herd in the US, but has not yet been reported in Thailand. This study aimed …

Problem/background : Hookworm infection is one of the major neglected tropical infectious diseases causing both overt and cryptic morbidity among ~600 million people living in tropical areas. As conventional hookworm control measures by improving sanitation and mass anthelminthic drug administration are not sustainable, development of hookworm vaccines is mandatory. One of the major vaccine candidates is Ancylostoma secreted protein-2 of Necator americanus (Na-ASP-2). To date, only one Na-ASP-2 sequence is available; therefore, it remains unknown whether the effectiveness of a vaccine derived from this molecule may be compromised by antigenic diversity in hookworm population. Objectives : To determine the Na-ASP-2 …

Contrast Enhanced Magnetic Resonance Cholangiography (Ce-Mrc), P Ratasirayakorn, N. Tanpowpong

Chulalongkorn Medical Journal

Hepatocyte specific contrast agent has been developed to detect and characterize liver lesions by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). As this contrast agent is taken up into the functional hepatocyte and is excreted via the biliary system, it has potential to be an intrabiliary contrast agent. There has been increased diagnostic confidence when it is used in combination with conventional T2 magnetic resonance cholangiography (MRC) by giving both morphologic and functional informations of the biliary system. This article reviews clinical applications of contrast enhanced magnetic resonance cholangiography (CE-MRC) with two available hepatocyte specific contrast agents in Thailand, i.e. Gd-BOPTA and Gd-EOB-DTPA. …

Tobacco Endgame Strategies: Challenges In Ethics And Law, Bryan P. Thomas, Lawrence O. Gostin

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

There are complex legal and ethical tradeoffs involved in using intensified regulation to bring smoking prevalence to near-zero levels. The authors explore these tradeoffs through a lens of health justice, paying particular attention to the potential impact on vulnerable populations. The ethical tradeoffs explored include the charge that heavy regulation is paternalistic; the potentially regressive impact of heavily taxing a product consumed disproportionately by the poor; the simple loss of enjoyment to heavily addicted smokers; the health risks posed by, for example, regulating nicotine content in cigarettes—where doing so leads to increased consumption. Turning to legalistic concerns, the authors explore …
