Frontiers in Public Health Services and Systems Research

Introduction: This practice-based research study capitalized on the statewide implementation of a comprehensive, locally-driven initiative to implement evidence-based policy, system and environmental changes related to obesity and tobacco use. The study examined local health department (LHD) performance and factors such as organizational quality improvement (QI) maturity, structure and governance.

Methods: State health department staff reviewed grant reports and documentation pertaining to all LHD grantees, which collectively represented all 87 counties and 4 cities in Minnesota (MN), in order to designate grantees as either: “Exceeds Expectations,” “Meets Expectations” or “Approaching Expectations.” A study team of state, local and academic partners then …

Frontiers in Public Health Services and Systems Research

Using the data from the National Association of County and City Health Officials’ (NACCHO) 2010 Profile of Local Health Departments (LHDs) our study investigates whether or not infrastructural characteristics of LHDs were associated with completion of community health assessment (CHA). Our results show that local and shared LHD governance, greater share of revenue from federal and state sources, smaller population size in LHD jurisdiction, and having an epidemiologist significantly increased the odds of CHA completion in the past, after controlling for community characteristics and other independent variables. These findings have important implications for LHDs, PHAB and its partners.

The facility's newly developed M Model Nursing Professional Practice Model (MNPPM) which used the theoretical underpinning of Meehan's Careful nursing model (2003, 2012) was utilized as the nursing model. Successful navigation through the accreditation process developed by the Public Health Accreditation Board (PHAB) requires strong and effective leadership. Situational leadership, a contingency theory of leadership, frequently taught in the public health classroom, has utility for leading a public health agency through this process. Chlamydia are obligate intracellular bacteria and important pathogens of humans and animals. Chlamydia-related bacteria are also major fish pathogens, infecting epithelial cells of the gills and skin to cause the disease epitheliocystis. Given the wide distribution, ancient origins and spectacular diversity of bony fishes, this group offers a rich resource for the identification and isolation of novel Chlamydia. The broad-nosed pipefish (Syngnathus typhle) is a widely distributed and genetically diverse temperate fish species, susceptible to epitheliocystis across much of its range. This study adds to the ongoing work of creating a system capable of administering accurate speech recognition threshold (SRT) tests to non-native English speakers. The SRT test helps in determining the brain’s ability to hear and understand speech. Bedke-Slade (2006) developed a SRT word list comprised of 28 words in the Taiwan Mandarin language which she recorded onto a compact disc. This word list, however, was not re-tested to ensure its performance matched the outcome predicted by Bedke-Slade. That’s where I came in.

Introduction: Anterior shoulder instability (ASI), a common clinical problem, causes significant functional impairments. Despite little evidence to support its use, rehabilitation directed at the unstable glenohumeral joint often includes McConnell shoulder taping. This taping technique consists of a base layer of tape followed by application of a rigid strapping tape (corrective) to restrain excessive translation of the humeral head. I traveled to Amman, Jordan to evaluate the effectiveness of speech therapy as a volunteer service for children undergoing cleft palate surgery through Operation Smile. Other studies have determined that speech therapy is necessary in cleft palate rehabilitation. This study examined whether therapy is or can be effective in developing countries as a volunteer service. The effectiveness was determined based on pre-operative communication levels compared to post-therapy communication levels as well as parent satisfaction with therapy received. Further, the challenges facing speech therapists as volunteers was determined.

The authors conduct pre-treatment and post-treatment observations on students taking a first semester freshman course designed to enlighten them about their role in the world as global citizens. The authors use the Intercultural Effectiveness Scale to measure the students across the dimensions of Continuous Learning, Interpersonal Engagement and Hardiness. Results suggests that students undergoing such a course may increase their intercultural effectiveness, especially in the area of interpersonal engagement, as well as, global mindset.

The use of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) has steadily become more widespread. For the first time, the use of traditional healers was included in the definition of CAM on the 2007 NHIS. Several Hispanic-specific CAM studies have included a variety of traditional healing and folk CAM therapies. Despite efforts to categorize CAM therapies, a common shortfall of many Hispanic- specific studies is the inclusion of prayer as a CAM practice.
