Community-based participatory research (CBPR) is an investigative orientation that is gaining prominence in the fields of population and public health and among underserved community groups, such as traditional and indigenous peoples of the Americas. In this model, research questions are approached in a collaborative fashion with the community. The community of interest, not individual participants, is the research unit. Trained community members participate in the research process in an equitable fashion as full collaborators, not just as 'research participants'. Academic and other scientists, on the other hand, are not just 'objective investigators' but also active learners in this process. Cultural …

HIV is an infection affecting approximately 33 million people worldwide especially in Sub-Saharan Africa and Southeastern Asia. HIV infection is marked by the loss of CD4+ T-cells and is the causative agent of AIDS. Host genetic factors have been shown to influence the progression and outcome of HIV infection, but the genes identified thus far account for approximately 15% of the variance observed in viral load and progression, suggesting involvement of additional genes in HIV pathogenesis. FcyRIIa and FcyRIIIa genotypes have been shown to be influential in the transmission, control, and progression of HIV. These receptors contain polymorphisms that influence …

Introduction: The first-order toe-in angle of the maxillary first molar is an important aspect of orthodontics and occlusion. Many variables contribute to the amount of distal offset expressed such as bracket slot dimensions, the amount of toe in angle built into the prescription of the bracket, bracket placement, bracket deformation, and tooth morphology. Background: A significant increase in the myocardial abundance of Membrane-Type 1 Matrix Metalioproteinase (MT1-MMP) has been identified in patients suffering Dilated Cardiomyopathy (DCM). These increased levels likely contribute to DCM; however, the molecular basis for up-regulation of MT1-MMP in the context of DCM remains unknown. Of significant relevance, microRNAs fine-tune protein translation by interrupting ribonucleoprotein:mRNA complexes, inducing degradation, or more commonly, translational repression of the message. PWD may exhibit aversive feeding behaviors that are misinterpreted. This vital misinterpretation can lead to malnutrition in the PWD and increase the risk of mortality. Purpose: Various treatment options are available for small incidentally detected kidney masses, including surveillance, partial nephrectomy and probe ablative therapies. When partial nephrectomy is considered, the procedure can be safely approached laparoscopically, either pure or robot assisted, in experienced hands. Laparo-endoscopic single site (LESS) surgery is a novel approach for partial nephrectomies in well selected cases. In this video, we present our experience with the LESS retroperitoneal partial nephrectomy using the Gelpoint device.

The Echinococcus granulosus tapeworm causes hepatic echinococcosis. It is endemic in the Mediterranean region, Middle East, and South America. Human infection is secondary to accidental consumption of ova in feces. Absorption through the bowel wall and entrance into the portal circulation leads to liver infection. This case involves a 34 y/o Moroccan male with an echinococcal liver cyst. His chief complaint was RUQ pain. The patient was treated with albendazole and praziquantel. This review describes the biology, ecology, and epidemiology of known human pathogens in the family Anaplasmataceae that are transmitted by ticks and belong to the genus Anaplasma and genus Ehrlichia. We discuss the current status of diagnosis and surveillance of the diseases they cause, and address the challenges and new perspectives raised due to continuous recognition of new emerging human pathogens in the family Anaplasmataceae.

This article describes a student-led, community-participatory project focused on reducing the burden of childhood lead poisoning in rental housing. A multidisciplinary group of students and faculty worked with community members. We compiled the social, public health, economic, and policy information on the human and fiscal costs of childhood lead poisoning. This analysis was done for community advocates to use to persuade policymakers to enact a local law strengthening the prevention of childhood lead poisoning in rental property. Doxorubicin is an anticancer drug extensively used in anticancer therapy. Doxorubicin is highly hydrophilic, has short half-life, and its use is associated with severe side effects at high doses. Fatty acyl amide derivatives of doxorubicin were synthesized with the expectation to improve the lipophilicity and anticancer activity of the drug. The lipophilicity was enhanced with the increase in chain length of fatty acyl moiety. Conjugation of 4-amino group with fatty acids through an amide bond reduced the anticancer activity in leukemia, breast, ovarian, and colon cancer cell lines, suggesting that the presence of free amino group is required for anticancer …

Objective: In 2010, Columbus, Ohio experienced the largest outbreak of pertussis that it has had in the past 25 years. Similar outbreaks are occurring across the nation on an increasing basis. This descriptive study examines the 2010 outbreak and describes the demographics of the affected population. Comparison is made to previous and current pertussis incidence in Ohio and outbreaks elsewhere in the United States. Contributing factors to the increasing occurrence of pertussis outbreaks are discussed.

Objective: The intent of this study was to examine low income Head Start overweight and obese preschoolers, ages 3-5, in 8 western Ohio counties. Variables of interest included: obesity status, rural versus metropolitan location, home versus center-based Head Start, and access to physicians.

Methods: Data was collected retrospectively from the host Head Start site located in Piqua, Ohio. All Head Start enrolled preschoolers (N=1,181) ages 3 to 5 within the 8 western Ohio counties and 43 programs were studied. All children were considered of low income based on their acceptance into the Head Start program.

This research project reviews the evidence on the significance of infant and young child feeding to public health goals, analyzes US policy documents in relationship to the Global Strategy using the World Breastfeeding Trends Initiative (WBTi) to quantify the findings into a national score, and then summarizes the gaps and strengths in US policies and makes recommendations. Using the WBTi scoring system, strengths for the US exist in national policy, Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative, monitoring and evaluation, and complementary feeding. A second aim focuses on determining which asthma interventions, self-monitoring tools and asthma management programs have shown to be the most significant in improving outcomes in patients with asthma. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) funded a study aimed at ameliorating issues with visual flight rules (VFR) pilots flying into instrument weather conditions (IMC). Scenario-based simulation training (SBST) was developed to examine threat and error management (TEM) skills among private pilots. SBST was modeled after line-oriented flight training (LOFT), and new technologies were developed to improve weather simulation. This paper includes a Human Factors analysis of flight simulation development, and it details weather simulation improvements. Despite much attention, there continues to be a low level of female participation in the aviation industry. In an earlier qualitative study of female aviation students, it was found that having parents who were supportive of their daughter’s career choice was the most influential factor in student career decision making. As a follow up to this earlier study, a Likert-scale type survey was distributed electronically to both active female aviation professionals and to current female aviation students. The survey allowed for participant identification of the factors that were most influential for them both choosing and remaining in an aviation career. …
