Introduction:

Although studies are conflicting as to the benefit of intensive insulin therapy (IIT) in the critically ill, there is a 6x increase in hypoglycemia incidence in patients treated with IIT.

Anesthesia masks signs and symptoms of hypoglycemia, making intraop hypoglycemia difficult to detect clinically.

We performed this retrospective, observational analysis to:

Determine the incidence of intraoperative hypoglycemia and severe hypoglycemia

Evaluate possible causes of hypoglycemia

Determine intraop monitoring and treatment practices of diabetic patients at a large academic hospital

The objective of the proposed study is to develop new materials and methods to manage microbial growth in chronic wounds using phototherapy. Chronic wounds are considered as a worldwide health problem. The most common chronic wounds can be classified into three categories: venous ulcers, diabetic ulcers, and pressure ulcers. Venous ulcers, which usually occur in the legs, account for about 70% to 90% of chronic wounds and can become infected easily. A variety of Ruthenium complexes possessing terpyridine complexes as ligands in their coordination sphere have been investigated extensively as DNA photo nucleases in vitro. This work has led to the realization that compounds of Ruthenium bind to DNA purines and that the interactions are of an unprecedented bridging variety. Owing to the molar absorptivity of these complexes in the visible region, direct cleavage of duplex DNA by these complexes requires irradiation in the range of 400-500 nm.

One of the largest challenges that food manufactures are facing today is the management of food allergens. Allergenic protein in trace amounts, part per million concentrations, will trigger a reaction in some individuals. Food manufacturers need to prevent allergen cross-contamination by performing adequate sanitation after production of an allergenic containing food. Allergen detection kits are used to determine if sufficient protein was removed from the equipment surfaces during sanitation. One kit on the market is the 3M™ Clean- Trace™ Surface Protein (Allergen) swab tests. The test qualitatively detects the presence of protein based on the biuret reaction and will yield …

Recent clinical studies have shown the importance of folate receptor in drug delivery system as they increase the potency and reduce toxicity of many cancer therapies. The folate receptor alpha ( FR-a) binds with high affinity for folic acid and serves for receptor mediated transport of folate into cells. Folate is necessary for DNA metabolism and thus it is speculated that rapidly dividing cancer cells have an increased requirement for folic acid. Public Health Insurance Utilization In New York City, 2008, Rachael Varra

Introduction: This study examines demographic and socioeconomic factors of racial/ethnic groups in New York City between as of 2008 – particularly the utilization of public health insurance (PHI) benefits.

Methods: Data on Latinos and other racial/ethnic groups were obtained from the U.S. Census Bureau American Community Survey, reorganized for public use by the Minnesota Population Center, University of Minnesota, IPUMSusa. Cases in the dataset were weighted and analyzed to produce population estimates.

Results: Of the 25% of New Yorkers receiving PHI in 2008, the absolute number of whites, blacks and Latinos receiving PHI was similar. However, greater proportions of Latinos …

A 68-year-old male, presented with exertional dyspnoea and chest pain in his anterior chest wall for 3 months. He had no previous history of cardiac disease. Clinical examination failed to show anything significant. Chest X-ray showed a mass superimposed over the upper cardiac silhouette. He was further evaluated by chest CT, which showed a cystic mass in the anterior mediastinum measuring 9 x 7 cm in its maximum diameter. On surgical excision and histopathological examination, findings were consistent with benign pleuropericardial cyst, confirming the earlier diagnosis.

This article reviews the importance of regional initiatives in the context of global efforts to achieve the Millennium Development Goal 4 and 5 and describes the action-oriented multi-country healthcare professional association (HCPA) workshops organized by the Partnership for Maternal, Newborn and Child Health. The South Asian HCPA workshop served as a catalyst for strengthening the ability of HCPAs in South Asian countries to organize and coordinate their activities effectively, play a larger role in national planning, and collaborate with other key stakeholders in maternal, newborn and child health.

The purpose of the study is (1) to describe the selection process of an international clinical guideline (CGL) for patients with low back pain (LBP) for adoption and implementation at the Physical Therapy Department at the American University of Beirut Medical Center (AUBMC), and (2) to evaluate the physiotherapists’ compliance. Method. International guidelines were identified through a literature search and compared according to the AGREE instrument for selection. Quality indicators were selected. Purposes: This pilot study (1) assessed physical therapist students’ attitudes toward using YouTube to share health-related videos on the Internet, and (2) determined whether a cohort of physical therapist students would use YouTube, or similar technologies, to share educational information with other health care providers and health care consumers once they enter practice. Methods: A cohort of 28-second-year Doctor of Physical Therapy students completed a project to produce and share educational videos on YouTube. Injuries And The Quality Of Life Of Collegiate Athletes: A Pilot Study, Anna Ford, Daniel Panchik

Purpose: To explore the relationship between injury severity and athletes’ quality of life, as well as the role of cognitive appraisal during participation restrictions. Method: A descriptive quantitative survey research design was used. Ten NCAA Division III athletes completed two self-report instruments: the SF-12v2TM Health Survey and a scale that ranked injury severity based on time-loss from sport. Results: Data analysis yielded three main findings: (a) mean mental health scores were lower than mean physical health scores in all injury severity categories; (b) three participants had higher mental than physical health scores; and (c) only four scores were beyond the …

To explore the extent of practices of formative assessment in health science education, a self-report questionnaire was administered to faculty members of nursing and allied health sciences of a south India university. Simple percentages were computed to explore the extent of practice of formative assessment and the ways in which it is currently used to help students learn in nursing and allied health science courses. The study revealed that there is room for improvement in the way formative assessment is practiced currently in health science education.

The initiation of the immune response at the cellular level relies on specific recognition molecules to rapidly signal viral infection via interferon (IFN) regulatory factor 3 (IRF-3)-dependent pathways. The absence of IRF-3 would be expected to render such pathways inoperative and thereby significantly affect viral infection. Unexpectedly, a previous study found no significant change in herpes simplex virus (HSV) pathogenesis in IRF-3^−/− mice following intravenous HSV type 1 (HSV-1) challenge (K. Honda, H. Yanai, H. This paper explores the many of the alternative and naturopathic options available for pregnancy, labor and delivery, and postpartum care and the advantages this type of care presents. PURPOSE: High symptom burden and hospital mortality among patients with lung cancer argues for early palliative care intervention. Patient characteristics and discharge dispositions in hospitalized patients with lung cancer receiving usual care were compared to those referred to a new palliative care service.

METHODS: A retrospective database review of all lung cancer discharges receiving usual care (UC) and palliative care service (PCS) consultation was conducted. Demographics, length of stay, discharge disposition, and mortality were described and compared. Palliative Performance Scale scores were described according to discharge disposition in the PCS group. In spring 2010, the staff of Himmelfarb Health Sciences Library met to discuss ideas for a mobile web page and review ways to reach out to users in the mobile environment. By fall 2010, the library launched a mobile website and LibGuide, including drop-in help sessions provided for students. This poster presentation is an overview of the mobile support that the library currently provides to users.
