Tumors comprising the spectrum of hemangiopericytoma/ malignant solitary fibrous tumor (HPC/SFT) are thought to arise from fibroblasts and represent a small subset of soft tissue sarcomas. Surgery is typically the treatment of choice for localized disease, with reported 10-year overall survival rates of 54-89% after complete surgical resection. However, for the approximately 20% of HPC/SFT patients who eventually develop local recurrences and/or distant metastases, options for effective treatment are limited and are poorly defined. The antimicrobial activities of organic releasing chlorine disinfectant (Virusnip™) was evaluated and compared by semi-quantitative suspension-neutralization method under clean condition in vitro. The test organisms were clinical bacterial isolates of hemolytic Escherichia coli, Salmonella Typhimurium, Salmonella Enteritidis, Salmonella Hadar, Salmonella Infantis, and Salmonella Virchow. Fungal isolates were Candida albicans and Trichophyton mentagophytes. Four sets of Virusnip™ concentrations were prepared at 1:100, 1:200, 1:400 and 1:1000 for bacteria and 3 sets of 1:100, 1:200 and 1:400 for fungi. In order to develop the most practical plastination specimens used for anatomical study, the aim of the present study was to compare between using acetone and absolute alcohol for dehydration in plastination procedure. Ten pig heart specimens were used in the present study and plastination procedure was processed by using acetone (group 1) or absolute alcohol (group 2) for dehydration. The results showed that dehydration by acetone resulted in more natural color with no shrinkage of the heart specimens while dehydration by alcohol caused darker color and more shrinkage. Background: Bacterial vaginosis (BV) has been most consistently linked to sexual behaviour, and the epidemiological profile of BV mirrors that of established sexually transmitted infections (STIs). It remains a matter of debate however whether BV pathogenesis does actually involve sexual transmission of pathogenic microorganisms from men to women. We therefore made a critical appraisal of the literature on BV in relation to sexual behaviour.

Discussion: G. vaginalis carriage and BV occurs rarely with children, but has been observed among adolescent, even sexually non-experienced girls, contradicting that sexual transmission is a necessary prerequisite to disease acquisition. G. vaginalis carriage is enhanced …

OBJECTIVE: To explore the association between Self Monitoring of Blood Glucose (SMBG) levels and improved glycemic control (HbA1c level) among type 2 diabetic patients, receiving oral hypoglycaemic agents and insulin, and to ascertain the factors influencing SMBG.

METHOD: Using Comparative cross sectional study design five hundred Type 2 diabetes patients through convenient sampling between 30-70 years were interviewed through a structured questionnaire in year 2006 and 2007 at AKUH Ambulatory setting. These 500 subjects were divided as 250 in case (doing SMBG) and 250 in control (not doing SMBG) groups.

Sports physical therapists utilize a variety of exercise equipment to help an athlete restore function after an injury. An injured athlete’s therapeutic exercise program frequently includes the prescription of functional strengthening and power exercises during the later stages of rehabilitation. Salbutamol residues in swine tissues and fluids were investigated. Tissue, serum and urine samples were collected from 33 pigs after 14 days of oral administration of 3 ppm salbutamol. The concentrations of salbutamol were determined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay and further confirmed by capillary electrophoresis. The highest urinary concentration of salbutamol was 145.12 ng/ml at 18 hour and remained detectable for 30 days after the last feeding. Salbutamol was undetectable in serum samples. The highest concentrations of salbutamol in liver, kidney, lung, heart, brain and muscle were 70.42 ng/g, 31.88 ng/g, 26.06 ng/g, 6.76 ng/g, 3.41 ng/g and 2.97 ng/g, …

Forced impregnation process is normally performed under vacuum at freezing temperature which requires expensive plastination apparatus. To reduce the cost in the plastination process, forced impregnation of porcine hearts under two different environments, which are at the freezing temperature (-20oC) and at room temperature (22-25oC), was compared. Twelve porcine hearts were collected from a slaughter house, and divided into the groups, six in each, and subjected to be plastinated by S10 standard technique at the two temperatures. The present study used cardiac magnetic resonance imaging to investigate the relations between secondary ventricular size and global cardiac performance. The Fontan cross-sectional study collected data from 7 centers participating in the Pediatric Heart Network. The purposes of this study were to describe variability of pacing during a marathon and to determine if there is a relationship between variability of pacing and marathon performance. A total of 301 race profiles that contained personal global positioning system (GPS) from the Rock „n‟ Roll Las Vegas (Race 1) and San Diego (Race 2) marathons were downloaded (http://connect.garmin.com) and analyzed. Anaplasma phagocytophilum is an obligatory intracellular bacterium that infects neutrophils to cause human granulocytic anaplasmosis. Sialyl Lewis x (sLex)-modified P-selectin glycoprotein ligand-1 (PSGL-1) is the confirmed receptor utilized by A. phagocytophilum to bind and invade human neutrophils and myeloid cell lines. As an obligate intracellular pathogen, the binding of A. phagocytophilum to a host cell receptor is a prerequisite step for entry and replication, and thus its survival.
