Aim: Induction of hepatic stellate cell (HSC) apoptosis is a viable therapeutic strategy to reduce liver fibrogenesis. Although BH3-only proteins of the Bcl-2 family trigger pro-apoptotic pathways, the BH3-only proteins mediating HSC apoptosis have not been well defined. Our aim, using proteasome inhibition as a model to induce HSC apoptosis, was to examine the BH3-only proteins contributing to cell death of this key liver cell subtype. Methods: Apoptosis was induced by treating LX-2 cells, an immortalized human hepatic stellate cell line, and primary rat stellate cells with the proteasome inhibitor MG-132. Although tumor size and lymph node involvement are the current cornerstones of breast cancer prognosis, they have not been extensively explored in relation to tumor methylation attributes in conjunction with other tumor and patient dietary and hormonal characteristics. Using primary breast tumors from 162 (AJCC stage I-IV) women from the Kaiser Division of Research Pathways Study and the Illumina GoldenGate methylation bead-array platform, we measured 1,413 autosomal CpG loci associated with 773 cancer-related genes and validated select CpG loci with Sequenom EpiTYPER. Tumor grade, size, estrogen and progesterone receptor status, and triple negative status were significantly (Q-values <0.05) associated with altered methylation of 209, 74, 183, 69, and 130 loci, respectively. Unsupervised clustering, using a recursively partitioned mixture model (RPMM), of all autosomal CpG loci revealed eight distinct methylation classes. Methylation class membership was significantly associated with patient race (P<0.02) and tumor size (P<0.001) in univariate tests. Using multinomial logistic regression to adjust for potential confounders, patient age and tumor size, as well as known disease risk factors of alcohol intake and total dietary folate, were all significantly (P<0.0001) associated with methylation class membership. Breast cancer prognostic characteristics and risk-related exposures appear to be associated with gene-specific tumor methylation, as well as overall methylation patterns.

Increased white matter mean diffusivity and decreased fractional anisotropy (FA) has been observed in subjects diagnosed with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and Alzheimer's disease (AD). We sought to determine whether similar alterations of white matter occur in normal individuals at risk of AD. Diffusion tensor images were acquired in 42 cognitively normal right-handed women with both a family history of dementia and at least one apolipoprotein E4 allele. A prostate cancer committee was established to modify the NCCN Clinical Practice Guidelines in Oncology (NCCN Guidelines) on Prostate Cancer for adaptation and implementation in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region. The objective was to enhance the multidisciplinary approach to the treatment of prostate cancer. The committee, comprising regional experts in the fields of urologic, medical, and radiation oncology, reviewed the 2009 version of the NCCN Guidelines on Prostate Cancer and suggested modifications based on the unique needs of the regions determined through published evidence and local expertise. Design: Surveys were developed based on FightBac!™ concepts and the Health Belief Model (HBM) construct.

Participants: The majority of participants (n= 503) were females (67%), Caucasians (80%), aged between 30 to 49 years old (83%), had one or two children (83%), prepared meals all or most of the time (76%) and consumed meals away from home three times or less per week (66%).

Holocarboxylase synthetase (HCS) catalyzes the binding of biotin to lysine (K) residues in histones H3 and H4. Histone biotinylation marks play important roles in the repression of genes and retrotransposons. Preliminary studies suggested that K16 in histone H4 is a target for biotinylation by HCS. Here we demonstrated that H4K16bio is overrepresented in repeat regions {pericentromeric alpha satellite repeats; long terminal repeats (LTR)} compared with euchromatin promoters. H4K16bio was also enriched in the repressed interleukin-2 gene promoter. Idiopathic granulomatous mastitis is an uncommon benign breast disease diagnosed from exclusion. It mimics malignant breast tumor in terms of clinical and imaging features. We hereby report a case of painful lump in the left breast. Mammograms and ultrasound findings could not exclude malignant mass. Wide excision was performed and the final histopathological diagnosis of granulomatous mastitis was concluded. In conclusion, the clinical and imaging findings of granulomatous mastitis are similar to carcinoma. Tissue diagnosis was very important to distinguish these two entities before starting management and avoiding unnecessary mastectomy.

วัตถุประสงค์ : เพื่อศึกษาภาวะซึมเศร้าและพฤติกรรมการเล่นเกมออนไลน์ของนักเรียนมัธยมศึกษาตอนปลายในเขตกรุงเทพมหานครรูปแบบการวิจัย : การวิจัยเชิงพรรณนา ณ จุดเวลาใดเวลาหนึ่งกลุ่มตัวอย่าง : นักเรียนชั้นมัธยมศึกษาตอนปลาย ในสังกัดสำนักงานการศึกษาขั้นพื้นฐานกระทรวงศึกษาธิการในเขตกรุงเทพมหานครวิธีการศึกษา : นักเรียนชั้นมัธยมศึกษาตอนปลายปีการศึกษา 2552 โดยใช้แบบสอบถามข้อมูลส่วนบุคคล แบบทดสอบการติดเกมสำหรับเด็กและวัยรุ่น และแบบสอบถามเกี่ยวกับความรู้สึก CES-D วิเคราะห์ข้อมูลโดยโปรแกรม SPSS สถิตที่ใช้ได้แก่ ค่าร้อยละ ค่าเฉลี่ย ส่วนเบี่ยงเบนมาตรฐาน และวิเคราะห์ความแปรปรวนทางเดียวผลการศึกษา : นักเรียนชั้นมัธยมศึกษาปีที่ 4 จำนวน 257 คน (ร้อยละ 33.3) นักเรียนชั้นมัธยมศึกษาปีที่ 5 จำนวน 255 คน (ร้อยละ 33.1) นักเรียนขั้นมัธยมศึกษาปีที่ 6จำนวน 259 คน (ร้อยละ 33.6) ซึ่งเป็นเพศชายจำนวน 396 คน (ร้อยละ 51.4)และเพศหญิง จำนวน 375 คน (ร้อยละ 48.6) จากการวิจัยพบว่ากลุ่มไม่มีปัญหาใน การเล่นเกม ร้อยละ 86.5 คลั่งไคล้ เริ่มเกิดปัญหาในการเล่นเกม ร้อยละ 9.9กลุ่มติดเกม มีปัญหาในการเล่นเกมมาก ร้อยละ 3.6 ส่วนด้านความรู้สึกพบว่ากลุ่มที่ไม่อยู่ในข่ายภาวะซึมเศร้า ร้อยละ 67.7 ส่วนกลุ่มที่อยู่ในข่ายภาวะซึมเศร้า32.2 และปัจจัยที่เกี่ยวข้องพบว่ามีปัจจัยที่มีผลต่อพฤติกรรมการเล่นเกม ได้แก่เพศชาย ระดับการศึกษาชั้นมัธยมศึกษาปีที่ 5 เกรดเฉลี่ยต่ำ รายได้ส่วนตัวต่ำและสูง จำนวนเพื่อนสนิทเพศเดียวกันน้อย และปัจจัยทางจิตสังคม มีภาวะซึมเศร้า ร้อยละ 32.3สรุปผล : นักเรียนมัธยมศึกษาตอนปลายในโรงเรียนที่ทำวิจัย ส่วนใหญ่ยังไม่มีปัญหาในการเล่นเกม แต่ก็พบว่าปัจจัยที่เกี่ยวข้อกับพฤติกรรมการเล่นเกม ซึ่งควรที่จะได้รับการประเมินและติดตามต่อไปในกลุ่มที่มีปัญหาพฤติกรรมการเล่นเกมและมีภาวะซึมเศร้าร่วมอยู่ด้วย รวมทั้งวางแนวทางความร่วมมือทั้งโรงเรียนและผู้ปกครอง เพื่อที่จะช่วยให้เด็กลดพฤติกรรมการเล่นเกมลงและปฏิกิริยาทางอารมณ์ที่เกิดขึ้น.

Introduction

The objective was to determine the effects of growth factor treatment on dental pulp cell sensitivity to toxicity of 2 composite restoration materials, Flow Line and Durafill VS, and a calcium hydroxide pulp capping material, Dycal.

Methods

Toxicity of the dental materials to cultures of primary dental pulp cells was determined by the MTT metabolism assay. The ability of 6 different growth factors to influence the toxicity was tested.

Results

A 24-hour exposure to either Flow Line or Durafill VS caused approximately 40% cell death, whereas Dycal exposure caused approximately 80% cell death. The toxicity of Flow Line and …

The mechanisms that induce Alzheimer’s disease (AD) are largely unknown thereby deterring the development of disease-modifying therapies. One working hypothesis of AD is that Aβ excess disrupts membranes causing pore formation leading to alterations in ionic homeostasis. However, it is largely unknown if this also occurs in native brain neuronal membranes. Here we show that similar to other pore forming toxins, Aβ induces perforation of neuronal membranes causing an increase in membrane conductance, intracellular calcium and ethidium bromide influx. This study investigated the role of noradrenergic systems in the reinstatement of extinguished cocaine-induced conditioned place preference by cocaine and stress in male C57BL/6 mice. Nipple adenoma is a benign condition simulating malignancy such as breast carcinoma and/or Paget’s disease clinically. In this study 19 cases diagnosed as nipple adenoma over a period of 14 years are described. The diagnosis was confirmed by histology alone. All patients were females with age ranging from 23 to 63 years. Most of the cases presented clinically with in duration and ulceration accompanied by pain and itching. The glycogen synthase kinase-3 (GSK-3) family of serine/threonine kinases consists of 2 highly related isoforms, alpha and beta. Although GSK-3beta has an important role in cardiac development, much remains unknown about the function of either GSK-3 isoform in the postnatal heart. Herein, we present what we believe to be the first studies defining the role of GSK-3alpha in the mouse heart using gene targeting. Gsk3a(-/-) mice over 2 months of age developed progressive cardiomyocyte and cardiac hypertrophy and contractile dysfunction. Dermatology probably has the largest vocabulary of any of the medical specialties,¹ a statement to which we can attest when we reviewed aspects of the Dermatology Lexicon project. Some terms are derived from the Latin or Greek and present spelling problems to all but a select few. Examples include acrokeratosis verruciformis and pterigium. Other diseases carry names that are such a mouthful that few can call them out without the interruption of breathing. These might include erosio interdigitalis blastomycetica and dermatitis exudative discoid and lichenoid of Sulzberger and Garbe. No wonder the former is now referred to simply as …

Ascaris lumbricoides (giant roundworm) and Trichuris trichiura (whipworm) are the most common intestinal parasites found in humans worldwide today and they almost always co-occur. However, we find two distinct patterns in archae­ological material. In historical North American and Old World contexts, the association of A. lumbricoides and T. trich­iura is similar to the modern epidemiological picture. In contrast, the co-occurrence of A. lumbricoides and T. trichiura eggs in prehistoric South America is rare. For many years the association of headache with CSA has been postulated and results have been similar across studies indicating a robust connection. Chronic headache is one of the most common causes of visits to physicians and contributes to decreased quality of life for those who suffer with them. Although CSA is detrimental to both men and women, evidence supports that women are more likely to suffer from chronic somatic headache pain than men. PURPOSE. Adolescents receive less primary care than other age groups. One reason may be the negative ways that providers sometimes interact with adolescents. The purpose was to develop knowledge regarding adolescents' preferences for provider interactions.

DESIGN AND METHODS. Design was descriptive and mixed method. Donabedian's healthcare quality model guided the study. Data were collected via focus groups and a survey.

RESULTS. Twenty-four adolescents participated. Four themes described their preferences: forming a relationship, supporting independence, assuring confidentiality, and conveying caring.

PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS. Care that is congruent with adolescents' preferences may improve quality of, and access to, care and, ultimately, …
