Arsenic exposure is a significant worldwide environmental health concern. We recently reported that 5-week exposure to environmentally relevant levels (10 and 100 ppb) of As in drinking water significantly altered components of the innate immune response in mouse lung, which we hypothesize is an important contributor to the increased risk of lung disease in exposed human populations.

Objectives:

We investigated the effects of As exposure on respiratory influenza A (H1N1) virus infection, a common and potentially fatal disease.

Purpose: To determine overall response rate (ORR), time to progression (TTP), and duration of response (DOR) with twice-weekly/weekly bortezomib plus rituximab, and evaluate safety/tolerability, in patients with relapsed or refractory CD20+ follicular lymphoma (FL) or marginal-zone lymphoma.

In order to maintain homeostasis of the ovary, proliferation and apoptosis occur simultaneously in different ovarian cell types. It was shown that steroid hormone which changed during the oestrous cycle, may regulate these mechanisms in normal mammal ovarian tissues. Secondary bronchiolitis obliterans-organizing pneumonia (BOOP) is a reaction to injury, forming granulation tissue with airspaces. Idiopathic cryptogenic organizing pneumonia (COP) and secondary BOOP are histologically similar. COP has been reported to show increased collagen in the granulation plugs and fewer myofibroblasts and capillaries. Using CD34 for capillaries and alpha-smooth muscle actin for myofibroblasts, we assessed these statins to differentiate COP from secondary BOOP.

Research on an innate immune system of penaeid shrimp is greatly motivated by economical requirements, because their culture is limited by the development of infectious diseases. As invertebrates, shrimp’s natural immunity acts as a fast and efficient defence mechanism against the pathogens. Their immune system involve hemocytes (for encapsulation, nodule formation and phagocytosis), several plasma components (antimicrobial peptides, histones, lysosomal enzymes, lipopolysaccharide, β-1,3-glucan binding proteins, and recognition molecules), and multimeric systems (clotting protein cascade, prophenoloxidase system). Mastitis is a most frequent and costly disease of dairy cattle worldwide. All three contagious mastitis pathogens, Mycoplasma bovis, Streptococcus agalactiae and Staphylococcus aureus were investigated in 55 bulk tank milk samples from dairy cattle herds in Khon Kaen Province Thailand, by nested PCR and/or conventional bacterial culture. Bulk milk somatic cell count (BMSCC) was used as indicator for mastitis problem; i.e. > 5x105 somatic cells/ml of milk. The prevalence of Mycoplasma bovis, Streptococcus agalactiae and Staphylococcus aureus were 1.8%, 21.8% and 7.3%, respectively. Results from BMSCC indicated mastitis problem in 47 herds. Pleomorphic carcinomas are primary malignant tumours that are known to arise in the lungs, pancreas, gall bladder and intestine. A patient with polypoid tumour of the esophagus is described in this report. The patient presented with dysphagia. Diagnostic and therapeutic intervention required endoscopic evaluation and treatment. Benign esophageal tumours are rarely seen and originate from the upper third of esophagus. We observed an esophageal tumour which was interpreted as spindle cell carcinoma of the esophagus that caused obstruction. We present the clinical picture and histopathological findings of the tumour. To our knowledge this is the first local report of spindle …

The aim of this study was to examine the acoustic and spectral patterns of stop articulation in the speech of pre-pubescent children. A set of voiceless stop consonants, /ptk/, produced by a group of adults and typically developing children 3-5 years of age were examined in terms of multiple acoustic and spectral parameters. Findings indicated that, with the exception of spectral kurtosis, the acoustic and spectral characteristics of the stop productions varied significantly as a function of place of articulation and vowel context. Currently, health workers including residents and fellows do not have a suitable phantom model to practice the fine- needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB) procedure. In the past, we standardized a model consisting of latex glove containing fresh cattle liver for practicing FNAB. However, this model is difficult to organize and prepare on short notice, with the procurement of fresh cattle liver being the most challenging aspect. Handling of liver with contamination-related problems is also a significant draw back. In addition, the glove material leaks after a few needle passes, with resulting mess.

Introduction: Functional appliances are intended to correct by incremental advancement of the mandible for correction of skeletal Class 11 relationships. Similar in design to functional appliances, mandibular advancing devices (MAD) are used for obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) patients as they increase the size of the airway by drawing the tongue and soft palate forwards, and thus maintain its patency during sleep. Despite the increase in children born prenatally exposed to methamphetamine, little is known about the cognitive and neuropsychological outcomes of these children. Research specific to prenatal-methamphetamine exposure is extremely limited and has been primarily restricted to rat studies. Introduction: Cephalometric analysis is a cornerstone of orthodontic diagnosis, yet much information is lost when 3-dimensional structures are assessed with 2-dimensional methods. CBCT offers 3-dimensional imaging but at the cost of higher levels of ionizing radiation. Magnetic resonance imaging provides 3-dimensional imaging without ionizing radiation and additionally imparts visualization of soft tissue structures. Prior to employing MR images for cephalometric analysis, reliability of landmark identification must be assessed. The goal of this study was to identify the correlation between milk yield and milk malondialdehyde (MDA), an oxidative stress marker. The study was conducted using cows from eight small-holder dairy farms during October to December 2004. The data comprised of sample date, milk yield, and the recent calving date were recorded. Morning milk samples were collected monthly for the measurement of somatic cell counts (SCC) and MDA level using the automate counter and the modified Smith’s method, respectively. The efficacy of microsatellite markers was evaluated in order to use in parentage control in swine. Genomic DNA from 80 samples were extracted, and amplified using 16 microsatellite markers (D00768, KVL9000, NLRIP0001, S0663, S0710, S0719, S0766, SJ859, SJ923, SJ924, SJ925, SJ926, SJ927, SJ929, X53085 and X63893) in each single polymerase chain reaction (PCR). The PCR products were analyzed using agarose and polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (PAGE). The result showed that 15 microsatellite loci could be amplified except SJ925. Seven suitable microsatellite markers were selected for parentage control, including D00768, KVL9000, NLRIP0001, S0663, S0710, S0719, and S0766. Allelic numbers of the selected …

Chicken embryonic eggs and Madin-Darby canine kidney (MDCK) cell line were used for comparing the propagation of avian influenza A (H5N1) virus (C2105Dx1, a Thai isolate). The growth of the H5N1 virus was determined by using HA test and 50% infectivity dose to assess the suitability of the systems supporting the propagation of the virus. The results indicated that the Thai H5N1 virus was propagated better in the chicken embryonic eggs, which should be considered as a system of choice for the avian H5N1 virus isolation. Samples were submitted from 30 mixed Thai native chicken flocks, 15 birds per flock, aged between 1-4.5 months in the area of Nakornpathom province in the September 2005-October 2006 period. There is increasing evidence of Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) resistance to the classical triple therapy consisting of a proton-pump inhibitor and clarithromycin with either amoxicillin or metronidazole.
