In the study evaluated was the persistence of maternal antibodies levels Classical Swine Fever Against the virus (CSFV) in Vaccinated piglets born from sows from two farms (A and B) With different strategies against CSFV vaccination. In farm A sows were vaccinated at 90 days of gestation and in farm B at 18 - 21 days postpartum. While cytomegalovirus (CMV) infects and replicates in a multitude of cell types, the ability of the virus to replicate in antigen presenting cells (APCs) is believed to play a critical role in the viral dissemination and latency. CMV infection of APCs and manipulation of their function is an important area of investigation. CMV down regulation of MHC II is reportedly mediated by the HCMV proteins US2, US3, UL83, UL111a (vIL10) or through the induction of cellular IL10. Spanish phonological development was examined in six sequential bilingual children at the point of contact with English and eight months later. We explored effects of the English vowel and consonant inventory on Spanish. Children showed a significant increase in consonant cluster accuracy and in vowel errors. These emerging sequential bilingual children showed effects of English on their first language, Spanish. Cross-linguistic transfer did not affect all properties of the phonology equally. Negative transfer may occur in specific areas where the second language is more complex, requiring reorganization of the existing system, as in the transition from the Spanish five-vowel to …

All sexually active youth, whether obese or normal weight, should be offered counseling regarding contraception and appropriate contraceptive methods. However, obese youth who are sexually active may be less likely than their normal weight peers to use contraceptives correctly. Methods of contraception for obese adolescents are reviewed in this discussion. Combined oral contraceptives (COCs) and the contraceptive patch have higher failure rates in obese versus normal weight females, though failure rates are lower than noted with barrier contraceptives. The risk for venous thrombosis is higher in obese youth on COCs. Progestin-only pills and the levonorgestrel intrauterine system appear to be …

The prevalence of psychiatric symptoms in next-of-kin (NOK) of intensive care unit (ICU) patients has been reported at higher than 70% when screening is performed using the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS). The primary purpose of this study was to assess the ability of the HADS to predict psychiatric illness, diagnosed with the aide of a validated tool, the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV (SCID). In addition, we asked NOK to rate aspects of the ICU experience to determine possible associations with psychiatric diagnosis. The aim of this study was to assess embolic agent equivalency in uterine artery embolization (UAE) using post-procedure MRI enhancement of uterine fibroids in patients embolized using Embosphere Microspheres, (EM) Contour SE spheres (CSE), Poly-Vinyl Alcohol particles (PVA) and Bead Block spheres (BB). A total of 84 women with 6-month MRI follow-up constituted this retrospective study. Within this group, 25 women were treated with PVA, 23 were treated with CSE, 19 were treated with EM and 17 were treated with BB. Purpose: This study examines the utility of implementing the mini-CEX at a student-run primary care clinic. The mini-CEX is a validated tool for clinical skills feedback and evaluation. The implementation of the mini-CEX sought to improve quality standards in providers clinical skills, and therefore to set a model for continuous quality improvement in medical education. The present study employed lower body negative pressure (LBNP), a rapidly titratable, safe and reversible means of inducing simulated hypovolemia, for a comparison of transcranial Doppler (TCD) ultrasound of the middle cerebral artery and laser Doppler (LD) flowmetry of the forehead microvasculature. With IRB approval, 9 healthy volunteers (26.3±2.7 years) were monitored continuously with EKG, noninvasive finger arterial blood pressure (BP), and TCD positioned at the transtemporal window. The purpose of this paper is to describe an educational model used in a physical therapist education program to improve students’ confidence in clinical decision-making. Methods: The faculty chose topics for each forum and invited specific clinicians to present actual clinical cases to students in small group settings. Purpose: To determine wheather ot not the nutritional supplement PreRace containing L-Taurine, Citrulline Malate, Quercetin, DiMethyl Amino Ethanol, Caffeine, Metabromine, Catechin, and Malic acid will improve performance in an indoor 40 Kilometer cycling time trial.
Methods: Seven male cyclists ages 21-58 participated in a placebo-controlled investigation which consisted of two trials in which they consumed either the supplement PreRace or aloe vera juice. A resistance training program, where the exercise was uninterrupted (UT, i.e. continuous repetitions) was compared against another resistance training program where the exercise was interrupted (IT, i.e. 2 exercise sessions during a training day) for enhancing bone modeling and bone mineral density (BMD) in maturating animals. The total volume of work performed between the two resistance training programs was equivalent by design. This study presents the data from a morphologic deformation diagnosis of a speckled ray (Raja polystigma Regan, 1923) individual which was sampled from İzmir Bay. Deformation was located on the head part of the specimen and no deformation was observed in other body regions.

The present study examined the mammary glands and supramammary lymph nodes of cows with a history of abortion due to Brucella abortus, and presents the histopathological, immunohistochemical, and bacteriological results. The study included 11 Brucella-seropositive cows that aborted during their first gestation. Histopathologically, the mammary glands showed lymphoplasmacytic and histiocytic interstitial mastitis. The lymph nodes had lymphofollicular hyperplasia and medullary plasmacytosis. Immunohistochemistry results showed brucellar antigens, predominantly in the cytoplasm of macrophages, and neutrophils in the intralobular interstitium and periductal stroma in the udders of 3 cows. Desquamated alveolar epithelium also indicated intense immunopositivity. In the lymph nodes, macrophages containing …
