Canine amniotic membrane (AM) transplantation in conjunction with a third eyelid flap was used to promote healing of created deep corneal ulcers in 6 normal mongrel dogs. The healing was compared with the healing of created ulcers in the other eye of the same dog that were treated only with the third eyelid flap. A minimum of 60 days interval was allowed between the two treatment procedures in the 2 eyes of each dog. Field trial of a Chimeric porcine circovirus type 2 (PCV2) (Suvaxyn PCV2®, Fort Dodge Animal Health, USA) vaccine was performed in order to investigate the efficacy on decreasing pathological lesions and PCV2 viremia in a PCV2-affected swine herd in Thailand. A herd was selected based on history and serological data. Three-week-old pigs (n = 200) were equally divided into two groups. At 4 weeks old, the pigs (n = 100) were injected intramuscularly with 2 ml of Suvaxyn PCV2® vaccine and the non-vaccinated pigs were injected with 2 ml of normal saline. The aims of this study were to investigate the meiotic competence of immature porcine oocytes following open pulled straw (OPS) vitrification and warming and also to test the efficiency of the pretreatment of immature oocytes with CB prior to OPS vitrification. Experiment 1, cumulus oocyte complexes (COCs) were randomly assigned to OPS vitrification, cryoprotectant (CPA) toxicity test and non-CPA/non-vitrified controls. Tissue reaction to a 316L stainless T plate fabricated for pelvic osteotomy was examined radiographically and histologically in 3 experimental mongrel dogs 52 weeks after plate implantation on the non-osteotomized ilium. The adverse effects of long-term plate implantation were assessed clinically and radiographically in 7 dysplatic hips of 5 dogs that had undergone triple pelvic osteotomy 3-5 years earlier. Background: Morbidity associated with primary headache disorders is a major public health problem with an overall prevalence of 46%. Objective: To evaluate the clinical characteristics, risk factors, management and outcome of major pulmonary embolism (PE) in a tertiary care center of Karachi.
Methods: Medical records of all patients who underwent a spiral CT scan of the chest for suspected pulmonary embolism were reviewed between January 2000 and June 2007 at the Aga Khan University Hospital, Karachi. Patients having evidence of major pulmonary embolism on spiral CT scan were selected.

Mixing Performance Of A Novel, Continuous Confined Impinging Jets Mixer Using Competitive Reactions, Han Zheng

In this work, a novel continuous flow apparatus featuring the impingement of fluid jet streams in the presence of ultrasonic energy provided by an ultrasonic probe was tested using competitive reactions in order to determine its mixing effectiveness. The ultrasonic energy enhances micromixing of the fluid jet streams, which results in an overall mixing effectiveness improvements in different physical and chemical processes.

Glass-lined reactors are typically used in the pharmaceutical and specialty chemicals industries because of their material compatibility with most reactants and their cleanability. These reactors are typically equipped with a retreat-blade impeller placed close to the bottom of the tank a single baffle mounted from the top. The mixing performance of such reactors has not received significant attention in the literature, despite their ubiquitous presence in the pharmaceutical industry. The review article by Xie and colleagues examines the impact of noise and noise reduction strategies on sleep quality for critically ill patients. Evaluating the impact of noise on sleep quality is challenging, as it must be measured relative to other factors that may be more or less disruptive to patients' sleep. We are attempting to develop cost-effective control methods for the important vector of sleeping sickness, Glossina fuscipes spp. Responses of the tsetse flies Glossina fuscipes fuscipes (in Kenya) and G. f. quanzensis (in Democratic Republic of Congo) to natural host odours are reported. Arrangements of electric nets were used to assess the effect of cattle-, human- and pig-odour on (1) the numbers of tsetse attracted to the odour source and (2) the proportion of flies that landed on a black target (1 × 1 m). Cannabinoid receptor type 2 (CBR2) inhibits microglial reactivity through a molecular mechanism yet to be elucidated. We hypothesized that CBR2 activation induces an anti-inflammatory phenotype in microglia by inhibiting extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK) pathway, via mitogen-activated protein kinase-phosphatase (MKP) induction. MKPs regulate mitogen activated protein kinases, but their role in the modulation of microglial phenotype is not fully understood.

Background: There is limited data examining the association between cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) and health related quality of life (HRQOL) in healthy young adults. We examined the association between CRF and HRQOL Physical Component Summary (PCS) and Mental Component Summary (MCS) scores in apparently health males in the United States Navy.

Methods: A total of 709 males (18-49 yr) performed a submaximal exercise test and HRQOL assessment (SF-12v2^TM) between 2004-2006. Although a relationship has been found in some studies between paternal attachment and female sexual behavior, knowledge of this relationship in African Americans has been limited. The purpose of this research was to determine if there was a relationship between father-daughter attachment, parent teen sexual risk communication and early sexual activity, condom use, history of sexually transmitted infection, global/sexual self-esteem and teen pregnancy in African-American females. The isolation and characterization of cDNAs encoding poly(ADP-ribose) glycohydrolase (PARG) enzymes and the amino acid sequences of PARGs from several species are described. PARG is involved in the cellular response to DNA damage and its proper function is associated with the body's response to neoplastic disorder inducing agents and oxidative stress. Expression vectors containing the cDNAs and cells transformed with the vectors are described. Probes and primers that hybridize with the cDNAs are described. Electrospun nanofibers can be readily assembled into various types of scaffolds for applications in neural tissue engineering. The objective of this study is to examine and understand the unique patterns of neurite outgrowth from primary dorsal root ganglia (DRG) cultured on scaffolds of electrospun nanofibers having different orders, structures, and surface properties. We found that the neurites extended radially outward from the DRG main body without specific directionality when cultured on a nonwoven mat of randomly oriented nanofibers. In contrast, the neurites preferentially extended along the long axis of fiber when cultured on a parallel array of aligned nanofibers. When …

The serotonin (5-HT) receptors, with seven subtypes and at least fifteen distinct members, mediate a wide range of physiological functions both in the central nervous system and in the periphery. All members of the 5-HT family except the 5-HT3 subtype belong to the family of aminergic G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs). Over the years, various molecules have been reported which act selectively at 5-HT2 receptors. However, there are no ligands that exhibit complete selectivity for one subpopulation of 5-HT2 receptors. The peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors (PPARs) are the transcriptional regulators of glucose, lipids and cholesterol metabolisms. It has been established that PPAR-γ is the receptor for thiazolidinediones (TZDs) class of type II anti-diabetic drugs. These compounds act as agonists of PPAR-γ. They may delay the development of type II diabetes in individuals at high risk of developing the condition, and have been shown to have potentially beneficial effects on cardiovascular risk factors. PPAR-γ receptor activation by TZDs improves insulin sensitivity by promoting fatty acid uptake into adipose tissue, increasing production of adiponectin (responsible for glucose regulation and fatty acid metabolism) and …

The purpose of this descriptive quantitative study was to explore the nursing students' perceptions of their attitude and knowledge regarding evidence-based practice (EBP). The Research Awareness Questionnaire (RAQ), previously used only with healthcare professionals was slightly modified and piloted with senior nursing students (N=22). Eighty-two percent (n=18) of the participants believe that EBP is part of their role. Only 41% (n=9) were confident to undertake research. On the actual knowledge measures, 96% (n=21) could define qualitative research, and 86 % (n=19) correctly defined quantitative research. Suggestions for revising the RAQ are discussed.
