Yet policymakers in developing countries, particularly in Africa, have often overlooked men who have sex with men (MSM) as a vulnerable group because of stigmatization of homosexual behavior and denial of the existence of MSM and the role they may play in HIV transmission. Patients with recent myocardial infarction (MI), congestive heart failure, severe angina, or uncorrected multivessel coronary artery disease are at increased risk of cardiac complications after urgent major non-cardiac surgery. Although invasive haemodynamic monitoring and preoperative optimization of cardiac status may lead to some reduction in the rate of perioperative cardiac events, the mortality from such events still remains high. The use of an intra-aortic balloon pump (IABP) may play a role in such patients by improving the function of the injured heart. In this work, 9 species of pelagic gastropods were studied during bottom trawling and net sampling for zooplankton of Akkuyu in Erdemli and in İskenderun Bay (the northeastern Mediterranean). Among those, Pterotrachea hippocampus Phlippi, 1836, Cavolinia tridentate (Forsskal, 1775), Limacina (Munthea) trochiformis (D'Orbigny, 1836), and Corolla spectabilis (Dall, 1871) were first records for Turkish mollusk fauna, and the remaining, Atlanta peronii Lesuer, 1817, Firoloida desmarestia Lesuer, 1817, Clio pyramidata Linné, 1767, Creseis acicula Rang, 1828, and Creseis virgula Rang, 1828 were first records for the Mediterranean coast of Turkey.

The present study investigated the effects of double injections of PGF_{2}\alpha at different intervals (10 vs. 14 days) on plasma progesterone levels, oestrus and lambing rates in Tuj ewes during the breeding season. Thirty clinically healthy mature ewes were assigned randomly into 2 experimental groups: 2 injections of 125 µg of Cloprostenol (a PGF_{2}\alpha analogue) at either 10 (Group I, n = 15) or 14 day (Group II, n = 15) intervals. Juvenile turbot Psetta maxima (Linnaeus, 1758) (15.23 ± 2.99 g) were fed to satiation with a commercial extruded feed over a 60-day period. Feeding regimens were twice a day (TD), every other day (EOD), and 2-day intervals (TDI). Fish were kept in seawater (18 ppt) at 5-7.5 °C from January 21 to March 23, 2004. Feed conversion rate (FCR) and the protein efficiency ratios (PER) were within the ranges of 1.12-1.14 and 2.26-2.29, respectively. The aim of the present report was to evaluate the prevalent species of airborne fungi in the outdoor environment in the city of Trabzon, Turkey. The area is surrounded by high mountains running parallel to the Black Sea, and has a mostly rainy and temperate climate together with a most varied and widespread flora. Air samples were collected in four seasons by means of the gravitational settling method using petri dishes with SDA culture media. Those fungi colonies that formed after an incubation period of 7-10 days at 25 ºC were determined on the basis of micro and macromorphological features. …

Aim: To study the effects of whole body gamma irradiation on bile flow and bile composition in rats. Methods: Three groups of male Sprague-Dawley rats were irradiated with a single 8 gray (Gy) fraction for 15-20 min and examined for bile secretion at different time intervals (18, 48, 72 h) after irradiation. For collection of biliary secretions, rats were anesthetized with intraperitoneal (i.p.) urethane (1.25 g/kg) and equipped with biliary cannulas inserted into the bile duct through the sphincter of Oddi. Chemical form (i.e., species) can influence metal toxicokinetics and toxicodynamics and should be considered to improve human health risk assessment. A microtiter plate assay for quantitation of reduced (GSH) and oxidized (GSSG) glutathione in the rat liver tissue and bile is described. The assay is based on the established enzymatic recycling method and a new thiol-masking reagent, 1-methyl-4-vinyl-pyridinium trifluoromethane sulfonate (M4VP). Samples were first processed by homogenization with (liver) or addition of (bile) sulfosalicylic acid. The total glutathione and GSSG were then determined before and after rapid (>= 2 min) and efficient (100%) masking of the GSH content of the samples with M4VP followed by the enzymatic recycling assay. Unsafe abortion is a major public health and human rights problem in
Argentina. Implementation of a woman-centered post-abortion care
(PAC) model is one strategy to improve the situation. The quality of PAC
services was measured in three public hospitals in Tucumin, a province
with high levels of poverty and maternal mortality due to unsafe abortion.
Overall, the quality of PAC services was found to be poor. Women
do not receive services in a manner that respects their human rights, in
particular their rights to health and health care, information, and to the

The prevalence of childhood obesity is rapidly increasing in the United States and the percentage of overweight or obese children in South Dakota exceeds the objective set by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (2000). A growing number of healthcare professionals have been choosing to wear an open-back shoe rather than a traditional closed-back shoe in the workplace. Healthcare professionals incorporate dynamic balance and quick reactions during direct patient interaction. The purpose of the study was to determine if dynamic balance would be affected in healthcare professionals when wearing open-back shoes versus closed-back shoes.

Purpose: The Z-CoiL ® company has marketed a shoe that is advertised to decrease pressure and attenuation of forces on the foot, ankle, and other lower extremity joints. Evidence based studies, however, are lacking in support of this claim. The purpose of this study was to compare the peak pressure distributed onto the bottom of the foot from heel strike to midstance when walking bare foot, using a personal athletic shoe, and using a Z-CoiL ® shoe.

It is generally accepted that the functional activity of biological macromolecules requires tightly packed three-dimensional structures. Recent theoretical and experimental evidence indicates, however, the importance of molecular flexibility for the proper functioning of some proteins. We examined high resolution structures of proteins in various functional categories with respect to the secondary structure assessment. The latter was considered as a characteristic of the inherent flexibility of a polypeptide chain. We found that the proteins in functionally competent conformational states might be comprised of 20–70% flexible residues. For instance, proteins involved in gene regulation, e.g. transcription factors, are on average largely disordered …

Recent proteome-wide screening approaches have provided a wealth of information about interacting proteins in various organisms. To test for a potential association between protein connectivity and the amount of predicted structural disorder, the disorder propensities of proteins with various numbers of interacting partners from four eukaryotic organisms (Caenorhabditis elegans, Saccharomyces cerevisiae, Drosophila melanogaster, and Homo sapiens) were investigated. The results of PONDR VL-XT disorder analysis show that for all four studied organisms, hub proteins, defined here as those that interact with ≥10 partners, are significantly more disordered than end proteins, defined here as those that interact with just one partner. …
