Objective: To evaluate the symptomatology of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) among health care professionals attending an IBS symposium in a tertiary care university hospital. Method: A questionnaire designed to incorporate Manning and Rome II criteria was distributed among participants of an IBS symposium, most of them were health care professionals. A total of 100 questionnaires were distributed, 41 had symptoms fulfilling criteria of IBS. In these patients male: female ratio was 28:13 with age range 18-68. Results: The predominant symptom was abdominal pain 87.8 % (36/41) which was aggravated post-prandially 72.2% (29/41), relieved following defecation in 87 % (35/41) with …

Studies indicate that medical procedures may cause post-traumatic stress (PTS) symptoms (fear, avoidance, sleep disturbances, irritability, concentration difficulties. hypervigilance). It has been suggested that administration of midazolam hydrochloride, a sedative/amnesic medication commonly used in the Pediatric Intensive Care Units (PICU), may help decrease if not prevent the development of PTS symptoms. Many investigators have observed that fetal and neonatal animals are remarkably tolerant to hypoxia compared to the adult. The precise mechanisms however are still unclear. In order to better characterize the hemodynamic and metabolic responses of the fetal brain to hypoxic stress, we have designed a mathematical model to predict tissue oxygenation and metabolic rate of the fetal brain during both moderate hypoxia and severe asphyxia.

Previous studies have evaluated the effects of various hemostatic agents on radicular tissues following apical surgery. The purpose of this study was to examine the early osseous responses to seven hemostatic agents under identical conditions in rabbits. Sixteen adult male New Zealand white rabbits were used for this study. Following anesthesia, utilizing a midline submandibular incision, standardized bony defects were prepared on the lateral-superior regions of the mandible. Test materials were placed using standardized volumes and exposure times. The radiodensity of a composite resin can greatly influence a clinician's ability to analyze a restoration for failure. The purpose of this study was to determine the relative radiopacities of 29 resin restorative materials compared to enamel, and to verify the comparable radiopacity between shades of 23 of the restorative composite resin materials. Composite resin discs measuring >5mm in diameter and 2 mm in thickness were made and polymerized. The purpose of this study was to quantitatively evaluate; 1) mandibular posterior mono-cortical block onlay bone graft success rates 2) the amount of grafted bone retained after initial resorption in radiographic projections. Seven consecutive patients with 14 mandibular posterior implant sites requiring bone augmentation for implants of a standard 3.8mm x 10mm dimension were sought. The Motion Sensitivity Test (MST) is a clinical protocol designed to measure motion-provoked dizziness during a series of 16 quick changes to head or body positions. The MST has been used as a guide for developing an exercise program for patients with motion-provoked dizziness and as a treatment outcome measure to monitor the effectiveness of vestibular rehabilitation therapy. This study determined validity, test-retest reliability, and interrater reliability of the MST. Fifteen individuals with motion-provoked dizziness and ten control individuals were tested during sessions occurring 90 min and/or 24 hr after baseline testing. Objective: To determine the frequency of various types of cutaneous appendage tumors in our practice.
Method: This is a partly retrospective and partly prospective study conducted at the Department of Pathology, Histopathology Section, The Aga Khan University Hospital, Karachi between 1st January 1997 and 31st December 2001.
Results: One hundred sixty six skin appendage tumors were diagnosed during the study period. 87.3% were benign, while 12.6% were malignant. Male female ratio was almost equal. Mean age was 41.72 years. 37.34% showed eccrine differentiation, 14.45% showed apocrine differentiation and 41.56% showed pilosebaceous differentiation, 6.62% exhibited mixed differentiation. The aim of the study was to investigate the motility and viability of canine epididymal spermatozoa, collected from the epididymides following orchidectomy (castration), over a period of time. Sperm samples were collected at 25-28oC from the caudal epididymis, 0, 1, 3, 6, and 12 hours, after the castration of 75 fertile dogs (1-10 years old). Progressive motility and viability of the epididymal sperm decreased over a period of time, after the collection. Rectal, faecal samples from 14 sheep were collected 3 times a day (morning, noon and evening) and examined for nematode eggs by the formalin-ether, sedimentation technique and the Brine floatation technique. The faecal egg counts were done by using the Stoll’s dilution, egg counting technique. The sheep were injected with ivermectin (Ivomec®) (0.2 mg/kg) subcutaneously. Three weeks later, faecal samples were collected and examined to determine the outcome of the treatment. It was found that strongyles and Trichuris ovis eggs were absent. It was concluded that Ivomec® showed good efficacy for the treatment of some gastrointestinal nematodes in this study …

A study of canine, gastric, Helicobacter spp. infection was performed. A total of 56 biopsied samples of cardia, fundus, body and pyloric antrum, submitted to the Department of Pathology, Faculty of Veterinary Science, Chulalongkorn University, during October, 2001 to 2002, were investigated. The objective of this study was to detect Helicobacter spp. infections in the stomach of dogs and to confirm any relationship between the histopathological changes in the stomach with the presence of bacteria. The histopathological results revealed inflammatory cell infiltration 100%(56/56), crypt distortion 69.64%(39/56), lymphoid follicular formation 67.86% (38/56) and epithelial degeneration 28.57%(16/56). The dynamic field theory predicts that biases toward remembered locations depend on the separation between targets, and the spatial precision of interactions in working memory that become enhanced over development. This was tested by varying the separation between A and B locations in a sandbox. Children searched for an object 6 times at an A location, followed by 3 trials at a B location. Two- and 4-year-olds’, but not 6-year-olds’, responses were biased toward A when A and B were 9-in. and 6-in. apart. The purpose of this study was to determine the feasibility of a flexible multiple daily insulin (FMDI) regimen in routine pediatric diabetes care by comparing HbA_1c, body mass index (BMI), and episodes of severe hypoglycemia (SH) before and after initiation of FMDI therapy. Data from 44 patients (2-16 years old), on a conventional insulin (CI) regimen, were collected during quarterly diabetes clinic visits.
