The objective of the experiment was to study the number of oocytes recovered, their quality and the recovery rate after superovulation, in order to use the oocytes, as a cytoplasm recipient in a nuclear transfer program. A total of 38, New Zealand White mature, doe rabbits were divided into 3 groups, according to the chosen dose of Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH); 21 mg (group A), 28 mg (group B) and 40 mg (group C). Five IM injections of FSH were given at 12 hr interval by increasing doses for group A and B and a constant dose for group C. …

Superior Check Ligament Desmotomy For The Treatment Of Chronic Superficial Digital Flexor Tendinitis In Horses., Atichat Brahmasa, Voraphan Na Songkla

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

Bilateral check ligament desmotomies were performed on 7 horses (2 males and 5 females) that had been suffering from either, unilateral or bilateral, chronic, superficial digital flexor tendinitis,for 3-10 months. Healing was uneventful in all cases. Eight to twelve months postoperatively, all horses returned to racing with no subsequent injury to the previously affected tendons. However, typical, palpable, fibrotic enlargement remained within the palmar aspect of the superficial digital flexor tendons of all the horses.

A strong association exists between the presence of steatosis in a donor liver for transplantation and the development of primary nonfunction in the recipient. Despite this, appraisal of the donor remains one of the least scientific aspects of the transplantation process, and many centers base their practice on subjective opinion, rather than objective data. We conducted this survey to illuminate controversial issues and highlight the variation of opinion and practice policies both between and within the United Kingdom and the United States. Takayasu’s Arteritis is a chronic, idiopathic, inflammatory disease that primarily affects large blood vessels such as aorta and its branches.1 Neurological symptoms occur in about 50% of cases but stroke occurs in about 10% of patients with Takayasu’s Arteritis2 . We report two such cases and emphasize the need for thorough evaluation of young patients with stroke to establish the underlying etiology.

The objective of this paper is to review current knowledge on the relationship between weaning-to-first-service interval (WSI) in sows and subsequent reproductive performance, in order to optimize and improve mating efficiency. WSI is an important indicator of sows reproductive performance and is closely associated with subsequent fertility. Sows with a WSI of 4-5 days have a larger subsequent litter size, compared to those with a WSI of 7-10 days. Studies have demonstrated that the WSI influences the duration of oestrus, being shorter in sows with a longer WSI. In sows with a short duration of oestrous, the duration from the …

Median cleft of the lower lip and associated structures is a relatively rare condition. We report the case of a patient with mandibular cleft. Unlike other reported cases of similar disorders, there was no cleft of the lower lip. The literature on median clefts of the lower lip and mandible is reviewed, and the etiology and treatment are discussed.

The paper presents actions taken since then by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, Department of Health and Human Services, to address what the Bush administration calls abusive funding practices used by states to draw federal Medicaid matching funds. Tracing the Clinton and Bush administrations' policies, the document reviews final regulations, published in January 2001 and January 2002, on these practices. BACKGROUND: Alternative mRNA splicing of alpha(i2), a heterotrimeric G protein alpha subunit, has been shown to produce an additional protein, termed salpha(i2). In the salpha(i2) splice variant, 35 novel amino acids replace the normal C-terminal 24 amino acids of alpha(i2). Whereas alpha(i2) is found predominantly at cellular plasma membranes, salpha(i2) has been localized to intracellular Golgi membranes, and the unique 35 amino acids of salpha(i2) have been suggested to constitute a specific targeting signal. A research consortium comprised of representatives from several universities and national laboratories has been established as part of this on-going project to generate internal and external dose conversion coefficients for radionuclides produced in spallation neutron sources. Information obtained from this multi-year study will be used to support the siting and licensing of future accelerator-driven nuclear initiatives within the U.S. Department of Energy complex, including the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) and Accelerator Production of Tritium (APT) Projects. The isolation and characterization of cDNAs encoding poly(ADP-ribose) glycohydrolase (PARG) enzymes and the amino acid sequences of PARGs from several species are described. PARG is involved in the cellular response to DNA damage and its proper function is associated with the body's response to neoplastic disorder inducing agents and oxidative stress. Expression vectors containing the cDNAs and cells transformed with the vectors are described. Probes and primers that hybridize with the cDNAs are described. Expression of the cDNA in E. coli results in an enzymatically active protein of about 111 kDa and an active fragment of about 59 kDa. Methods …

The present study investigated the effects of two herbal components (BACCOFF^TM and DIPSTOP ™) of a commercially available smokeless tobacco treatment program for reducing subjective withdrawal symptoms during deprivation. One component, BACCOFF™, is a non-nicotinic chew. The second component, DIPSTOP™, is a liquid containing the alkaloid lobeline, which to some extent mimics peripheral nicotinic effects. All participants (N = 22 males) were placed in four conditions: BACCOFF™ + DIPSTOP™, BACCOFF™ + placebo control, DIPSTOP™ only, and placebo control only. The conditions involved 48 h of deprivation, and subjects were exposed to one condition per week for 4 weeks. …

A 44-year-old construction worker (victim) was killed when a 36-inch-wide bucket weighing more than 1000 pounds, detached from its quick release coupler and fell from an excavator, landing on him as he was working in a trench. The victim and another worker had been in the trench preparing it for a pre-formed concrete manhole that they were about to install. Their supervisor (the excavator operator) sat and waited in the excavator, with the engine running, and the bucket raised a few feet above ground level so that it would be out of the way. A 16-year-old female was killed after the tractor on which she was riding as a passenger overturned. She was a high school student; farmed on evenings and weekends. The tractor was driven by a 20-year-old friend while baling hay on a farm at dusk. The driver and the victim had been baling hay all day, and both were experienced farmers. The victim was seated on the fender to the left of the driver. This paper reviews the food safety regulatory apparatus in place today, especially the activities of the two lead agencies in assuring food safety — the Food and Drug Administration within the Department of Health and Human Services and the Food Safety and Inspection Service within the Department of Agriculture. It examines the system's strengths and vulnerabilities, particularly in light of the post–September 11 environment that includes the heightened threat of terrorism. The paper also touches upon legislative and budgetary proposals aimed at improving food security, including the growing but debated interest in a single food safety agency.

Proteoglycans participate in growth factor interaction with the cell surface through their heparan sulfate chains (HS), but it is not known if they are otherwise involved in growth factor signaling. It appears now that the syndecan-4 core protein, a transmembrane proteoglycan shown previously to bind phosphatidylinositol 4,5-bisphosphate (PIP(2)) and activate PKC alpha, participates in mediating the effects of fibroblast growth factor (FGF)2 on cell function. Mutations in the cytoplasmic tail of syndecan-4 that either reduced its affinity to PIP(2) (PIP(2)(-)) or disrupted its postsynaptic density 95, disk large, zona occludens-1 (PDZ)-dependent binding (PDZ(-)) produced a FGF2-specific dominant negative phenotype in …
