Macro-Microscopic Fluorescence Imaging Of Human Npc Xenografts In A Murine Model Using Topical Vs. Intravenous Administration Of 5-Aminolevulinic Acid, Vanaja Manivasager, Paul Wan Sia Heng, Jinsong Hao, Wei Zheng, Khee Chee Soo, Malini Olivo

Pharmaceutical Science and Research

The use of 5-aminolevulinic acid to induce endogenous porphyrins for the purpose of detection of epithelial cancers is being studied extensively in many centres around the world. The challenge is to prepare an efficacious formulation of 5-ALA for the purpose of cancer detection. In this study, we compared two formulations of topical 5-ALA applications with intravenous administration in NPC/CNE-2 xenografts on balb/c nude mice. One of the formulations was a gantrez muco-adhesive patch and the other was a polyvinyl-pyrolidone muco-adhesive patch. The present invention provides novel water soluble testosterone analogs. These testosterone analogs are suitable for intranasal administration to patients requiring increased plasma testosterone levels. The present invention also provides pharmaceutical compositions containing the testosterone analogs of the present invention. The present invention further provides a method of increasing plasma testosterone levels in patients in need of such treatment comprising the intranasal administration of the water-soluble testosterone analogs and pharmaceutical compositions of the present invention.

With reauthorization of the 1996 welfare reform law being debated, this paper looks at the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families block grant and the Child Care and Development Fund — key components of congressional proposals to set a dollar amount for government spending on child care. This issue brief provides background on current child care use, arrangements, and cost, as well as research findings on the measurement of quality in child care programs.

We have previously found that retinoic acid stimulates the expression of protein kinase Cα (PKC) in B16 mouse melanoma cells. Because it has been reported that PKC can phosphorylate retinoic acid receptor (RAR) and alter its function, we determined whether changes in the level and/or activity of PKC could affect the expression or function of the RAR in B16 melanoma. Using in vivophosphorylation and band shift techniques, we could not demonstrate that altering PKC activity and/or protein level changed thein vivo phosphorylation of RARα. However activation of PKC resulted in increased RARα protein. Increased receptor protein correlated with …

Background:

Supplementing mice with high levels of dietary n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) increases the n-3 PUFAs in cell membranes, increases the susceptibility of the cells for lipid peroxidation (LPO) and decreases the growth rate of mammary and other tumors. However, the results of an earlier study indicated that a factor in addition to LPO was involved in the reduction in tumor growth in n-3 PUFAs fed mice. A method for obtaining molecules from a substantially intact single cell is disclosed. The method differs from prior methods that obtain a variable fraction of a cell's contents and therefore cannot quantitatively estimate the number of molecules in the cells. The present method comprises isolating and harvesting a substantially intact single cell from its organ tissue comprising the steps of subjecting a tissue mass to a dissociation method so that the cells are dissociated from the tissue to expose cell bodies or cell processes, contacting a dissociated cell with a device capable of collecting the cell from the tissue substantially …

Two candidate human orthologs of Escherichia coli MutM/Nei were recently identified in the human genome database, and one of these, NEH1, was characterized earlier (Hazra, T. K., Izumi, T., Boldogh, I., Imhoff, B., Kow, Y. W., Jaruga, P., and Dizdaroglu, M. (2002) Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. U. S. A. 99, 3523-3528). Here we report characterization of the second protein, originally named NEH2 and now renamed NEIL2 (Nei-like). The 37-kDa wild-type NEIL2 expressed in and purified from E. coli has DNA glycosylase/AP lyase activity, primarily for excising oxidative products of cytosine, with highest activity for 5-hydroxyuracil, one of the most abundant …

I. Introduction

Over the past twenty years dramatic changes have occurred in the health care industry. Between 1980 and 1993 expenditures increased from about 9 to almost 14 percent of GDP. Since 1993 spending has remained at about 14 percent of GDP, and health care spending in the U.S. has grown at an average rate of 5 percent, substantially below the 12 percent annual growth experienced in earlier years (Health Care Financing Administration, 2000). The emerging consensus is that the rapidly rising costs of the 1980s and early 1990s was driven primarily by technological change (Newhouse, 1992; Fuchs, 1996), and …

High turnover rates mean that community providers of services to individuals with developmental disabilities may be replacing almost their entire direct service workforces each year. This instability imposes significant costs on each provider for recruiting, screening, and training replacement workers. It also adversely affects the quality of care provided to individuals served by community providers. Although the relationship requires further study, caregiver continuity appears to be an important factor in the health of an individual with developmental disabilities. The following observations are based on completed Corporation Questionnaires from seven Montana developmental disabilities service providers.

America is a drug-oriented society. For many years people have used drugs for recreational purposes. However, there has been ongoing controversy regarding drug abuse and drug use. The purpose of this study was to assess attitudes and beliefs of successful adult drug users as it relates to drug reform, effectiveness of current drug laws, and problem experiences that they may have encountered as a result of their drug use. A qualitative study utilizing three open-ended questions regarding the aforementioned areas was conducted to analyze the 156 individuals' responses. Reducing Childhood Pedestrian Injuries: Proceedings Of A Multidisciplinary Conference, Richard A. Schieber, Maria Vegega

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Motor vehicle crashes are associated with one of every five deaths among children 1 to 14 years of age in the United States, and pedestrian injuries account for a third of them. Compared with occupant injuries, pedestrian injuries are more severe; death is five times more likely to occur among those injured. In 1999, 533 child pedestrians were killed, and at least 30,000 children were nonfatally injured in traffic. Another 200 were killed in non-traffic areas, including driveways, sidewalks, and parking lots. Traumatic brain injury accounts for more than half the fatalities.

We assessed the incidence and etiology of hyponatremia in the 100-mile (161 km) Iditasport ultramarathon. Subjects (8 cyclists, 8 runners) were weighed and serum sodium was measured pre- and post-race. Race diets were analyzed to determine fluid and sodium consumption. Subjects were split by post-race serum sodium concentration into hyponatremic and normonatremic groups for statistical analyses. Seven of 16 subjects (44%) were hyponatremic. The hyponatremic group exhibited a significant decrease in serum sodium concentration (137.0 to 132.9 mmol/L, and the normonatremic group experienced a significant decrease in weight (82.1 to 80.2 kg) pre- to post-race.
