Reflex sympathetic dystrophy syndrome (RSDS) is a chronic painful syndrome, which may cause extreme pain and disability of the involved limbs of the patients. The unknown of causes of RSDS keep patients and clinicians from early prevention of this syndrome. Smoking may affect the sympathetic system. The purpose of this study was to find whether smoking has the prominent correlation with the morbidity of RSDS.This is a retrospective study by surveying the medical records of patients with RSDS admitted in Tri-Service General Hospital from January 1996 to December 2001. The purpose of the study was to measure the peak pressure under the metatarsal heads (MTH) of young men and women in walking with high resolution pressure system and to determine their reliability. The peak pressure of sixteen health men and women, aged from twenty-one to thirty-five years-old, were measured at the first, second and third metatarsal head by high resolution pressure system for ten repetitions using first-step method. Peak pressure at the second MTH (68.2±43.9 N/cm2 for women, 52.6±21.1 N/cm2 for men) was significantly higher than the first MTH (28.4±13.8 N/cm2 for women, 35.5±18.2 N/cm2 for men) and third …

Spinal cord infarction is a rare disease. It is even more uncommon that spinal cord infarction occurs in a patient without any cardiovascular disease. Anterior spinal artery syndrome is much more common than the posterior spinal artery syndrome due to the difference in collateral supply. We present two patients with spinal cord infarction. In both patients, the clinical picture was stereotyped: sudden onset of weakness of limbs, sensory loss below the level of infarction and sphincter dysfunction. Treatment for the two patients was supportive and they had a good recovery over a period of weeks.

The clinical appearance of aortic dissection is characterized by the sudden, acute chest or abdominal pain, accompanied by coldness in the limbs and sweating-like symptoms of shock. Absent pulse or asymmetric pulse was observed in some patients. If the feeding arteries of the specific organs are located in the false lumen, this may lead to sudden loss of blood supply to the tissue e.g. spinal cord, resulting in cord damage. In the previous reports, approximately 20% of the individuals with aortic dissection might have neurological deficit resulting from insufficiency of blood supply. Description Of A Poorly Differentiated Carcinoma Within The Brainstem Of A White Whale (Delphinapterus Leucas) From Magnetic Resonance Images And Histological Analysis, Sam H. Ridgway, Lori Marino, T. P. Lipscomb

In this study we used magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to investigate neuroanatomical structure in the brain of a white whale (Delphinapterus leucas) that died from a large tumor within the brainstem. This specimen was also compared with a normal white whale brain using MRI. MRI scans of the white whale specimen show how the tumor deformed surrounding brain structure. Histopathological analysis indicated a poorly differentiated carcinoma of uncertain origin. These analyses demonstrate the usefulness of supplementing histological analyses of pathology with studies of gross morphology facilitated by MRI.

In this study, magnetic resonance (MR) images of the brain of an adult common dolphin (Delphinus delphis) were acquired in the coronal plane at 66 antero-posterior levels. From these scans a computer-generated set of resectioned virtual images in orthogonal planes was constructed using the programs VoxelView and VoxelMath (Vital Images, Inc., Michigan State Univ.). Sections in all three planes reveal major neuroanatomical structures. These structures in the adult common dolphin brain are compared with those from a fetal common dolphin brain from a previously published study as well as with MR images of adult brains of other odontocetes. …

Mentha (Nepetoideae, Lamiaceae) is a taxonomically complex genus that includes economically important members such as spearmint and peppermint and species of global conservation interest. Mentha is considered challenging systematically due to its high incidence of polyploidy, diverse morphology, variation in base chromosome number, and frequent interspecific hybridization. Our objectives were to test the monophyly of Mentha and each of its traditionally recognized sections, assess phylogenetic relationships of the Mentha species, test hypotheses of hybridization for the putative stabilized allopolyploids (M spicata and M. canadensis), and determine the ancestral base chromosome number using DNA sequence data from the chloroplast trnL-trnF and …

Adherens junction formation is fundamental for compaction and trophectoderm differentiation during mammalian preimplantation development. We recently isolated an IQGAP-2 cDNA from a differential display-polymerase chain reaction screen of bovine preimplantation developmental stages. IQGAP-1 and -2 proteins mediate E-cadherin-based cell-to-cell adhesion through interactions with beta-catenin and the Rho GTPases, rac1 and cdc42. Our study demonstrates IQGAP-1,-2, rac-1 and cdc42 mRNAs are present throughout murine preimplantation development. IQGAP-1 and rac-1 protein distribution changes from predominantly plasma membrane associated to predominantly cytoplasmic as the embryo progresses through cleavage divisions and compaction to the blastocyst stage.

Although public housing is typically associated with high crime rates, little research has been done on fear of crime or violent victimization experiences among public housing residents. Moreover, there are few studies that look specifically at women’s fear of crime or violent victimization experiences in public housing, despite the fact that women constitute the majority of public housing residents. These issues were examined in the present study through interviews with female public housing residents in Camden, New Jersey (NJ). Context: Cryokinetics is a common rehabilitative technique. To date, no data describing capsular temperature cycling during cryokinetics have been reported. Objective: To compare ankle capsular temperature before and at the end of each exercise bout during a typical cryokinetics session. Design: A 2 x 10 repeated measure factorial design was used. The independent variables were treatment and bout. The dependent variable for this study capsular temperature of the lateral talo-crural joint. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the clinical utility of the Behavior Dimensions Scale (BDS; McCamey, 1995a; 1995b) in the diagnosis of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. Forty-eight children, ages 6 to 11 years old, referred to a university-based psychology clinic for evaluation of ADHD, were participants in the study. Parents and teachers of children completed the parent and teacher rating forms of the BDS as well as the Achenbach parent and teacher rating forms (Child Behavior Checklist [CBCL] and Teacher's Report Form [TRF]; Achenbach, 1991a; 1991b) as part of a larger assessment battery. The purpose of this study was to identify the frequency and nature of perceived restrictions by certified athletic trainers (ATCs) and to determine the frequency of perceived restrictions for each practice setting within states that have legislation. This was a qualitative-descriptive study performed with a web-based survey. 10,000 ATCs receiving electronic mail from the National Athletic Trainers' Association (NATA) were invited to participate in this study. 1158 subjects participated in the study, and 724 subjects (295 female and 429 male; age=33.2 ± 8.3yrs) remained after exclusions. The purpose of this study was to survey special education teachers and speech therapists in eleven school districts in Northeast Tennessee regarding their knowledge level (etiology and educational programming) of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The primary focus of the study was to identify effective programs and methods used by special educators in this region, comparing them to the latest techniques and teaching methods prescribed by recent research. In addition, identified weaknesses were used to recommend future training and staff development to enable educators to provide the best possible programs for children with autism.

Fracturing a hip is a devastating experience for the older adult, and mortality and morbidity following a hip fracture are high among this vulnerable population. Mortality rates from 12 to 37 percent have been reported within one year after a hip fracture. It is estimated that 50 percent of individuals who experience hip fractures become partially dependent in activities of daily living, and 33 percent become totally dependent in activities of daily living. Reducing morbidity by improving rehabilitation outcomes is an important healthcare goal for older adults. Measurement of intuition use among nursing students has not occurred because developed intuition measures have been designed specifically for experienced nurses. The purpose of this study was to develop and psychometrically evaluate an intuition instrument for nursing students. An intuition instrument can provide the means to (a) determine if students use intuition in care providing activities and (b) measure intuition use over time. Instrument development included (a) concept clarification, (b) item development, and (c) psychometric testing.
