Evidence For Infanticide In Bottlenose Dolphins Of The Western North Atlantic, Dale G. Dunn, Susan G. Barco, D. Ann Pabst, William A. Mclellan

Nine bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) calves that stranded in Virginia in 1996 and 1997 died of severe blunt-force trauma. Injuries were concentrated on the head and chest and multiple rib fractures, lung lacerations, and soft tissue contusions were prominent. Skeletal and/or soft tissue trauma occurred bilaterally in all of the calves. One had a bite wound across the left mandible that exhibited deep punctures consistent with the tooth placement in an adult bottlenose dolphin. The lesions were not compatible with predation, boat strike, fisheries interactions, rough-surf injury, or blast injury. However, they were similar to traumatic injuries described in stranded …

Objective: To see the clinical features and treatment of children with Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML) in Pakistan. Setting: Tertiary referral at a specialist Hematology/Oncology center.
Methods: Retrospective, chart-based review of children (less than 14 years) admitted to the hospital with a diagnosis of AML between January 1987 and August 1997.

PROBLEM/CONDITION: Since 1971, CDC, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and the Council of State and Territorial Epidemiologists (CSTE) have maintained a collaborative surveillance system for the occurrences and causes of waterborne-disease outbreaks (WBDOs).This surveillance system is the primary source of data concerning the scope and effects of waterborne diseases on persons in the United States.

REPORTING PERIOD COVERED: This summary includes data regarding outbreaks occurring during January 1999-December 2000 and previously unreported outbreaks occurring in 1995 and 1997.

In "Depression as a Mind-Body Problem," Walter Glannon outlines a psychosocial-physiological explanation of depression as a psychological response to chronic stress—today, especially social stress—in which cortisol imbalances disrupt neurotransmitters. Accordingly, treatment for depression should combine psychopharmacology and psychotherapy—a valuable reminder in light of the current restrictions on funding for health care (Hobson and Leonard 2001). My comments focus, however, on Glannon's objections to evolutionary theorists who explain our capacity for depression as adaptive to the natural and social environment. His objections are implausible because he fails to distinguish depression as a mood and a disorder.

Faculty practice can promote a collaborative partnership mutually beneficial to both nursing education and service. However, little is known about its implementation in developing countries. The purpose of this study was to explore the potential for introducing faculty practice within the cultural milieu of Karachi, Pakistan. Focus groups of nursing faculty, staff and students were conducted in various settings: government, semi government and private institutions to elicit the data. Data analysis revealed that a more comprehensive definition of faculty practice is needed that will provide the foundation for a culturally acceptable model of faculty practice in Pakistan. Cloning And Expression Of The Gene Encoding Industrial \Alpha-Amylase From Bacillus Subtilis Orba97 In Escherichia Coli And Bacillus Subtilis Yb886, Numan Özcan

The \alpha-amylase encoding gene from Bacillus subtilis ORBA97 strain was cloned and expressed in Escherichia coli with the plasmid vector called pUC18 as well as in the \alpha-amylase negative Bacillus subtilis YB886 strain by using the pUB110 vector. The specific activity of the enzyme was determined to be 5.052 µmol (mg protein min)^{-1}. Zymogram analysis revealed no sign of protease degradation in the YB886 strain. The optimum temperature and pH of the enzyme were found to be 50°C and 5 respectively. Relative enzyme activity decreased to 36% of the original activity when it was subjected to a temperature of 90°C …

In this study, the gonadosomatic index value and flesh productivity of Scorpion Fish (Scorpaena porcus Linne., 1758) were investigated for fish caught in the Sinop region using bottom nets. With this purpose, the gonadosomatic index value of a total of 633 samples were examined. The gonadosomatic index was found to have a maximum value in June and a minimum value in September. The flesh productivity of females was determined to be 34.24 ± 0.014 and 34.47 ± 0.015 for males and 34.35 ± 0.007 as a mean. This study describes a salmonella infection in a chinchilla farm of 40 families in the Yalova region. Twenty-four families were affected in a 10-day period after the outbreak of the disease and the clinical signs were apathy, anorexia, diarrhoea with or without hemorrhage, tremors, local paralysis, mucopurulent or hemorrhagic vaginal secretion in some females, abortions in 1 to 2 month-pregnant animals and death. The newborn and pregnant animals were affected more severely. A total of 404 horses was examined from the selected cities (Istanbul, Bursa, Balıkesir) of the Marmara region of Turkey. Blood was collected from all horses and the sera were analyzed for the presence of antibodies to equine infectious anemia virus (EIAV) using an agar gel immunodiffusion (AGID) test. The results revealed that none of the horses were positive for antibodies to EIAV.

Polysaccharidase genes from rumen bacteria were transferred to and expressed in ruminal and non-ruminal Gram-positive bacteria. The transformation efficiency and genetic stability of polysaccharidase genes in bacteria from different habitats were investigated. PCR amplification of cloned polysaccharidase genes from Escherichia coli, Lactococcus lactis, Enterococcus faecalis, Streptococcus sanguis and S. bovis strain 26 showed that rearrangement of plasmid and the gene fragment did not occur. The DNA band sizes from all primers agreed with the expectations of some transformants of S. bovis JB1 being rearranged. Seafoods are very perishable, and many different methods are used for the determination of their quality. Sensory and hypoxanthine values of cold stored trout burgers, which we prepared, were determined during a 28-day period. Burgers spoiled after the 21st day of storage. The TVB-N values were still very low when the burgers spoiled and the pH values decreased during their storage. Therefore total volatile bases nitrogen and pH analyses were not useful for the determination of the quality of trout burgers. In this research, monophasic, diphasic and triphasic logistic growth curve functions used to introduce the growing of the body weight in Japanese quail (Coturnix japonica) are presented. In male and female Japanese quail, the diphasic growth curve fits better than the other growth curves because of residual variance, autocorrelation and determination coefficients. In addition, the diphasic growth function is compared with the monophasic growth function to study the relationship between these two approaches for describing growth curves.

In this study, chemical and sensory changes were investigated in pike-perch (Sander lucioperca Bogustkaya & Naseka,1996) fillets during frozen storage (-18 ºC) of 7 months. Total volatile basic nitrogen (TVB-N, mg N/100 g), thiobarbituric acid (TBA, mg malonaldehyde/1000 g) and pH were considered as chemical quality criteria of fish flesh. TVB-N value was 4.19 mg N/100 g at the beginning, but increased to 14.90 mg N/100 g at the end of the research.
