Intramuscular Sensory Neurolysis : A New Technique To Control Spasticity, Chang-Zern Hong

This preliminary report demonstrated a new technique, “intramuscular sensory neurolysis” (IMSN), to control the muscle spasticity. Similar to myofascial trigger point (MTrP) injection, the needle were rapidly inserted, for a short distance (1 mm) each thrust, into the MTrP region (in the endplate zone) to elicit local twitch responses to identify the terminal sensory fibers for phenol injection. Immediate relief of spasticity was noticed both subjectively and objectively after IMSN. The purpose of the study was to develop ethnic-specific equations for fat-free mass (FFM) from selected anthropometric dimensions and bioelectrical impedance measures of resistance (R) and reactance (Xc) for use in the NHLBI Growth and Heath Study. Using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry measures of body composition as the dependent variable and field measures of body composition by anthropometry and bioelectrical impedance as the explanatory variables, ethnic-specific prediction equations were developed on a sample of girls representing a wide range of ages and BMI. The objectives of this study were to assess the gait patterns of stroke patients, and to evaluate the correlation between gait variables and clinical status of stroke patients. A Motion Analysis System was used to collect gait data of temporal-spatial and kinematic variables from stroke patients and age-matched controls. Twenty-three ambulatory stroke patients (age 55±10 years; time since stroke 9.7±7.1 months) were analyzed. Nine age-matched healthy elderly subjects were recruited as a control group. Stroke patients had slower walking speed, increased stance period and decreased swing period in the unaffected limb. Gait symmetry was compromised. The temporal-spatial variables could not …

The goal of this study was to explore knowledge, attitude and behavioral intention towards traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) among people with spinal cord injury (SCI). 155 valid sample questionnaires were collected and the following results were drawn from descriptive and inferential statistical analysis. The item with highest percentage being answered accurately was ”traditional Chinese drugs are made in different forms, such as boiled soup, pills, or condensed powder”. The greatest agreement regarding attitude toward positive tendency to TCM was ”agree that SCI victims are free of charge to take TCM service under the policy of health insurance”. Background and purpose: Magnetic fields have been widely used in diagnosis and treatment of diseases. The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of magnets on nerve conduction studies (NCS) in human. Methods: After excluding subjects with peripheral neuropathy or diabetic neuropathy, 12 normal subjects were recruited (mean age is 30.0 ± 5.2 years old; 5 are female and 7 are male). The goal of the study is to assess the prevalence, severity, and correlation with sex and age associated with scoliosis in elementary school children in Taitung city. A total of 5,611 children were screened characteristically for scoliosis using Adam’s forward bending test. Those schoolchildren who had positive forward bending test were referred to hospital for whole spinal radiographs, so that the Cobb angle could be quantified to evaluate the severity of scoliosis. 115 children had positive signs in screening test for scoliosis; the positive rate was 2.05% (girls: 2.46%, boys: 1.68%); and the positive rate of the children above 10 …

Infantile torticollis is a common condition in rehabilitation clinics. Acute torticollis due to atlanto-axial rotatory subluxation, however, is an uncommon condition in children. The diagnosis is usually delayed due to difficulty in the evaluation of roentgenograms, as well as to clinicians’ unawareness of this disorder. Delayed unrecognized atlanto-axial subluxation may make the treatment more complicated. Here, we review three cases who had atlanto-axial rotatory subluxation successfully treated with manipulation.

Intractable hiccup, or chronic hiccup, is a rare manifestation. Although it is not common in the patients with cerebral infarction, the incidence of intractable hiccup seems to be higher in brainstem stroke. Because of intractable hiccup, the patients will be severely affected physically and emotionally during feeding, sleep activities, and even rehabilitation program. Intractable hiccup also results in a lot of complications, such as malnutrition, weight loss, aspiration pneumonia, myofascial pain syndrome, reflux esophagitis and sliding hernia. The growing feminization of the migration of ethnic indigenous women, such as Mixtecs, Zapotecs and Triquis from the southern Mexican state of Oaxaca, are altering the dynamics and configuration of traditional Mexican migration, making it especially significant for the health professions. Informed by a postcolonial ecofeminist paradigm, this bi-national grounded theory study explored the migration and health experiences of indigenous Oaxacan immigrant/migrant women. Data collection using participant observation and interviewing occurred in Oaxaca, Mexico, along the US-Mexico border, and the interior of California. Dimensional analysis was used as the method of data analysis to generate theoretical understandings of these phenomena. …

Our research provides new econometric evidence concerning partial economic risk sharing between a frail elderly parent and an adult child. We estimate a jointly determined limited dependent variables system explaining the parent’s entry into a nursing home, the adult child’s visits to the parent, and the adult child’s labor supplied. The time allocation of adult sons is unaffected by a parent’s frail health. Adult daughters who visit a frail elderly parent daily decrease their annual labor supplied by about 1,000 hours annually, largely through labor force non-participation.
