Disclosed is a method for preparing a composition that is capable of activating the expression of a gene involved in the synthesis of an isoprenoid, the method involving: (a) contacting a plant cell with an elicitor under conditions that allow an elicitor-induced release of a compound that activates the synthesis of an isoprenoid; and (b) recovering a composition including the compound, wherein the compound is diffusible and has a molecular weight less than or equal to 10,000 daltons. This study presents evidence that phosphoinositide (PI) 3-kinase is involved in T cell Ca(2+) signaling via a phosphatidylinositol 3,4, 5-trisphosphate PI(3,4,5)P(3)-sensitive Ca(2+) entry pathway. First, exogenous PI(3,4,5)P(3) at concentrations close to its physiological levels induces Ca(2+) influx in T cells, whereas PI(3,4)P(2), PI(4, 5)P(2), and PI(3)P have no effect on [Ca(2+)](i). This Ca(2+) entry mechanism is cell type-specific as B cells and a number of cell lines examined do not respond to PI(3,4,5)P(3) stimulation. Second, inhibition of PI 3-kinase by wortmannin and by overexpression of the dominant negative inhibitor Deltap85 suppresses anti-CD3-induced Ca(2+) response, which could be reversed by subsequent …

A study was conducted on 18 older adult pet owners and non-pet owners residing in a mobile home park to determine self-perception of health status and the level of attachment to pets. Self-reported health status was high and equal for both pet owners and non-pet owners. The level of attachment to the pets was also high. Studies have demonstrated human-animal interactions being beneficial to both individuals and families; but for many residents of mobile home parks and common interest developments, such as condominiums and townhouses, rules prevent companion animal ownership. The efflux of potassium (K⁺) and amino acids from hippocampal slices was measured after sudden exposure to 10% (270 mOsm), 25% (225 mOsm) or 50% (150 mOsm) hyposmotic solutions or after gradual decrease (22.5 mOsm/min) in external osmolarity. In slices suddenly exposed to 50% hyposmotic solutions, swelling was followed by partial (74%) cell volume recovery, suggesting regulatory volume decrease (RVD). With gradual hyposmotic changes, no increase in cell water content was observed even when the solution at the end of the experiment was 50% hyposmotic, showing the occurrence of isovolumic regulation (IVR). • Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDA) remains a deadly disease with a 5-year survival of 8% for all stages combined (Siegel RL et al.). Currently, it’s the third leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the United States and by 2020 it is projected to become the second leading cause (Rahib L, et al).

Therapy is inundated with self-report instruments/measures for clients (Corcoran & Fischer, 1987)(Touliatos, Perlmutter, & Straus, 1989); most of them focused for individual therapy. Many of these instruments are used for assessment purposes, while some others are related to outcome (Fredman & Sherman, 1987) (Corcoran & Fischer, 1987). One neglected area is that of instruments devised to measure satisfaction with specific content areas oftherapy. Another neglected area is an instrument designed specifically for marital/couple therapy. This study used a quasi-experimental design to evaluate the outcomes of a continence program in a rehabilitation center with patients receiving therapies (N=l2) and to evaluate the knowledge and attitudes of the rehabilitation staff (N=27) before and after reviewing a teaching module about urinary incontinence. Roy's adaptation theory was used as the conceptual framework for this research project. The tools used for data collection were: the Functional Independence Measure {FIM), daily 24 hour incontinence logs, pre/post true and false knowledge tests and pre/post staff attitude questionnaires. Depression in adolescence is a common and potentially life-threatening health problem. Depending upon the severity of symptoms, anywhere from 2% to 40% of teenagers are affected with depression (Sadler, 1993). The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effects of prevention strategies on decreasing the rate of depression in adolescents. It is hoped that a class addressing specific skills identified as having an impact on adolescent depression will affect the youth participating in the program.

Novice nurse practitioners (NP) face unique obstacles to practice. Few studies examine factors influencing early NP clinical performance. Therefore, this research project analyzed data obtained from 243 members of an NP professional organization, who were asked to identify barriers encountered within the first 3 years of practice. Responses were received from beginning and more experienced NPs. The top 3 barriers named were lack of public knowledge, lack of positions for NPs, and a lower salary than anticipated. People from different cultural backgrounds have different beliefs and perceptions concerning health and illness. Differing illness beliefs between health professionals and patients may result in conflicting expectations regarding treatment choice and outcome. This non-experimental research was designed to explore illness attribution among Caucasian, Hispanics, and Asians with chronic or acute illness. The results suggest that there was no significant difference in illness attribution beliefs between the three ethnic groups; however, primary language, years spent in U.S., and educational backgrounds were associated with differences in illness attribution. Treatment of B16 mouse melanoma cells with all-trans-retinoic acid (ATRA) results in inhibition of cell proliferation and induction of differentiation. Accompanying these events is an induction of retinoic acid receptor β (RARβ) expression, an increase in protein kinase Cα (PKCα) expression, and enhanced activator protein-1 (AP-1) transcriptional activity. These cells express nuclear RARα and RARγ and nuclear retinoid X receptors (RXR) α and β constitutively. We tested the ability of receptor-selective retinoids to induce the biochemical changes found in ATRA-treated melanoma cells and also tested their effectiveness in decreasing anchorage-dependent and -independent growth. The purpose of this qualitative evaluation study was to determine how an educational program provided to nursing students changed their perceptions of the care they provided to Jewish clients. A teaching program on Jewish beliefs and culture was given to ten baccalaureate nursing students who were providing care to Jewish older adults through one of the university's Academic Nurse Managed Centers. The teaching program was given early in the semester and students were interviewed four and eight weeks later to determine how the teaching program influenced their interactions with clients. Three major themes emerged from the interview data: a) increased …

Background - Although medical textbooks usually classify fasting plasma glucose <70 or 80 mg/dL (<3.89 or 4.44 mmol/L) as abnormal, the prognosis for patients with low fasting plasma glucose is unclear.

Methods and Results - We conducted prospective cohort studies among 40,069 men and women to investigate the association between fasting plasma glucose levels and cardiovascular disease and all-cause mortality. We documented a U-shaped relation between fasting plasma glucose and mortality. In addition to diabetes and impaired fasting glucose levels, low fasting plasma glucose levels were also associated with high morality. After multivariate adjustment for age, sex, study population, ethnicity, current smoking status, high blood pressure, total cholesterol, body mass index, triglycerides, history of cardiovascular disease and cancer, and a family …

The purpose of this research is to examine the role that selected demographic and background factors play in identifying the attitudes that African American college students express towards individuals with disabilities. Attitudes can come from variety of sources such as the student's own culture (Belgrave, 1998; Kambon, 1992; Grand & Strohmer, 1983; Olkin & Howson, 1994); gender of the individual with the disability (Alston & Mccowan, 1994; Boylan, 1991; Cole, 1998); and the type of disability that individual has (Boylan, 1991 ). Other attitudes can come from society.

วัตถุประสงค์ การศึกษานี้เป็นการศึกษาเปรียบเทียบค่ากําลังตัดขวางและค่าความสามารถในการดัดงอของอะคริ ลิกเรซินชนิดกระตุ้นปฏิกิริยาโพลิเมอร์ด้วยความร้อนและสารเคมีจํานวน 10 ชนิด ซึ่งมีจําหน่ายในประเทศไทยเพื่อ ที่จะเป็นแนวทางในการเลือกใช้อะคริลิกกับงานชนิดต่างๆ ได้อย่างเหมาะสม วัสดุและวิธีการ นําอะครีลิกเรซินชนิดกระตุ้นปฏิกิริยาโพลิเมอร์ด้วยความร้อนจํานวน 7 ชนิด ได้แก่ Rodex, Majorbase, How medica, Meliodent, G.C Luxon, Takilon ชนิดใสและ Lang และอะครีลิกเรซินชนิดกระตุ้น ปฏิกิริยาโพลิเมอร์ด้วยสารเคมีจํานวน 3 ชนิด ได้แก่ ผลิตภัณฑ์ Meliodent, How medica และ Orthoresin มา ทดสอบหาค่ากําลังตัดขวาง และค่าความสามารถในการตัดงอ โดยทําชิ้นตัวอย่างให้ได้ตามมาตรฐาน ISO R-1567 สร้างชิ้นตัวอย่างชนิดละ 5 ชิ้น แล้วนําไปทดสอบโดยใช้เครื่องทดสอบ ลอยด์ ยูนิเวอร์ซัล รุ่น 10K นําค่าที่ได้ไปศึกษาหา ค่าความแตกต่างทางสถิติโดยใช้การวิเคราะห์ความแปรปรวนแบบทางเดียว ผลการศึกษา อะครีลิกเรซินชนิดกระตุ้นปฏิกิริยาโพลิเมอร์ด้วยความร้อน ผลิตภัณฑ์ Rodex มีค่ากําลังตัดขวางและ ค่าความสามารถในการดัดงอก่อนหักสูงกว่าอะครีลิกเรซินทั้งหมดที่นํามาทดสอบอย่างมีนัยสําคัญทางสถิติ และมีค่า ความสามารถในการดัดงอสูงที่สุดแต่ไม่แตกต่างจากผลิตภัณฑ์ Lang อย่างมีนัยสําคัญทางสถิติ (P<0.05) และ อะครีลิกเรซิน ผลิตภัณฑ์ Meliodent มีค่ากําลังตัดขวาง อะครีลิกเรซินชนิดกระตุ้นปฏิกิริยาโพลิเมอร์ด้วยสารเคมีและค่าความสามารถในการดัดงอก่อนหักสูงสุดในกลุ่มของ สรุป อะครีลิกเรซินที่มีขายในประเทศไทยมีหลายชนิด แต่ละชนิดมีค่ากําลังตัดขวางและความสามารถในการถูกตัดงอแตกต่างกัน ทันตแพทย์ควรเลือกใช้ให้เหมาะสม

สมัยก่อนการซ่อมพอร์สเลนมักไม่ค่อยประสบความสําเร็จเนื่องจากมีการแตกหักของคอมโพสิตเรซินจากการเชื่อมที่ไม่ดีพอ แต่ในปัจจุบันผลิตภัณฑ์ในการซ่อมพอร์สเลนได้พัฒนาขึ้นมาก โดยการใช้ คอมโพสิตเรซินที่มีการเชื่อมกับผิวโลหะหรือพอร์สเลนด้วยการยึดทางกลศาสตร์และทางเคมีซึ่งมีความสําคัญมาก การใช้สารไซเลนเป็นตัวเชื่อมด้วยระบบซิลิโคทเตอร์ร่วมกับสารเชื่อมซึ่งเป็นผลิตภัณฑ์จากบริษัทต่างๆ ทําให้การซ่อมพอร์สเลนที่แตกใช้ งานได้นานขึ้น วัตถุประสงค์ของบทความนี้เพื่อให้ทราบถึงวิธีการเตรียมพื้นผิวพอร์สเลนและโลหะในรูปแบบต่างๆ เช่น การใช้หัวกรอ การเป่าทราย การใช้กรดกัด การใช้สารเชื่อม ซึ่งมีผลต่อการเชื่อมติดกับคอมโพสิตเรซิน รวมทั้งชนิดของคอมโพสิตเรซิน และวิธีการซ่อมพอร์สเลนในปากเมื่อเกิดการแตกของพอร์สเลนซึ่งมีหลายระดับขึ้นกับพื้นผิวของครอบฟันบริเวณที่ซ่อมเป็นอย่างไร แต่ถ้ามีการแตกมากขึ้นต้องทําขั้นตอนในห้องปฏิบัติการทําเป็นครอบฟันคร่อมทับบนโครงโลหะและยึดด้วยซีเมนต์

วัตถุประสงค์ เพื่อศึกษาเปรียบเทียบการอธิบายส่วนต่างๆ ของศีรษะและใบหน้า ระหว่างนิสิตทันตแพทย์และ บุคคลทั่วไป วัสดุและวิธีการ กลุ่มตัวอย่างประกอบด้วยอาสาสมัครสองกลุ่ม คือ นิสิตฝึกปฏิบัติงานคลินิก คณะทันตแพทย ศาสตร์ จํานวน 70 คน และบุคคลทั่วไปที่มีการศึกษาระดับปริญญาตรีสาขาใดๆ ที่ไม่เคยผ่านการศึกษาวิชามหกาย วิภาคศาสตร์ จํานวน 82 คน ทําแบบทดสอบอธิบายส่วนต่างๆ ของศีรษะและใบหน้าจากภาพ โดยมีกิจกรรมต่างๆ ดังนี้ 1. ลากเส้นโยงชื่อไปยังตําแหน่งที่ถูกต้อง 2. บอกชื่ออวัยวะหรือตําแหน่งที่ลูกศรชี้ 3. ระบายสีให้ได้บริเวณของ อวัยวะหรือตําแหน่งที่กําหนด และ 4. (เฉพาะนิสิตทันตแพทย์) บอกชื่อทางกายวิภาคศาสตร์ของตําแหน่งที่กําหนด ผลการศึกษา พบว่า กลุ่มตัวอย่างทั้งสองระบุส่วนต่างๆ ของศีรษะและใบหน้าเหมือนกันในตําแหน่งต่อไปนี้คือ กกหู แก้ม ขมับ ติ่งหู หน้าผาก หน้าหู หลังหู หว่างคิ้ว โหนกแก้ม และกราม แต่แตกต่างกันในการชี้ภาพและ ระบายสีบอกบริเวณในตําแหน่งของข้อต่อขากรรไกร ขากรรไกร และมุมคาง รวมทั้งเรียกชื่อต่างกันอย่างมีนัยสําคัญ ในส่วนที่ตรงกับมุมของขากรรไกรล่าง ยิ่งหน้าหู และหน้าต่อรูหู 13 มิลลิเมตร (p<0.001) ทั้งนี้กลุ่มนิสิตทันตแพทย์ ได้แสดงว่ามีความรู้ทางมหกายวิภาคศาสตร์อย่างดี (ร้อยละ 90.1) สรุป นิสิตทันตแพทย์และบุคคลทั่วไปอธิบายส่วนต่างๆ ของศีรษะและใบหน้าเหมือนกันในตําแหน่งหรือบริเวณที่ มองเห็น และ/หรือรู้จักเป็นคําสามัญ แต่แตกต่างกันในบริเวณซึ่งต้องการความรู้ทางกายวิภาคศาสตร์ ได้แก่ ข้อต่อ ขากรรไกร และส่วนของขากรรไกร ดังนั้นทันตแพทย์จึงควรระมัดระวังในการสื่อสารกับผู้ป่วยเกี่ยวกับความเจ็บป่วย ของบริเวณเหล่านี้
