The purpose of this study was to examine the knowledge and attitudes of advanced practice nurses regarding pain and pain management, and to determine if a relationship existed between education, experience, clinical specialty, and recent educational sessions on pain management, and scores on the Nurses’ Knowledge and Attitudes Survey. The convenience sample consisted of 78 advanced practice nurses or advanced practice nursing students in west Michigan. Data were collected via the use of mailed questionnaires. Dorothea Orem’s self-care deficit theory of nursing provided the theoretical framework for this study.

This study explored Reed’s theory of self-transcendence as a potential developmental resource and correlate of well-being within the long term care population. Self-transcendence is a healthy maturation process of expanding one’s conceptual boundaries inwardly through increased self-understanding; outwardly through investing in relationships with others and the environment; and/or temporally by integrating perceptions of one’s past and future in a way that enhances the present. A descriptive correlational research design examined the level of self-transcendence and the relationship of self-transcendence to depression among nursing home residents. The sample of 51 oldest-old adults ranged from 80 to 103 years old.

This study used semi-structured individual interviews and qualitative analysis to gather information from six people with disabilities concerning their experience with and opinion of home modifications. A descriptive correlational design was used to examine the relationship between the level of social support and the perceived quality of life (QOL) of the patient following coronary artery bypass surgery (CABS) one year after the procedure. A total of 212 surveys were sent to the homes of former patients admitted to a mid-western hospital and 90 were returned. The Personal Resource Questionnaire (PRQ-85) was used to measure social support and the Quality of Life Index-Cardiac Version (QLI) was used to measure QOL.

Perceived Health Status, Preventive Health Behaviors, Formal Education, And Potential Barriers To Health Care In A Rural Population, Tori Renee Gaultier

The purpose of this study was to examine preventive health behaviors, perceived health status, level of formal education, and potential barriers to health care in a rural northern mid-westem state using Leininger’s Cultural Care Theory. A short questionnaire was designed to identify factors that may influence health for rural residents. The sample consisted of 159 adults. The questionnaires were hand delivered to 299 randomly selected homes. Analysis was performed using descriptive and Chi-square statistics. The results supported an association between fewer preventive health behaviors and more potential barriers to health care (χ₂ = 36.72, p < .001). A higher level of formal education was associated with higher perceived health status (χ₂ = 13.99, p < .001). Potential barriers to health care were not found to be associated with lower perceived health status.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of zinc supplementation in reducing the incidence of recurrent bacterial vaginosis (BY) and vulvovaginal candidiasis (W C ). Forty-one subjects were selected from researcher’s patients based on at least two episodes of vaginitis in a six-month period. A control group (placebo) and an experimental group (30 mg zinc gluconate) were randomly formed from this selection.

Evaluation of vaginitis status was accomplished through wet mounts, pH test, and KOH whiff tests at the initial, 3, and 6-month intervals. Subjects sought treatment for vaginitis when symptomatic.

Calcium And Phosphate Excretion In Preeclampsia, Pervi̇n Vural, Cemi̇l Akgül, Mukaddes Canbaz

In preeclampsia, alterations in renal function, electrolyte and water metabolism are common findings. Recent studies have suggested that preeclampsia is associated with hypocalciuria. A total of 59 women were included in the present study, 15 of whom were nonpregnant (NP) healthy women, 20 normotensive pregnant women (NTP), and 24 pregnant women with severe preeclampsia (PEP). We compared the three groups in terms of calcium and phosphate excretion, and some parameters of renal function such as serum urea, creatinine and creatinine clearance. Urinary calcium and phosphate levels in the PEP group were significantly lower than in the NP group (p< 0.001 and p< 0.01, respectively) and NTP group (p< 0.001 and p< 0.01, respectively). The serum urea levels were higher in the PEP group than in the NP and NTP (p< 0.001) groups. The same pattern of increase in the PEP group was valid for serum creatinine concentrations as compared with the NP (p< 0.01) and NTP (p< 0.001) levels. The glomerular filtration rate measured by creatinine clearance was lower in preeclamptic women than in normotensive pregnant women (p< 0.01). Patients with preeclampsia had significantly lower (p< 0.001) excretion of calcium than the NP and NTP groups (p< 0.001). Likewise, the phosphate levels were lower in women with preeclampsia than in the NP and NTP groups (p< 0.01). There was no correlation between parameters of renal function and calcium or phosphate excretion. Hypocalciuria and hypophosphateuria were found to be important features of severe preeclampsia and probably indirectly are related to the altered renal function seen in toxemia of pregnancy.

The effects of repeated halothane anaesthesia on 6-10 week old male, Mus musculus albino mice weighing 29-32 g were studied. Halothane, a widely used anaesthetic, is known to be metabolised in the liver to toxic intermediates through cytochrome P4502E1 (CYP2E1). During the first week of repeated dosage, glucose-6- phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PDH) activity decreased in both erythrocytes and liver cells, and during this time, livers increased significantly in weight and suffered histopathological damage, the damage increasing with the dosage of halothane, in the range 0.25-1.0 ml twice daily. This prospective study was designed to investigate lymphocyte subsets in acute post-streptococcal glomerulonephritis (APSGN). Peripheral blood lymphocytes were analyzed using fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC) labeled CD3, CD4, CD8, CD14, CD19, CD45, CD56, CD45RA and CDW29 monoclonal antibodies by flow cytometry. Twenty patients aged 14-22 years who fulfilled the diagnostic criteria for APSGN were evaluated during the 1st and 12th weeks of the of disease. A great deal of attention has been devoted to understanding the changes in fiscal policies that "must" take place to accommodate these changes. In contrast, less effort has been concentrated on studying the fiscal shifts that will endogenously result from demographic pressures. An example of particular interest is the degree to which a more elderly population will support public spending for education. This study investigated improvement of reading comprehension and listening comprehension in school-aged students in first through third grades at two different elementary schools. Approximately half of the students at each school received collaborative classroom-based language lessons from the teacher and speech-language pathologist. The other half of the students at each school received regular instruction from the classroom teacher without input from the speech-language pathologist. The speech-language pathologist provided services to the students with speech or language IEP goals in the collaborative classrooms primarily in the classroom during these language lessons. The transition from a planktonic (free-swimming) existence to growth attached to a surface in a biofilm occurs in response to environmental factors, including the availability of nutrients. We show that the catabolite repression control (Crc) protein, which plays a role in the regulation of carbon metabolism, is necessary for biofilm formation in Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Using phase-contrast microscopy, we found that a crc mutant only makes a dispersed monolayer of cells on a plastic surface but does not develop the dense monolayer punctuated by microcolonies typical of the wild-type strain. Auto-inhibition is a common transcriptional control mechanism that is well characterized in the regulatory transcription factor Ets-1. Autoinhibition of Ets-1 DNA binding works through an inhibitory module that exists in two conformations. DNA binding requires a change in the inhibitory module from the packed to disrupted conformation. This structural switch provides a mechanism to tightly regulate Ets-1 DNA binding. We report that the Ets-1 partner protein core-binding factor α2 (CBFα2; also known as AML1 or PEBP2) stimulates Ets-1 DNA binding and counteracts auto-inhibition. Congestive heart failure (CHF) is prevalent and patients with CHF incur costly hospital readmissions. It is crucial to reduce rehospitalizations and improve self-care in these patients. This blind experimental study based on Dorothea Orem’s self-care deficit theory evaluated two nursing interventions provided to 49 home care patients with CHF from 42 to 94 years of age in western Michigan. The theoretical framework used for this study was based on Prochaska and DiClemente’s (1983) Transtheoretical Model. The purpose of the study was to determine if there is a relationship between stage of change (pre-contemplation, contemplation, preparation, action, maintenance) and perceived self-efficacy regarding exercise among low risk pregnant women. Data was obtained through a survey of 140 low risk pregnant women from two private obstetricians’ offices. Participants were between 18 and 43 years old and primarily Caucasian (75%) and high school educated (85%).
