The Relationship Between Grandparent Caregiver Reactions And Support Group Participation, Karen F. Rishel

The purpose of this study was to determine if there was a relationship between support group participation by grandparent caregivers and reactions to their care-giving situation. There were 25 grandparents primarily Caucasian, and from rural areas or small towns. All were high school graduates and nearly half attended college. A descriptive correlational design was used, and the conceptual framework was Dowdell's adaptation of Given's model on caregiver strain.

No correlations were found that were statistically significant between the number of groups attended and the sub-scales of Given's Caregiver Reaction Assessment. This may have been related to the sample size. Although …

Long-term effects of angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibition and metabolic control in hypertensive type 2 diabetic patients. Background. In hypertensive type 2 diabetic patients, treatment with angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors is associated with a lower incidence of cardiovascular events than those treated with calcium channel-blocking agents. However, the long-term renal effects of ACE inhibitors in these patients remain inconclusive. In 1989, we commenced a placebo-controlled, double-blind, randomized study to examine the anti-albuminuric effects of enalapril versus nifedipine (slow release) in 102 hypertensive, type 2 diabetic patients. These patients have been followed up for a mean trial duration of 5.5 ± 2.2 years. …

Une démarche préventive a été initiée dans les écoles, en mars 1998, par le ministère de l'Éducation du Québec (MEQ) et le ministère de la Santé et des Services Sociaux (MSSS), afin d'évaluer les possibilités d'exposition à l'amiante. Un critère de gestion de 0, 01 fé¹/mL a été retenu par le MSSS pour identifier des sources possibles d'émission de fibres dans l'air des édifices publics.

Dans les usines d'abattage et de transformation du porc, l'utilisation du couteau est intensive et son entretien par un bon affilage sur le fusil (lime) est nécessaire afin de maintenir pendant le travail, la qualité de coupe de la lame. Plusieurs études ont permis de constater que les travailleurs dans ce secteur d'emploi éprouvent des difficultés à maintenir leur couteau bien tranchant. En plus de réaliser le travail, les membres des ESA assument des responsabilités qui sont dévolues aux contremaîtres ou superviseurs de premier niveau dans les organisations traditionnelles. Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is the leading cause of disability in the world. This was a descriptive study implemented through a survey which gathered information on epidemiology, demographics, service delivery, and the role of the SLP in countries outside the United States. Contact persons were notified and asked to distribute surveys to health care professionals who work with TBI. The survey was completed by 14 individuals in 5 different countries. Countries included Brazil, Israel, Italy, South Africa, and United States.

Chickens and turkeys are routinely infected with the roundworms Ascaridia galli and A. dissimilis, respectively. The current study was conducted to gather basic information on these worms and to determine whether heterologous infections (chicken worms in turkeys and turkey worms in chickens) would be successful. Chickens and turkeys were obtained at day of hatch, brooded to 7 days of age, and placed in pens (25/pen) according to infection as received at 7 days of age: homologous, heterologous and control (no infection). Bird weights, mortalities, and feed efficiencies were monitored for 3 weeks postinfection, at which time all birds were killed …

Earobics Pro PLUS Step I (Earobics I) is a software program designed to increase the auditory processing and phonological awareness skills of children when used in conjunction with traditional intervention. Phonological awareness is the ability to manipulate the sounds of a language and has been shown in previous studies to have a strong relationship with reading ability. Phonological awareness can be taught, and studies have been conducted in an effort to determine effective methods for teaching phonological awareness. Little is known of the way that nurses' roles have evolved within a hospital setting in which efficient and affective interventions include caring for sicker patients. The emergence of the Patient Care Coordinator (PCC) is one role that nursing developed to participate in an interdisciplinary collaborative team approach to caring for sicker patients.

This qualitative study examined the exemplary role of eleven PCCs who practice in a regional nonprofit medical center. Research methodologies included interview, non-participant observation, and analysis of historical data. Individuals with severe nonfluent aphasia may lose functional verbal communication. With the loss of fluent speech, one may also lose the capacity to share in the casual conversation that enriches our lives. A rehabilitative course that seeks to stimulate restoration of verbal abilities can be lengthy with uncertain outcomes. Fortunately, Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) interventions have shown promise in treating aphasia by providing non-verbal means of communicating. The study was conducted at Alata Horticultural Research institute between 1994 and 1996. The aim of the study was to obtain a strong colony by way of supersedure and empty frames, feeding with saccharose syrup and encouraging egg laying of queen bees at the end of summer. According to the results, there were significant differences among treatments in terms of the development of colony population, brood rearing activity and honey yield. Treatments had no significant effect on wax building activity and swarming tendency.
