Pulmonary hypertension continues to be a major cause of morbidity and mortality, despite new treatments. Since inhaled nitric oxide has been reported to be effective in some cases, we investigated using nebulized nitroglycerine to treat pulmonary hypertension in children with congenital heart disease. Four children (ages 6-72 months) with severe pulmonary hypertension secondary to congenital heart disease (all with membranous ventricular septal defect, undergoing cardiac catheterization) were given 3 cc of nebulized normal saline over 10 min as placebo control, followed by nebulized nitroglycerine (20 micrograms/Kg in 3 cc normal saline). OBJECTIVES: To obtain preliminary estimates of the acceptance rate and the frequency of adverse outcomes, and to identify issues related to acceptance, associated with management of asymptomatic pediatric coin ingestion by home observation, in preparation for a large-scale prospective study.

METHODS: Scripted telephone follow-up of callers who had reported asymptomatic pediatric coin ingestions to one of five poison control centers six to 36 months previously, which had been managed by home observation.

RESULTS: Of the 67 callers enrolled, 41 (67%) reported contacting a physician regarding the coin ingestion, despite home observation instruction by poison control center personnel. Those who did …

Previous research has demonstrated the importance of social support resources for emotional well-being and health, few studies have explored the determinants of social support. A number of factors that can influence Mexican American adolescents' tendencies when seeking help have been studied. Variables such as acculturation, culturally shared beliefs or values, social support systems, and self-esteem may help to better understand such behaviors.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of acculturation on perceived social support by adolescents. Specifically, we examine the extent to which gender, acculturation, and age influenced perceived social support of adolescents.

The purpose of this research is to investigate the application of a Compton scatter imaging technique to measure bone density. A demonstration Multiplexed Compton Scatter Tomograph (MCST) was assembled to demonstrate the feasibility of detecting osteoporosis by modifying a system originally designed to detect hidden corrosion in aluminum aircraft wings. Measurements were performed on an aluminum phantom representing a wrist bone containing varying densities in the center and varying thickness of the cortical shell. The densities in the center are comparable to normal trabecular bone, sixty-percent of normal trabecular bone and a void. The MCST images of the phantom were …

Background: This study investigates the role of CT and MR imaging in the diagnosis and management of young stroke patients.

Methods: CT scan findings of 108 patients and MR findings of 30 patients between 15-45 years of age were reviewed retrospectively. The variables included the territory of infarct on CT and MR imaging, the cortical distribution and size of infarct.

Results: About 80% of the patients had infarcts of the carotid territory and 20% the vertebro-basilar distribution. More than half of the infarcts were cortical (56%). The yield of MR imaging was much higher for deeper structures such …

Porcine pulmonary intravascular macrophages (PIMs) have been recently known for their role of pulmonary surveillance. In the past few years, we have been investigating the role of PIMs in porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) infection. PRRSV antigen has been demonstrated in PIMs both in vitro and in vivo. PRRSV-infected PIMs reveal viral particles that tend to accumulate in the smoothed-wall vesicles and yield a high virus titer. The PRRSV infection induces either apoptosis or cell lysis. The bactericidal activity of in vitro PRRSV infected PIMs is significantly decreased and the phagocytic activity is questionable as the pulmonary copper …

การวิจัยครั้งนี้มีจุดประสงค์เพื่อศึกษาวิธีการชะล้างมดลูกด้วยน้ําเกลือผสมยาปฏิชีวนะอ๊อกซี่เตตร้า ซัยคลิน และผลต่ออัตราการผสมติดหลังการรักษาเปรียบเทียบกับกลุ่มควบคุม พบว่าในฟาร์มโคนมรายย่อย โคนมผสมซ้ำที่ได้รับการรักษาโดยวิธีนี้ สามารถติดตั้งท้องภายหลังการผสมเทียมแล้ว 3 ครั้งมากกว่ากลุ่ม เปรียบเทียบ อย่างมีนัยสำคัญทางสถิติ (P<0.05) กล่าวคือ โคกลุ่มรักษา จำนวน 39 ตัว ตั้งท้อง 22 ตัว (56.4%) และโคกลุ่มควบคุม จำนวน 39 ตัว ตั้งท้อง 12 ตัว (30.8%) ผลการทดลองแก้ไขการผสมซ้ำใน ฟาร์มโคนมขนาดใหญ่ พบว่าให้ผลการรักษาได้ดี กล่าวคือในโคนมที่มีปัญหาผสมซ้ำ 12 ใน 19 ตัว (63.2%) พบว่าตั้งท้องภายหลังการรักษาแล้วเฉลี่ย 47 วัน (พิสัย 5-157 วัน) โดย 6 ตัว ติดตั้งท้องจากการผสมครั้งแรก การตรวจแยกเชื้อในมดลูกโคผสมซ้ำ 59 ตัวพบเชื้อแบคทีเรียในโค 48 ตัว (81.4 %) จำนวน 56 strains ส่วนใหญ่เป็นแบคทีเรียที่ไม่ทำให้เกิดโรค (non-pathogenic) และไม่น่าจะเป็นสาเหตุสำคัญของปัญหาการ ผสมซ้ำในโคนม ผลการวิจัยครั้งนี้แสดงว่าการรักษาโคนมที่มีปัญหาผสมซ้ำโดยวิธีการชะล้างมดลูก ด้วยน้ำเกลือผสมยาปฏิชีวนะ สามารถแก้ไขให้โคนั้นติดตั้งท้องได้ดีในระยะเวลาสั้นภายหลังที่ได้รับการผสมเทียม และควรอบรมและส่งเสริมให้เจ้าหน้าที่และนายสัตวแพทย์นำวิธีการนี้ไปปฏิบัติภาคสนาม

เก็บเอมบริโอสุกรระยะบลาสโตซิส (อายุ 6-7 วัน) จำนวน 106 เอมบริโอ จากสุกรสาวที่เหนี่ยวนำ การเป็นสัด โดยแบ่งเอมบริโอตามขนาดเส้นผ่าศูนย์กลาง ออกเป็น 3 กลุ่ม คือ เอมบริโอขนาดเล็ก (100<Ф≤200um) เอมบริโอขนาดกลาง (200<Ф≤400um) และเอมบริโอขนาดใหญ่ (0-400um) นำเอมบริโอที่สมบูรณ์มาทําการ แช่แข็งด้วยวิธีวิทริฟิเคชั่นในน้ำยา VS3a ประเมินผลการแช่แข็งเอมบริโอจากคุณภาพหลังการละลาย โดย แบ่งคุณภาพออกเป็น 3 เกรด คือ เอมบริโอเกรด เอ บี และ ซี พบว่า เอมบริโอขนาดเล็ก กลาง และใหญ่ มีอัตราการเก็บได้ หลังทำละลาย เท่ากับ 93.8% (30/32) 95.1% (39/41) และ 100% (33/33) เฉลี่ยเท่ากับ 96.2%(102/106) และได้เอมบริโอหลังการละลายที่มีคุณภาพดี (เกรด เอ และบี) เท่ากับ 53.3% (16/30) 84.9% (28/33) และ 87.2% (34/39) ตามลำดับ เฉลี่ยเท่ากับ 76.5% (78/102) จากผลการศึกษาพบว่าเอมบริโอขนาดใหญ่และขนาดกลางมีคุณภาพของเอมบริโอหลังการละลายดีกว่าเอมบริโอขนาดเล็ก (P<0.05)

กลุ่มอาการโรคไตที่มีภาวะโปรตีนในปัสสาวะสูงและโปรตีนในเลือดต่ำกว่าปกติ ร่วมกับมีอาการบวมน้ำในสุนัข (Nephrotic Syndrome), รสมา ภู่สุนทรธรรม, สุภัทรา ยงศิริ, อนุศักดิ์ กิจถาวรรัตน์

สุนัขพันธุ์ผสมเพศผู้ อายุ 7 ปี น้ำหนัก 25 กิโลกรัม เข้ารับการรักษาที่โรงพยาบาลสัตว์เล็ก คณะ สัตวแพทยศาสตร์ จุฬาลงกรณ์มหาวิทยาลัย ด้วยอาการอาเจียนเป็นเลือด มีกลิ่นแอมโมเนียจากปาก ดื่มน้ำมาก ปัสสาวะมาก ซึม เบื่ออาหารและน้ำหนักลด จากการตรวจร่างกายทั่วไปพบอาการบวมน้ำที่ขาหลังทั้ง สองข้าง เยื่อเมือกซีดและอยู่ในสภาพขาดน้ำ ส่งตัวอย่างเลือดตรวจค่าทางโลหิตวิทยาและค่าทางเคมีคลินิก พบภาวะโลหิตจางมีระดับยูเรียและสารประกอบไนโตรเจนในเลือดสูงรวมทั้งระดับครีอาทินินในเลือดสูงกว่าปกติ มีอนินทรีย์ฟอสเฟตในเลือดสูง มีอัลบูมินในเลือดต่ําและมีระดับของค่าโคเลสเตอรอลในเลือดสูง ผลการ ตรวจปัสสาวะทางห้องปฏิบัติการตรวจพบความผิดปกติของไต มีอัตราส่วนระหว่างโปรตีนกับครีอาทินินในปัสสาวะสูงกว่าปกติ ดำเนินการรักษาทางยาร่วมกับการให้สารน้ำพบว่าในระยะแรกสุนัขมีอาการดีขึ้นตามลำดับ สุนัขมีอาการทรุดลงในวันที่ 71 ของการรักษาและเสียชีวิตในเวลาต่อมา จากอาการทางคลินิกร่วมกับผลการ ตรวจทางห้องปฏิบัติการและการชันสูตรซากสุนัขป่วยรายนี้บ่งชี้ถึงกลุ่มอาการโรคไตที่มีภาวะโปรตีนในปัสสาวะ สูงและโปรตีนในเลือดต่ำกว่าปกติร่วมกับมีอาการบวมน้ำเนื่องจากการสะสมของสารอะมัยลอยด์ที่ไต

โรคไข้หัดสุนัข (Canine Distemper : CD) เกิดจากเชื้อไวรัสไข้หัดสุนัข Canine Distemper Virus (CDV) ซึ่งอยู่ในกลุ่ม Morbillivirus ทำให้เกิดโรคได้ในสุนัขและสัตว์อื่นที่มีอยู่ในตระกูลเดียวกันกับสุนัข (carnivores) ในสุนัขพบอาการได้ทั้งชนิดเฉียบพลันและเรื้อรังที่ระบบทางเดินหายใจ ทางเดินอาหาร และระบบ ประสาท โดยมีอัตราการตายค่อนข้างสูง ลูกสุนัขส่วนใหญ่จะมีความไวต่อไวรัสชนิดนี้ ช่วงอายุที่พบคือ ระหว่าง 6-12 สัปดาห์ โดยทั่วไปจะทําการรักษาตามอาการเพื่อให้ร่างกายสุนัขสามารถสร้างภูมิคุ้มกันได้เอง การควบคุมโรคจะใช้วิธีป้องกันด้วยการฉีดวัคซีน วัคซีนที่ใช้เป็นชนิดเชื้อเป็น (attennuated vaccine) ซึ่งนิยม เริ่มฉีดวัคซีนป้องกันโรคไข้หัดสุนัขเข็มแรกที่อายุ 2 เดือนขึ้นไป เพื่อหลีกเลี่ยงการรบกวนการสร้างภูมิคุ้มกัน ที่มีผลมาจากภูมิคุ้มกันจากแม่ อย่างไรก็ตามปัญหาที่ยังคงพบคือลูกสุนัขก่อนนำมาฉีดวัคซีนเข็มแรก หรือหลังฉีดวัคซีนเข็มแรกแล้วไม่นานยังคงปรากฏอาการของโรคไข้หัดสุนัข ซึ่งเป็นไปได้ว่าลูกสุนัขก่อนทำการ ฉีดวัคซีนเมื่ออายุ 2 เดือนนั้น ภูมิคุ้มกันจากแม่ต่อโรคไข้หัดสุนัขอาจลดลงแล้วหรือไม่มี จึงทำให้ลูกสุนัขอาจไวต่อการติดเชื้อไวรัสดังกล่าวได้

Welfare Reform And Its Impact On Medicaid: An Update, Judith D. Moore

Welfare reform, enacted in the Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Reconciliation Act of 1996 (PRWORA), had a profound impact on the Medicaid program, delinking Medicaid from the new TANF program and for the first time allowing Medicaid eligibility to be divorced from welfare status. This paper reviews the national impact of this decoupling, describing research, implementation activities, and the impact of new state welfare programs on health programs in general.

Trypanosome infection rate in cattle at Nguruman was investigated in a study conducted in 1984-1986. Shifting pastoralism significantly reduced trypanosome infections in cattle. The cattle were more heavily infected with Trypanosoma congolense (16.5%) than Trypanosoma vivax (4.95%) and Trypanosoma brucei (0.19%). Trypanosoma theileri was observed only once among the cattle examined. Mixed trypanosome infections in cattle were observed to be 2.75% and 0.014% for T. congolense/T. vivax and T. congolense/T. brucei, respectively. The duration of infection in the cattle was 55 days for T. congolense and 79 days for T. vivax. High infections in cattle were observed 2 months after …

In December 1998, a 31-year-old male (the victim) sawmill employee was killed when struck by a log that rolled off the top of the truck. He was preparing the truck to be unloaded when the log rolled off. While most of the logs received by the sawmill were delivered by independent loggers, the company did own one boom truck that their employees used to pick up timber. This was the truck the victim was driving the day of the incident. At the time of the incident, he was working alone.

The impact that the perceived violence of a crime has on jury decision making has received much controversy lately. Violence may affect juries by how it is presented, as in the case of graphic evidence; its evidentiary purpose, as in establishing a history of violence in domestic abuse cases; and in sentencing, when the question of the heinousness of the crime is raised. Many judicial experts argue that evidence of violence may prejudice juries’ verdicts. There is also concern within the legal community that what constitutes a heinous crime cannot be objectively determined. Psychological research has only just begun to …

In October 1998, a 58-year-old male truck driver/yard worker died of traumatic head injuries when he fell 48" from a storage rack. The employee had climbed onto the storage rack to retrieve 3/4" round molding, 8 feet in length for a customer to load into his truck. The employee placed his feet on pine boards that were being stored on the middle row and was trying to retrieve molding being stored above (approximately 9 feet off the floor). Many parrotfishes (Scaridae) co-occur in mixed-species aggregations as juveniles, but diverge in resource use and social structure as adults. Focal observations of 3 juvenile parrotfishes (Scarus coeruleus, Sparisoma aurofrenatum, Sparisoma viride) were conducted on inshore patch reefs in the Florida Keys to examine feeding rates, food type, habitat use, and aggressive interactions. All species overlapped extensively in their use of space and food. Home ranges physically overlapped, and the proportion of microhabitats present within home ranges was similar for all species. Home range size increased with body size for S. coeruleus and S. aurofrenatum. Diets of all …

A method for specifying a fatty acid at the sn2 position of acylglycerol lipids including (a) transfecting a vector including the SLC1 gene or a variant thereof into embryonic biological material, and (b) allowing the SLC1 gene to specify the type of fatty acid at the sn2 position of acylglycerol lipids. Also provided for is an isolated SLC1 gene and a probe for its detection.

The invention provides a method for detecting the presence of Serpulina hyodysenteriae in a biological Sample, an oligonucleotide primer and an S. hyodysenteriae-specific oligonucleotide probe useful in that method, and an article of manufacture that contains the primers and/or probe. Also provided are an about 2.3-kb DNA fragment derived from genomic DNA of S. hyodysenteriae and encoding for an about 56 kDa polypeptide, a recombinant expression vector containing the DNA fragment, the 56 kDa polypeptide and a monoclonal antibody reactive with the peptide, and a method of assaying for antibodies reactive with the 56 kDa peptide.

In this introductory article, the purpose of the special issue on prosocial and moral development during early adolescence is presented. This issue is the first of two special issues and focuses on the role that individual processes play in influencing young adolescents’ prosocial and moral development. Presented also is a new meta-analysis of data on age and gender differences in prosocial behavior with particular focus on early adolescence. It was found that prosocial behavior during adolescence rarely has been studied, but that there are general increases in prosocial behavior during this time when compared with early age periods.
