Exoenzyme S (ExoS), an ADP-ribosylating enzyme produced by the opportunistic pathogen Pseudomonas aeruginosa, is directly translocated into eukaryotic cells by bacterial contact. Within the cell, ExoS ADP-ribosylates the cell signaling protein Ras and causes inhibition of DNA synthesis and alterations in cytoskeletal structure. To further understand the interrelationship of the different cellular effects of ExoS, functional analyses were performed on HT-29 epithelial cells after exposure to ExoS-producing P. aeruginosa 388 and the non-ExoS-producing strain 388DeltaS. Two different mechanisms of morphological alteration were identified: (i) a more-transient and less-severe cell rounding caused by the non-ExoS-producing strain 388DeltaS and (ii) a more-severe, …

Objective: To report the efficacy of FNAC in patients with thyroid disease.
Methods: Between January 1990 and December 1994 the records of all patients treated surgically for thyroid disease at ENT Head and Neck Surgery of Aga Khan University were reviewed. All the patients had pre­operative FNAC as the first line of evaluation and the histopathologist examined post-operative thyroid specimen.
Results: Forty-five patients (36 female and 9 male) had thyroid surgery. In 26 patients out of 45, FNAC was conclusive in diagnosing the nature of disease, while in 19 patients the FNAC was inconclusive because of the presence of follicular …

The objectives of embryo technologies development is to conserve the high genetic value swamp buffalo. Various fields of researches such as superovulation by gonadotropin hormone stimulation,. preimplantation embryonic development, embryo collection and transfer techniques, induction of twinning, cryopreservation of swamp buffalo embryos, follicular stimulation in prepubertal swamp buffalo calves and in vitro fertilization were well developped. Future studies in vitrification, embryo bank establishment, ovum pick up by ultrasounography and cloning technology are the field of interest in this species.

ศึกษาผลของการใช้เยื่อหุ้มไข่ขาวเย็บปิดแผลหลุมลึกที่กระจกตาในสุนัขทดลอง 5 ตัวที่ถูกทำให้ เกิดแผลหลุมลึกที่กระจกตาด้วย trephine ขนาดเส้นผ่าศูนย์กลาง 0.45 เซนติเมตร แล้วนำเยื่อหุ้มไข่ขาวมา เย็บติดกับกระจกตาด้วยวิธี simple interrupted และ figure of eight ทำการตรวจตาสุนัขทุกสัปดาห์เป็นเวลา 12 สัปดาห์ ผลการทดลองพบว่าสุนัขทุกตัวมีการอักเสบของเยื่อตาขาว มีน้ำตาไหล มีเส้นเลือดมาเลี้ยงที่ กระจกตา กระจกตาขุ่น กลัวแสง เยื่อหุ้มไข่ขาวหลุดออกจากกระจกตาระหว่างสัปดาห์ที่ 3-6 กระจกตาหายเป็นปกติและสัตว์สามารถมองเห็นได้ภายใน 6-10 สัปดาห์หลังผ่าตัด

Adenomatous polyposis coli (APC) mutations are present in >70% of colon cancers. The APC protein binds to beta-catenin (beta-cat), a protein first identified because of its role in E-cadherin (E-cad) cell adhesion. In some colon cancers lacking APC defects, mutations in presumptive glycogen synthase kinase 3beta phosphorylation sites near the beta-cat NH2 terminus appear to render beta-cat resistant to regulation by APC and glycogen synthase kinase 3beta. In cells with APC or beta-cat defects, beta-cat is stabilized and, in turn, binds to and activates T-cell factor (Tcf)/lymphoid enhancer factor (Lef) transcription factors. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of heat treatment on thermally activated nickel titanium archwires, and to determine the differences between wires from individual manufacturers. Thermally activated, nickel titanium wires were obtained from five different manufacturers in the 0.016 x 0.022 format. All wires were measured with a micrometer to determine their exact dimensions. Half of the wires were heat treated with the use of the Orthotherm Bending Art Programmer from Syrinx Medical Technologies (Berlin, Germany) while the other half served as a control. การรักษาโรคเยื่อตาขาวและกระจกตาอักเสบชนิดแห้ง (โรคกระจกตาแห้ง) ในสุนัข จำนวน 27 ตัว ทุกตัวมีอาการกลัวแสง เยื่อตาขาวและกระจกตาอักเสบ กระจกตาขุ่น มีขี้ตาขาว-เหลือง หรือสีเขียวที่ขอบตา มีเส้นเลือดมาที่กระจกตา บางตัวกระจกตามีเม็ดสีดำหรือน้ำตาลมาเกาะ บางตัวมีแผลหลุมตื้นที่กระจกตา สุนัขทุกตัวได้รับการรักษาโดยหยอดตาด้วยเจนต้ามายซิน ส่วนผสมของนีโอมายซิน โพลีมิกซิน และ เด็กซ่า เมทาโซล น้ำตาเทียม พิโลคาร์ปืน และ ไซคโลสโปริน เอ พร้อมทั้งให้กินวิตามินเอ และแอสไพริน หลังจาก ให้การรักษานานประมาณ 3-12 เดือน ปริมาณของน้ำตาที่เพิ่มขึ้นมีความแตกต่างอย่างมีนัยสำคัญทางสถิติ (P < 0.005) สุนัขทุกตัวมีอาการหายเป็นปกติ ยกเว้นเม็ดสีดำหรือน้ำตาลที่เกาะที่กระจกตา

Streptococcuus Suis Isolated From Pigs In The Central Region Of Thailand, Indhira Kramomtong, Jira Kongkrong, Tarika Pramoolsinsap

A total of 54 Streptococcus suis (S. suis) strains were isolated from 48 deceased pigs submitted for routine post mortem examination at the National Institute of Animal Health over a period of 1992-1995. The most isolations were from cases of meningitis and the less frequent ones were from septicemia, pneumonia, meningitis associated with pneumonia and abortion. A few strains were found in cases of arthritis, vaginitis, and abcessation. The age of pigs with meningitis was predominantly 4 - 8 weeks, while pigs with pneumonia were 5- 12 weeks old. Septicemia cases were usually seen in pigs aged 2 -14 weeks. …

จากการวัดระดับในซีรั่มของฮอร์โมนโปรเจสเตอโรน (P4) เอสตราไดออล (E2) คอร์ติซอล (C) ธัยรอกซิน (T4) และไตรไอโอโดธัยโรนีน (T3) ด้วยวิธีเรดิโออิมมิวโนเอสเสย์ ในวันที่ 0 (วันที่โคมีอาการเป็นสัด และได้รับการผสมเทียม) วันที่ 4 8 12 และ 16 ของวงจรการเป็นสัดก่อนและหลังการผสมเทียม ในโคนม พันธุ์ผสมกลุ่มผสมติดและกลุ่มผสมไม่ติด (จำนวนโค 5 ตัว ในแต่ละกลุ่มก่อนการผสมเทียม หลังการผสม เทียมโคกลุ่มผสมติดมีจำนวน 5 ตัว โคกลุ่มผสมไม่ติด มีจำนวน 2 ตัว) เมื่อวิเคราะห์ปัจจัยต่าง ๆ และ ปฏิกิริยาร่วมทางสถิติด้วยเจนเนอรัล ลิเนียร์ โมเดล และเปรียบเทียบค่าเฉลี่ยอีสท์สแควร์ พบว่าโคทั้งสอง กลุ่มมีระดับของโปรเจสเตอโรนต่ำสุด (P<0.01) ในวันที่ 0 ซึ่งไม่ต่างจากวันที่ 4 แต่โคกลุ่มผสมติดมีระดับ โปรเจสเตอโรนในวันที่ 8 12 และ 16 สูงกว่า โคกลุ่มผสมไม่ติด (P<0.01) โคกลุ่มผสมไม่ติดมีระดับของ เอสตราไดออลสูงกว่า (P<0.01) และระดับคอร์ติซอลมีแนวโน้มที่จะสูงกว่าโคกลุ่มผสมติด โคทั้งสองกลุ่มมี ระดับของธัยรอกซิน (P<0.01) และไตรไอโอโดธัยโรนีนสูงสุดในวันที่โคมีอาการเป็นสัด

Mental health of women is globally receiving particular attention. This study assessed community's view on certain aspects of women's mental health prior to introducing an intervention.

SETTING:

The study was conducted in an urban squatter settlement located in District West of Karachi in 1997 where the Aga Khan University has set up a Primary Health Care program in partnership with the communities.

METHODS:

Using convenient sampling, door to door household survey was conducted by medical students.

This study evaluates an integrated model of care for children with diabetes that was developed at an HMO. This model program of 56 subjects included a nurse case manager, a multidisciplinary team clinic, and educational and counseling interventions to empower families to improve self-management of the children's diabetes. The purpose of the program was to improve diabetes self-management as measured by pre- and postintervention glycosylated hemoglobin values, quality of life, and self-efficacy ratings. There were improvements in means of all measures of self-management and a statistically significant improvement in self-efficacy beliefs of the parents. The higher quality of life and …

The purpose of this study was to examine current practice behaviors of adult nurse practitioners when assessing and screening asymptomatic women over age 50 for breast cancer. Rosenstock's Health Model and Bandura's social learning theory guided this research. One hundred-fifty nurse practitioners were surveyed by questionnaire. Seventy-six surveys were completed and returned. Survey results revealed that those practitioners who had experienced breast cancer themselves were more aggressive in their screening and follow-up practices than those who had never had breast cancer. The communication of risk information is a fundamental aspect of nearly all health promotion interventions. However, no consensus exists regarding the most effective way to provide people with risk information. We will review and evaluate the relative merits of two approaches to risk communication. One approach relies on the presentation of numerical information regarding the probability of a health problem occurring, whereas the other relies on the presentation of information about the antecedents and consequences of a health problem.
