Endemic foci of human African trypanosomiasis are present in southern Sudan. In 1996 and 1997, trypanosomiasis increased sharply in Tambura County. To define the magnitude and geographic distribution of the outbreak, we conducted a prevalence survey using population-based cluster sampling in 16 villages: 1,358 participants answered questions about routine activities and tsetse fly contact and received serologic testing. Seroprevalence in the surveyed area was 19.4% (95% confidence interval = 16.9%, 21.8%). We confirmed infection in 66% of seropositive persons who received one parasitologic examination and in 95% of those who had serial examinations of lymph node fluid and blood. Activities …

Family conceptions of the nature of their relative's illness are part of the coping process and reveal the cultural construction of the illness experience. As part of a larger qualitative study conducted at the Schizophrenia Program of the Department of Psychiatry, Escola Paulista de Medicina - Unifesp, 14 relatives of 8 out-patients diagnosed with schizophrenia were interviewed and invited to talk freely about their ideas and feelings concerning their relative's problem. This Essay offers one analytic structure with which to approach the study of religious responses to cloning and suggests that, whereas the negative reactions are tied to a Frankenstein approach--that is, one which uses all the horror of that myth to express our fears about humans getting into the creation business--the more positive reactions express what I will call the Golem approach, based on a lesser-known legend.

To estimate the effect of exposure to tobacco dust on lipid parameters that increase the incidence of cardiovascular disease (CVD), 70 female workers were selected from the tobacco processing section of a tobacco plant, and 55 women were selected from the administration selection as the controls. The subjects were homogeneous in terms of primary and secondary risk factors such as age, alcohol intake, menstrual status, physical activity, diet, familial hyperlipidemia and heart disease. Tumor imaging with myocardial perfusion agents has been a focal point for researchers. A kinetic study with 99m Technetium- methoxyisobutylisonitrile ( 99m Tc-MIBI) was performed to evaluate the tumor uptake of this radiopharmaceutical in lung cancer. Thirty-five patients with lung cancer were studied. In 21 (60%) patients, there were regions of high uptake of 99m Tc-MIBI in the lesions. Heart/tumor (H/T), heart/lung (H/L) and tumor/lung (T/L) ratios were obtained. H/T and H/L ratios were 1.66±0.22 and 2.10±0.28 in 2-3 min, and 1.69±0.25 and 2.14±0.27 in 29-30 min respectively. In this study, we evaluated 39 patients, who had been followed up in various centers, in order to determine the psychosocial effects of IDDM on children and young patients. The mean age of the patients was 15.58±2.29 years and the mean duration of diabetes was 4.41±3 years. We measured the depression and self-esteem scores in all patients using a standardized questionnaire for Turkish children. Depression was found in four patients (10.3%), and the self-esteem scores of all patients were within the normal range. In this study, pollution caused by arsenic residues in grey mullets (Chalcarburnus tarichii, Pallas 1811) living in Van Lake were investigated. A Total 120 samples, from the four seasons from 01.01.1994 to 01.01.1995 were collected. The organic parts of the muscles were washed with a mixture of magnesium oxide and magnesium nitrate according to the dry ash method and arsenic residues were measured by silver diethyl dithyocarbamate in a spectrophotometer. By analyzing the 120 fish samples, arsenic residues were calculated to be 0.009 - 0.347 ppm (average 0.051±0.046). In light of these results as the arsenic residues in grey mullets …

In this study, HCN levels in 150 Sorghum halepense samples obtained from the province of Aydın during 3 different vegetation periods were determined. The analysis was carried out using spectrophotometry. According to the results of the analysis, average HCN levels during the tiller, flowering, and postflowering stages in Sorghum halepense leaves, were 460.8, 144.8, and 44.22 ppm respectively. It was concluded that HCN levels in Sorghum halepense growing in the province of Aydın would be toxic for herbivores during the tillers and flowering stages.

The purpose of this study was to compare total knee arthroplasties (TKA) to a group of control subjects to see if any balance deviations existed at 12-16 weeks post operatively. Ten normal and two TKA subjects (65-80 years of age) were evaluated with the NeuroCom Balance Master® 6.1 system The evaluation consisted of five tests that measured endsway, reaction times and weight bearing characteristics. Ten normal subjects as well as two TKA's took place in this study. The results showed that the TKA's had a decreased reaction time, increased sway and abnormal weight bearing characteristics. The purpose of this study was to analyze and compare the trunk muscle activity and range of motion in male and female golfers. With the use of surface electrode electromyography and motion analysis, three male and three female Division II collegiate golfers were evaluated. The EMG activity of the erector spinae, gluteus maximus, and external oblique muscles was measured bilaterally during the golf swing.
