A seven-month-old male collie was brought to our clinic with complaints of exhaustaion and fatigue for the past month, inability to stand on its hind legs, loss of voice and anorexia for the past week. In clinical examination, increase in heart frequency, difficulty in lifting the head, tetraparesis, regurgitation and urinary incontinence were observed. MG was suspected and 0.05 mg/kg i.m. neostigmine methylsulfate was given for clinical diagnosis. A positive response was seen within 30 minutes of drug application. Fine Structure Of The Chloride Cell In The Gill Epithelium Of Brachydaniorerio(Cyprinidae, Teleostei), Sema Isisağ, Hatice Karakişi

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

The main ultrastructural properties of the gill epithelium of the zebrafish, Brachydanio rerio are investigated. The pavement cells are distinguished with their microvilli, infolding protrusions and construction of an intercellular channel system, while the chloride cells sited in filamental and especially respiratory lamellar epithelia are characterized by a high number of well developed, large mitochondria and an expansive, membranous tubular system. The close relationship observed between these cell types indicates that, at least ultrastructurally, chloride cells are communicated with the external milieu via the channel system of the pavement cells.

The effects of the supplementation of yeast, molasses and barley to barley straw diets on the dry matter intake, digestibility and ruminal fermentation in sheep were investigated. Ten male merino sheep were used in a changeover design trial of five 30-day periods. Baker's yeast (50 g/kg straw), molasses (100g/kg straw) and barley grain (100 g/kg straw) were given either separately or in combination as supplements to barley straw. Supplementation increased the total dry matter intake by 18.2-36.8 %. Supplements given alone or in combination had no effect on dry matter and organic matter digestibility of the diet. Low-fat Edam cheese was manufactured using conventional cheese-making procedures using low-fat milk (1.5% fat). The cheese samples were aged for six months at 5 to 6°C. The cheese was analyzed for biochemical characteristics and peptide content. The peptide contents were determined with reverse phase chromatography. The association property of proteins and peptides in the soluble fraction of the cheese was determined using hydrophobic interaction chromatography. The overall peptide quantity increased with age with a marked increase in hydrophobic peptide content.

Faecal samples of 172 diarrhoeic and 130 non-diarrhoeic cattle were examined for the presence of Cryptosporidium oocysts. The prevalence of infection in diarrhoeic and non-diarrhoeic cattle was 63.3% and 69.2%, respectively. The infection was prevalent in cattle over three years old, in both diarrhoeic and non-diarrhoeic animals. In both groups, oocyst sheeding level of (+) was the most common. Cryptosporidium-positive faecal specimens were examined for the presence of Escherichia coli K 99 and rotavirus. E. coli K 99 was isolated from the faeces of 35 (32.1%) diarrhoeic and 23 (25.5%) non-diarrhoeic animals. Rotavirus was not detected in any of the …

A case of spontaneosly ruptured splenic hemangiosarcoma with abdominal dissemination in a 12-year-old male German shepherd dog is described. At necropsy, a ruptured tumor mass was seen in the ventral region of the visceral surface of the spleen, and disseminated tumor masses were seen throughout the peritoneal cavity. Histologically, in both the primary tumor mass and dis-seminated tumor masses, atypical endothelial cells lining vascular spaces as small clefts or as cavernous channels were observed. Twenty naturally infected horses were divided into two groups (10 control and 10 experimental) according to EPG values. An injectable formulation of moxidectin, in a dose of 0.3 mg/kg, was given to the horses orally in jam syrup. The evaluation of drug efficacy was based on EPG values. The same dose of the drug was applied to an additional 25 horses to test for side effects. The drug was found to be highly effective (100%) against strongylin parasites on days 7, 14. and 21. No side effects were observed.

The present study was conductud on qualis ( Coturnix coturnix japonica) to evaluate the effects of line and age of bird on egg characteristics. Total ninety Japanese quail from unselected (C) and selected (S) for high 4-week body weight for five generations were used. All birds were weighed individually at 10, 14 and 18-week of age and egg characteristics were obtained on all eggs collected during these weeks. This study was carried out to evaluate the regression equations for predicting the dry matter intake and digestible dry matter intake of roughages and live weight gain from roughages in lambs. In this study reproductive performance of female rainbow trout broodstock ( Oncorhynchus mykiss) in a commercial trout farm in Eastern Black Sea Region were evaluated during 1995 spawning season. Mean total and relative fencundity values were 2304±425 egg/individual and 1364±281 egg/kg, respectively, while mean egg dia meter was 5.2±0.21 mm. Fertilisation rate on average was 73.7% of total fencundity. 84.6% of the fertilised eggs was eyed and 96.0% of those eyed was hatched. In this case report, a sudden devoloped ventricular fibrillation following Pentothal anaesthesia in a dog and the treatment done was subjected. No abnormal findings were detected according to haemotologic and biochemical tests and ECG obtained at the preoperative period. Blood gases analysis and ECG monitoring were performed before anaesthesia induction for this experimental surgery. After the case was premedicated with Xylazine hydrochlorid (2mg/kg im), anaesthesia was induced by pentothal (Thiopental sodium 15 mg/kg iv). The chi-square and Wishart distributions play an important role in animal breeding applications, especially in the estima-tion of variance components using Bayesian methods. These two distributions are so related that one can easily be derived from the other. In other words, the chi-square distribution is a particular case of the Wishart distribution or the Wishart distribution is a mul-tivariate generalization of the chi-square distribution. This article provides a simple mathematical basis of the above-mentioned dis-tributions; it shows how one is derived from the other and in what from they are used in animal breeding applications.

This study was carried out to evaluate the effects of formaldehyde and blood treatments of sunflower meal on the degra-dation characteristics and effective degradability of dry matter(DM), organic matter and crude protein. Sunflower meal treated with 0.8 g formaldehyde/100 g crude protein, 0.5, 0.75, 1.5 and 2 L whole blood/kg DM. Three adult rumen fistulated merino rams were used in this study. Body And Nutritional Composition Of Tilapia (Tilapia Ssp.) From The Southern Seyhan River, Suat Di̇kel, Mehmet Çeli̇k

Nutritional composition and edible part of carcass of tilapia caught from the Southern Seyhan River were investigated in this study. The results showed that edible part of carcass of male and female tilapia were 52.8±1.34% and 51.4±0.57%, respec-tively. Dry matter of carcass was 21.8±0.08% whereas water content was 78.2±0.08%. Crude protein, crude fat and crude ash were2.66±0.75%, 12.16±0.74% and 5.18±0.02%, respectively.

This study was carried out to investigate the glutathione level in Morkaraman, Morkaraman x Dorsetdown (F1) and Morkaraman x Corriedale (F1) lambs and to demonstrate its relationship with birth-weight and live-weight gain. Fourtyone Morkaraman, 36 Morkaraman x Dorsetdown, 30 Morkaraman x Corriedale lambs were used as animal materials. Blood samples obtained from the animals were analysed by using spectrophotometric technique for the level of glutathione. The aim of the this study was to develop a model to estimate the individual feed consumption of fattening lambs which were fed in groups adlibitum. The individual feed consumption and live weight data obtained from the 3 previous works weresed. The feed consumption of 76 lambs in 41 different fattening periods were estimated by using the developed model and individual consumption values and group averages were compared with the estimated values. The model estimated the individual feed intake better than group averages in 33 of 41 calculations.

Primer oocytes (n=157) collected from ovaries of slaughtered cows were matured at 39°C with 95-100% humidity and under a gas mixture of 5% O 2 , 5% CO 2 and 90% N 2 for 22 (n=52), 24 (n=52) and 26 (n=53) hours. Modified Parker's Medium (MPM) supplemented with FSH and 20% ECS was used as maturation medium. The purpose of this investigation was to explore the effectiveness of walking and aerobics as a way of modifying body image apprehension and self-esteem of female college students. Participants from this study comprised 88 (25 African Americans and 63 Caucasians) students from a Southeastern university. The participants were administered the 9-item Social Physique Anxiety Scale (SPAS) (Martin, Rejeski, Leary, McAuley, & Bane, 1997) and the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (RSES) (Rosenberg, 1979). This study evaluates the quality of care provided by nurse practitioners HIVinfected clients in a specialized nursing center in Georgia. Quality of care is evaluated using Donabedians' Structure-Process-Outcome domains as presented in the Unifying Model of Quality Health Care. Structure is evaluated as the nurse practitioners in this clinic providing health care. The interpersonal aspect ofthe process of quality health care is measured by the researcher developed Outpatient Client Satisfaction Survey. Research over the past decade indicates that a wide range of psychological and interpersonal problems are more prevalent among those who have been sexually abused than among individuals with no such experiences. This paper summarizes what is currently known about these potential impacts of child sexual abuse. The various problems and symptoms described in the literature on child sexual abuse are reviewed in a series of broad categories including post-traumatic stress, emotional pain, avoidance, an impaired self, and interpersonal difficulties. Skin reactions are unavoidable side effects of radiotherapy for breast cancer that may limit the amount of treatment a patient is able to receive. As well, the discomfort associated with the treatment may negatively affect the patient's quality of life and their willingness to complete a course of treatment that typically extends over seven weeks. Prior literature suggests that variations in patients' tissue reactions to radiation may be related to Individual patient characteristics.
