Angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors have been known to inhibit the effects of angiotensin II which increases the vascular resistance. In this study, we studied the acute effects of a single dose of 2.5 mg oral cilazapril, ACE inhibitor on blood flow velocity and vascular resistance parameters of central retinal artery (CRA) by color Doppler ultrasonography in 17 patients with nonproliferative diabetic retinopathy (NPDR) and compared the effects of the drug with a placebo group including 17 patients with nonproliferative diabetic retinopathy. After cilazapril medication, peak systolic blood flow velocity of central retinal artery didn't change, while peak diastolic and …

Triiodothyronine occurs especially in 5'-monodeiodination of thyroxin in peripheral tissues. Deiodination of thyroxin mainly occurs in the liver. The enzyme which catalyzes this reaction is a seleno-enzyme. Deiodinase enzyme activity and the triiodothyronine level decrease in selenium deficiency. After the occurrence of chronic hepatic failure by carbon tetrachloride in rats, we gave sodium selenite to these rats. Then, we tried to evaluate the changes in thyroid hormone levels. Liver function tests, thyroxin and triiodothyronine levels, and hepatic 5'-deiodinase and glutathione peroxidase enzyme activities were measured. Triiodothyronine levels in the carbon tetrachloride group and carbon tetrachloride + selenium group were significantly …

Association Of Hla Type With Pseudoexfoliationof The Lens Capsule, Hakkı Doğan, Türkan Patiroğlu, Engin Baykal, Kuddusi Erkiliç

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Exfoliation of the lens capsule is asymptomatic but it is associated with the development of glaucoma and blindness if undetected and untreated. The occurrence of exfoliation varies widely in different countries where the population is ethnically homogeneous. It is suggested that both genetic and environmental influences are important in the development of exfoliative syndrome (ES). This study was carried out to determine if there was any relation between ES and HLA. HLA antigen types were determined in 45 patients with exfoliative syndrome. We found a strong association between HLA-A2, HLA-DR5, HLA B21 and HLA-DR7 and the existence of ES (Chi …

Detrusor Hyperreflexia In Stroke, Zafer Aybek, Türker Şahi̇ner, Atilla Oğuzhanoğlu, Levent Tuncay

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

In this study detrusor hyperreflexia was investigated by urodynamic study during the acute phase of stroke in patients who became incontinent after a cerebrovascular accident. Urodynamic studies reveal physiopathological findings of incontinence while the acute period of cerebrovascular accident do not cover neurogenic bladder features. In our study it was observed that most of the patients (60%) had normal bladder functions and detrusor hyperreflexia was a rare rindings. This result is consistent with the other studies in literature.

The Effects Of Different Metal Surfacetreatments On Marginal Microleakage In Resin-Bondedrestorations, Y. Şinasi Saraç, Kürsat Eser, Bedri Beydemi̇r, Tanju Akbay

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Margins are one of the most important aspects in the success of restorations. Therefore, we evaluated the effects of different metal surface treatments on the marginal microleakage of a resinbonded non-precious alloy (Remanium CS). After alloy surfaces were roughened by chemical etching or sandblasting the tooth and metal specimens were bonded together in pairs with a chemically curing resin cement (Panavia 21 EX) and placed in methylene blue dye. Spectrophotometry was used to assess marginal leakage. Statistical analysis was completed using the ANOVA test. No statistically significant difference in leakage was found between the groups (F=0.4387, p>0.05).
