The Effects Of Risk Management Program Implementation On Worker Safety Knowledge, John C. Donnelly

Community & Environmental Health Theses & Dissertations

This study examined the effect of the implementation of a risk management program tool on worker safety knowledge in a composite building material fabrication facility whose workers suffered from an increasingly high injury (incidence) rate in recent years. Risk assessment codes (RACs) and job safety analyses (JSAs) were the primary tools used to introduce workers to the concept of risk. Because employee involvement is a crucial element in JSA development. employee input was frequently solicited throughout JSA development.

The study instrument consisted of a pre-test and post-test survey, to which an experimental and control group were subjected. The instrument was …

A Requirement For Bone Morphogenetic Protein-7 During Development Of The Mammalian Kidney And Eye., Andrew T. Dudley, K. M. Lyons, E. J. Robertson Nov 1995

A Requirement For Bone Morphogenetic Protein-7 During Development Of The Mammalian Kidney And Eye., Andrew T. Dudley, K. M. Lyons, E. J. Robertson

Journal Articles: Genetics, Cell Biology & Anatomy

BMP-7/OP-1, a member of the transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-beta) family of secreted growth factors, is expressed during mouse embryogenesis in a pattern suggesting potential roles in a variety of inductive tissue interactions. The present study demonstrates that mice lacking BMP-7 display severe defects confined to the developing kidney and eye. Surprisingly, the early inductive tissue interactions responsible for establishing both organs appear largely unaffected. However, the absence of BMP-7 disrupts the subsequent cellular interactions required for their continued growth and development. Consequently, homozygous mutant animals exhibit renal dysplasia and anophthalmia at birth. Overall, these findings identify BMP-7 as an essential …

The Hardiness Of Adult Survivors Of Childhood Sexual Abuse And Their Adaptation To A Healthy Adult Life Style, Myra P. Buttacavoli Nov 1995

The Hardiness Of Adult Survivors Of Childhood Sexual Abuse And Their Adaptation To A Healthy Adult Life Style, Myra P. Buttacavoli

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

There are many negative consequences of childhood sexual abuse, (Browne Finkelhor, 1990). These effects do not vanish with adulthood and some adults stay scarred for life. However, it has been noted that some victims of childhood sexual abuse recover better than others regardless of the particular type of abuse. Could this adaptation be related to, or represent "hardiness" of the adult?

The purpose of this report is to explore the hardiness of adult victims of child sexual abuse and the adaptation strategies practiced. To achieve this goal, The Health Related Hardiness Scale, created by Susan Pollock, PhD. was adopted. Data …

Loss Associated With Chronic Illness: Application Of The Roy Adaptation Model, Linda M. Dehaan Nov 1995

Loss Associated With Chronic Illness: Application Of The Roy Adaptation Model, Linda M. Dehaan

Masters Theses

The Roy Adaptation Model guided this pretest-posttest quasi-experimental study to test an intervention addressing loss associated with chronic illness. Differences in adaptation and well-being were evaluated between control (n = 20) and experimental groups (n = 20) 30 days after intervention. Adaptation was measured by PAIS-SR scores and analyzed using ANCOVA to adjust for pretest differences. T-test and Mann-Whitney U was used to evaluate well-being as measured by the Global Well-being Scale. Changes in adaptation were not significantly different between groups, but well-being improved 12.8% in the experimental group as compared with 1.4% in the control group. Inconsistency of results …

Stimulation Of Alpha 1(I) Procollagen Gene Expression In Nih-3t3 Cells By The Human T Cell Leukemia Virus Type 1 (Htlv-1) Tax Gene., E. Munoz, D. Suri, S. Amini, K. Khalili, Sergio A. Jimenez Nov 1995

Stimulation Of Alpha 1(I) Procollagen Gene Expression In Nih-3t3 Cells By The Human T Cell Leukemia Virus Type 1 (Htlv-1) Tax Gene., E. Munoz, D. Suri, S. Amini, K. Khalili, Sergio A. Jimenez

Selected Works of Sergio Jiménez, MD, MACR

The mechanisms that regulate the expression of genes encoding extracellular matrix proteins in fibroblasts and other mesenchymal cells have remained elusive. Studies from several laboratories have indicated that Tax, a trans-regulatory protein from the human T cell leukemia virus type I not only augments viral gene expression but also triggers the expression of various cellular genes. Here, we examined the hypothesis that the expression of collagen genes may also be modulated by Tax. NIH-3T3 cells were simultaneously transfected with a Tax expressor plasmid and a chimeric construct containing regulatory sequences (-804 to +42 bp) of the alpha 1(I) procollagen gene …

Survival Of Immunoglobulin G-Opsonized Toxoplasma Gondii In Nonadherent Human Monocytes., Camilo E. Fadul, Jacqueline Y. Channon, Lloyd H. Kasper

Dartmouth Scholarship

Toxoplasma gondii is a protozoan parasite that is able to penetrate human monocytes by either passive uptake during phagocytosis or active penetration. It is expected that immunoglobulin G (IgG) opsonization will target the parasite to macrophage Fc gamma receptors for phagocytic processing and subsequent degradation. Antibody-opsonized T. gondii tachyzoites were used to infect nonadherent and adherent human monocytes obtained from the peripheral blood of seronegative individuals. The infected monocytes were evaluated for the presence of intracellular parasites and the degree of parasiticidal activity. A marked difference in both the numbers of infected macrophages and numbers of parasites per 100 macrophages …

Host Restriction Phenotypes Of Salmonella Typhi And Salmonella Gallinarum, Lisa Pascopella, Bärbel Raupach, Nafisa Ghori, Denise Monack, Stanley Falkow, P. L. C. Small

Public and Community Health Sciences Faculty Publications

Salmonella typhi and Salmonella gallinarum phenotypes correlated with mouse host restriction have been identified by using in vitro and in vivo systems. S. typhi is capable of entering the murine intestinal epithelium via M cells, as is Salmonella typhimurium, which causes systemic infection in the mouse. But, unlike S. typhimurium, S. typhi does not destroy the epithelium and is cleared from the Peyer’s patches soon after M-cell entry. S. gallinarum appears to be incapable of entering the murine Peyer’s patch epithelium. Our in vitro evidence suggests that S. gallinarum is taken up in murine phagocytic cells by a mechanism different …
