In a previous study, Salmonella isolates of sick birds were distinguished from those of apparently healthy birds by their high degree of invasion of tissue culture cells. In this study, a single pair of Salmonella isolates was examined to determine the source of this observed difference in invasion. When isolates were allowed to invade Caco-2 cells for 8 hours, the isolate from the sick bird (S) appeared to invade in greater numbers than did the isolate from the healthy bird (H). Capsules of Pasteurella multocida serogroups A, D and F contain mucopolysaccharides which block antigenic determinants and prevent phagocytosis. In this study, capsules of serogroup A, D and F strains of P. multocida were depolymerized by enzyme treatment. Capsule depolymerization of serogroup D and F strains with chondroitinase increased indirect hemagglutination (IHA) test titers and enhanced phagocytosis by swine neutrophils. Capsule depolymerization of serogroup A strains with hyaluronidase increased IHA titers, but depolymerization with chondroitinase did not. When serogroup A strains were treated with a combination of chondroitinase and hyaluronidase, IHA test titers were lower than titers of the same strains …

Embryo bisection may provide an attractive method for increasing the number of kids born to each donor doe. The present study was conducted to assess the feasibility of transferring goat demi-embryos, obtained from bisection, to increase the yield of offspring from each collection. Six blastocyst stage embryos, of good quality, were selected for bisection. Pairs of demi-embryos derived from these original embryos were transferred, either fresh, or after 3 hrs of culture in a holding medium, to 6 recipient does synchronized (±1 day) by intravaginal progestagen treatment. Effectiveness of the mixture of quaternary ammonium, alkyl dimethyl ammomium glyoxal, glutaraldehyde and formaldehyde in the inactivation of bacteria and fungi was conducted in vitro. The studies were performed on 53 strains of bacteria, both Gram's positive and Gram's negative, and 5 strains of contaminant fungi. The concentration of this disinfectant was adjusted to 1:100, 1:250 and 1:500 v/v with the exposure time of 1, 5, 10, 20, 40 and 60 min. Ninety three isolated E. coli from commercially reared chickens were tested for their antimicrobial sensitivity to 26 antimicrobial agents. Percentage of E. coli isolates tested were sensitive to gentamicin, lincomycin +spectino-mycin and danofloxacin; 83.52, 73.91 and 73.12%, respectively. Spectinomycin was the only antimicrobial agent that was not resistance to all E. coli isolates testing. The oocyte collection by using Real time B-mode scanning ultrasound (Ovum Pick Up) was performed in four Thai native calves aged 5-6 mts, weight 100 kg. All calves had an ear norgotromet progestagen implant for 7 days before ovarian stimulation. The calves were stimulated by follicle stimulting hormone (FSH) at dose of 120 mg, IM twice a day (am/pm) for 3 days as follow: 30/30, 20/20, 10/10 mg. After interviewing 300 pet keepers, two third of respondents are female whose household leaders hold Bachelor degree or above (33.8%) and overall family income is more then 50,000 bahts a month (26.8%). Most pet keepens keep pets as friends (33.5%), obtaining pets from acquaintants (44.1%), purchase (22.7%). Seventy pont two percent of those pet keepers perchase pets from Chatuchak Sunday Market. Ninety-one point seven percent of pets reared are dogs while 41.4% of them are mixed breeds. Before obtaining pets, most pet keepers have no knowledge of pet care (67.6%). Approximately 1.6% of all women will develop cancer of the cervix during their lifetime (4). Cervical cancer is the second leading type of cancer in women and accounts for approximately one-sixth of all cancer deaths in females. In many ways, cervical cancer behaves as a sexually transmitted disease. The major risk factors associated with cervical cancer are the early onset of sexual intercourse, multiple sexual partners, and/or sexual contact with promiscuous partners (66, 94). The disease is composed of several pathological stages ranging from cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) to invasive squamous carcinoma. Substantial evidence suggests that CIN is a precursor …

Current methods for the isolation and identification of Bordetella bronchiseptica from clinical samples are time-consuming and are based, in part, on subjective observations. We describe the use of a Bordetella-specific DNA probe in a nonradioactive colony lift-hybridization assay for the identification of B. bronchiseptica. Eleven of 82 clinical specimens were found to contain B. bronchiseptica by this method, while only 5 of these were reported to contain the organism when the specimens were analyzed by traditional methods. This study was designed to investigate the carrier state of swine infected with Salmonella choleraesuis. Thirty-five pigs were divided into 3 groups. Groups 1 (n = 15) and 2 (n = 16) were challenged with 108 CFU of S. choleraesuis intranasally or by gastric route, respectively. Group 3 (n = 4) served as uninoculated controls. Pigs were necropsied at 2, 4, 6, and 12 weeks post inoculation. Clinical signs and microscopic lesions were more severe for group 1. Mycobacterium avium complex strains and Mycobacterium paratuberculosis are closely related intracellular pathogens affecting humans and animals. M. avium complex infections are a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in AIDS patients, and M. paratuberculosis is the agent of Johne's disease in ruminants. Genetic manipulation of these micro-organisms would facilitate the understanding of their pathogenesis, the construction of attenuated vaccine strains and the development of new drugs and treatment methods. Bovine herpesvirus 1 (BHV-1) establishes a latent infection in sensory ganglionic neurons of infected animals. Expression of latency-related (LR) gene products is controlled by a 980-bp fragment (LR promoter). DNA sequence analysis revealed that two major open reading frames (ORFs) are in the LR gene. Antibodies directed against both ORFs were generated in rabbits by using synthetic peptides. Antibody P2, which is directed to sequences near the amino terminus of ORF 2, recognized a 41-kDa protein in lytically infected cells, suggesting that ORF 2 encodes a protein. A PRRS virus specific antibody among swine breeding farms in Thailand was studied. Serum samples were collected from 15 breeder farms in central and north-eastern part of Thailand during January to March 1995. Of total 449 samples, 286 (64%) were revealed PRRS-antibody indicated the history of PRRS virus exposure. The exposure rate was varied from 20-90% from farm to farm which appeared among replacement gilts, primiparous sows, multiparous sows and boars. The highest prevalence (75%) was in replacement gilts. In a previous study, enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli (EHEC) O157:H7 with a deletion and insertion in the eaeA gene encoding intimin was used to establish that intimin is required for the organism to attach to and efface microvilli in the piglet intestine (M. S. Donnenberg, S. Tzipori, M. L. McKee, A. D. O’Brien, J. Alroy, and J. B. Kaper, J. Clin. Invest. 92:1418–1424, 1993). B-mode, Real-Time Ultrasound with 5 MHz Linear Array Transducer were used for pregnancy examination. Twenty five female dogs with different gestation period were examined. During early gestation period (19-29 days), round or oval embryonic vesicles with embryo in embryonic fluid were seen. Embryonic heart activity was detected at about 21-22 days of gestation and was seen easily in the middle and late gestation. At 30-35 days of gestation, the embryo developed hypoechoic head and body with embryonic movement. After 36 days of gestation the hyperechoic skeleton, hypoechoic organs and embryonic activities can be clearly identified. Thailand has one of the richest freshwater small fauna in the world; over 170 species are currently recognized. However, species that transmit animal diseases, or are suspected to, are relatively few. At present, only 23 freshwater snail species are implicated or suspected in animal disease transmission. These species are restricted to two orders and seven families. The conventional colorimetric method of cholinesterase activity determination in blood and tissues of mammals was applied to investigate the enzyme activity in muscle and nervous cell of aquatic animals which are economically important, such as, tiger shrimp (Penaeus monodon fabricus) and giant perch (Lates calcarifer). Decreased enzyme activity in aquatic animals may indicate the contamination of insecticide in water resources. This study demonstrated that the method was suitable for detecting toxicity of organophosphate insecticide due to its convenience, simplicity and no sophisticated or expensive instruments needed. A continuing incidence of abortion record was investigated in a 1700 sow-breeding farm during 1992 through the first three quarters of 1995. The abortion rate per pregnant sows per year were 2.5, 3.7, 3.9 and 3.2% respectively compared to 0.3% recorded in 1991. Different freezing methods were performed to compare the viability of African catfish sperm. Cooling at 4°C can preserve the quality of spermatozoa up to three days. Freezing with the manual method using straw, cryotube, or pellet cryoprotected by methanol could not preserve the African catfish spermatozoa. Freezing by the programmable computerized freezing (PCF) method in cryotubes using 5 and 10% DMSO as cryoprotectant at -196°C for 5 minutes, 3, 7 and 15 days show a similar percentage motility of approximately 10, 5, <1 and <1% respectively. But freezing with 20% of DMSO showed lower percentage motility about 5, 5, <1 and <1% respectively. A freezing by PCF method using straw with DMSO and methanol fail to preserve the African catfish spermatozoa.(ใช้น้ำเชื้อที่เก็บจากพ่อพันธุ์ปลาดุกรัสเซียที่เจริญพันธุ์ เพื่อศึกษาวิธีการแช่เย็น (4 องศา เซลเซียส และการแช่แข็ง (-196 องศาเซลเซียส) ด้วยวิธี Manual Freezing (MF) และด้วยวิธี Programmable Computerized Freezing (PCF) การแช่เย็นพบว่าสามารถเก็บรักษาน้ำเชื้อปลาได้นานอย่างน้อย 3 วัน ส่วนการแช่แข็งโดยวิธี MF ทั้งในรูป straw, cryotube และ pellet โดยใช้ methanol เป็นสารป้องกันการแช่แข็งนั้นไม่สามารถเก็บรักษาคุณภาพน้ำเชื้อไว้ได้ ส่วนการแช่แข็งด้วยวิธี PCR ในรูป cryotube โดยใช้ DMSO ที่ 5 และ 10% เป็นสารป้องกันการแช่แข็ง พบว่าเปอร์เซ็นต์การเคลื่อนไหวของตัวอสุจิ นาน 5 นาที หรือ 3, 7 และ 15 วัน มีค่าใกล้เคียงกัน ประมาณ 10, 5, 11 และ <1% ตามลำดับ เมื่อใช้ DMSO ที่ 20% เปอร์เซ็นต์การเคลื่อนไหวจะน้อยกว่าประมาณ 5, 5, 41 และ 41% ตามลำดับ ส่วนการแช่แข็งโดยวิธี PCF ในรูปแบบ straw โดยใช้ methanol และ DMSO เป็นสารป้องกันการแช่แข็งไม่สามารถเก็บรักษาคุณภาพน้ำเชื้อไว้ได้)

Neuraminidase-treated bovine serum amyloid P component (SAP) has chromatographic profile from DEAE-HPLC column of shorter retention time and less peak number than intact molecule does. SDS-PAGE analysis reveals a decrease in size of bovine SAP subunits after neuraminidase treatment, compared with an untreated molecule. Prepubertal neutering in dogs has both advantages and disadvantages. The advantages include reduction of the incidence of mammary gland neoplasia and reduction of sexual behavior. The disadvantages are elongation of long bone and an inflammation of the external genitalia. Anesthesia of young dog may be more risky than in the adult. Effects of prepubertal neutering on urethral diameter and sex hormone imbalance dermatosis are not well documented. This reports on 4 cases of canine anesthesia carried out for a thoracoscopy workshop. Since one lung needed to be collapsed for the surgical procedure, endo-bronchial tubes had to be used. The acute toxicity of carbaryl was determined for giant pearch (Lates calcarifer) in static exposure systems. The mean 96-h LC was 2.95 mg/litre. All exposed fishes at first showed symptoms of carbaryl intoxication such as hyperexcitability, decrease in swimming performance, loss of coordination movement and reduction of food intake. Severity of intoxication and mortality rate were found to be dose dependent. Decreased cholinesterase activity in muscle and brain of all treated fishes was also observed withincreasing of carbaryl concentration. The reduction of cholinesterase in muscle and brain of all treated groups was statistically significant (p < 0.05) comparing with the control group.(ศึกษาความเป็นพิษเฉียบพลันของคาร์บาริลในปลากะพงขาวหลังแช่นาน 96 ชั่วโมง ค่า LC50 ภายใน 96 ชั่วโมงเท่ากับ 2.95 มก./ลิตร พบว่าปลาทุกกลุ่มที่ได้รับคาร์บาริลแสดง อาการเป็นพิษโดยมีอาการกระวนกระวาย ว่ายน้ำช้าลง สูญเสียการทรงตัว กินอาหารน้อยลง ความรุนแรงของอาการและเปอร์เซนต์การตายของปลาเพิ่มขึ้นตามขนาดความเข้มข้นของ สารฆ่าแมลงที่ได้รับ สมรรถนะของเอนไซม์โซลีนเอสเทอเรสในกล้ามเนื้อและสมองของปลาทุกกลุ่มลดลงตามขนาดความเข้มข้นของสารฆ่าแมลงที่เพิ่มขึ้นและต่ำกว่ากลุ่มควบคุมอย่างมีนัยสำคัญทางสถิติที่ p < 0.05)

Three hundred and fifty five neonatal piglets were used to determine the effect of piglet processing at two different ages on the survival rate from birth to weaning (28 days). We identified a semidominant, chemically induced, mouse use mutation with a complex array of abnormal behaviors including bidirectional circling and hyperactivity, abnormal circadian rhythmicity and abnormal responses to light. In this report, we genetically and phenotypically characterized the circling/ waltzing component of the abnormal behavior. We mapped the locus controlling this trait by heterozygosity mapping of partially congenic lines carrying the mutagenized chromosome outcrossed to different inbred strains for three generations. Analysis of 68 PCR-based markers in 13 affected individuals indicated that the mutant locus, named Wheels (Whl), resides in the subcentromeric portion of mouse chromosome 4. The …
