The Effect Of Scalp Electroacupuncture On Motor Neuron Excitability Of Stroke Patients, Hsiang Wei, Simon F. T. Tang, Alice M. K. Wong

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

The effect of scalp acupuncture with or without electrical stimulation has been used for years on improving the ambulation of stroke patients. However, the mechanism remains unclear. In this study, the changes in spinal motor neuron excitability of stroke patient were measured before and after scalp electroacupuncture. Thirty subjects with first stroke resulting in spastic hemiparesis or hemiplegia were studied. Two scalp acupuncture regions, the motor area and the motor-sensory area of foot, were inserted with a 1.5 inch scalp needle on both sides respectively. Each subject was stimulated with an electric current, from 7 mA to 12 mA at …

Cardiopulmonary Stress Testing In Children With Congenital Heart Disease After Surgery - A Preliminary Report, Chen-Liang Chou, Huey-Ling Yu, Tacho-Jen Liu, Tao-Chang Hsu

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Most children with congenital heart disease (CHD) were restricted in their daily activities, which can affect their normal psychosocial development. In this study, we used cardiopulmonary stress testing to evaluate the cardiopulmonary responses of children with congenital heart disease surgery. The result showed that the pulmonary function was within normal limit. Though the incidence rate of abnormal ECG during exercise test was 54%, most of the subjects were asymptomatic. The percentage of functional aerobic impairment (FAI) was 22%, but is clinically insignifieant. It is concluded that children with CHD after surgery should not be restricted in their exercise activities, so they …

Meningioma Associated With Lumbar Hivd-Casereport, Yung-Szu Huang, Sau-Chin Mei, I-Ping Liu

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Spinal meningioma is a well circumscribed benign tumor. It grows slowly and acounts for about 25% of primary spinal cord tumors. It occurs predominantly in women and in thoracic region. Sometimes, we mistook its early symptoms for another problems such as arthritis, arachnoiditis, peripheral nerve disease, or motor neuron disease etc. Fortunately, Patient with severe motor deficit less than two months may get satisfactory improvements after surgery. The recurrent rate of spinal meningioma is much lower than that of intracranial meningioma. We reported a case of spinal meningioma at T4 level. He was diagnosed initially as lumbar disc herniation and …

Periodic Paralysis With Thyrotoxicosis Casereport And Review Of Literature, Kuo-Chen Tseng, Chung-Miu Kaw, Yi-Shin Chen Dec 1995

Periodic Paralysis With Thyrotoxicosis Casereport And Review Of Literature, Kuo-Chen Tseng, Chung-Miu Kaw, Yi-Shin Chen

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Periodic paralysis is a repetitive, transient muscle weakness syndrome. It lasts from minutes to several hours even for days. It often involves proximal and trunk muscle groups, but rare in ocular, bulbar muscles. There is a striking predilection for young males. EMG studies reveal relationships between periodic paralysis and muscle membrane deplarization, and there is compound muscle action potential decrease after vigorous exercise. Potassium imbalance between intracelluar space and serum is the probable reason for this phenomenon. About 2-30% periodic paralysis has connections with thyrotoxicosis. Hyperthyroidism victim is more easiler to affect periodic paralysis than normal one. As some symptoms …

Cerebral Amyloid Angiopathy: A Common Cause Of Intracerebral Hemorrhage In The Elderly - A Casereport, Wen-Chung Tsai, Tyng-Guey Wang, Huey-Wen Liang, Jin-Shin Lai

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Cerebral amyloid angiopathy, defined as deposition of amyloid in the walls of brain vessels, is belived to be a common cause of intracerebral hemorrhage in the elderly. It differentiates from the intracerebral hemorrhage of hypertension by its specific location of bleeding. The hematoma from cerebral amyloid angiopathy, sometimes multilobar, is always located in the brain cortices and the white matter beneath them. In the previous reports, the presence of cerebral amyloid angiopathy accounts for 5-10% of non-traumatic cerebral hemorrhage. However, it has been overlooked or misdiagnosed all the time because of the lack of tissue proof. Recurrent bleeding occurs so …
