We have examined the early events in Ca2+-induced fusion of large (0.2 μm diameter) unilamellar cardiolipin/phosphatidylcholine and phosphatidylserine/phosphatidylethanolamine vesicles by quick-freezing freeze-fracture electron microscopy, eliminating the necessity of using glycerol as a cryoprotectant. Freeze-fracture replicas of vesicle suspensions frozen after 1-2 s of stimulation revealed that the majority of vesicles had already undergone membrane fusion, as evidenced by dumbbell-shaped structures and large vesicles. In the absence of glycerol, lipidic particles or the hexagonal HII phase, which have been proposed to be intermediate structures in membrane fusion, were not observed at the sites of fusion. Lipidic particles were evident in less …

A Comparative Analysis Of The Training, Internships, And Job Opportunities For Clinical And Counseling Psychologists, Mary Theresa Zirpoli
A Comparative Analysis Of The Training, Internships, And Job Opportunities For Clinical And Counseling Psychologists, Mary Theresa Zirpoli
Masters Theses
Recent literature indicates that clinical and counseling psychologists are trained in very different ways, work with very different populations, and perform different skills. The literature also shows this traditional exclusivity to be vanishing. Three studies were conducted to determine similarities and differences in the training, internships, and types of jobs that clinical and counseling psychologists obtain. Data for the three studies were obtained from the curricula of 7k American Psychological Association approved graduate programs, six job opening lists from the American Psychological Association Monitor, and the American Psychological Internship Centers Manual. Variables included specific types of coursework, settings, patient population, …

Echocardiographic Identification Of Left Ventricular Cavity Obliteration, Vidyadhar R. Gandra, Mohsin Alam, Fareed Khaja, Sidney Goldstein, Jeffrey B. Lakier
Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal
We identified 22 patients with angiographic left ventricular cavity obliteration (LVCO), of whom 15 were available for M-mode and two-dimensional echocardiographic evaluation. All 15 patients had chest pain, and 13 had long-standing hypertension. Electrocardiographic evidence of left ventricular hypertrophy was present in ten patients. The echocardiographic criterion for LVCO was apposition of the left ventricular septum with the left ventricular posterior endocardium during systole as demonstrated by either M-mode or two-dimensional systems. LVCO was demonstrated during systole by M-mode echocardiography in seven of 15 patients and by two-dimensional echocardiography in 14 patients. LVCO could not be demonstrated in ten randomly …
Primary Hyperparathyroidism: The Continuing Saga Of Surgical Problems, Melvin A. Block
Primary Hyperparathyroidism: The Continuing Saga Of Surgical Problems, Melvin A. Block
Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal
Continuing problems in the management and surgical treatment of primary hyperparathyroidism include the localization of the elusive single tumor, the recognition and management of multiple gland involvement, prompt confirmation and operative treatment for hypercalcemic crisis, delineation of a liberal but selective policy relative to surgery for apparent uncomplicated hyperparathyroidism in the elderly, and recognition of the surgeon's responsibility to determine the extent of the operation on the basis of operative findings, realizing that histologic study may not confirm apparent gross abnormalities despite subsequent clinical recovery. When all four glands are involved in primary hyperparathyroidism, subtotal parathyroidectomy is recommended except for …

Hyperviscosity Syndrome Complicating Rheumatoid Arthritis: Report Of Two Additional Cases And Review Of The Literature, Michael R. Lovy, Mark C. Kranc, Gilbert B. Bluhm, Jeanne M. Riddle, Paul D. Stein
Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal
A hyperviscosity syndrome developed in two patients with rheumatoid arthritis. Analytic ultracentrifugation of the sera from one patient demonstrated 22S complexes. Intermediate, 22S, and 31S complexes were found in the second case. Platelet aggregometry and electron microscopy surveys of the platelet reactivity in one patient demonstrated inhibition of platelet reactivity caused by the presence of the high molecular weight complexes. These abnormalities, as well as the clinical bleeding, whole blood, and plasma viscosity, became normal after treatment. In vivo leukocytic function was studied with the Rebuck skin window technique, and phagosomal inclusions were observed in both the polymorphonuclear neutrophils and …

The Measurement Of Human Chorionic Gonadotropin For Pregnancy Testing, Carolyn S. Feldkamp, William H. Pfeffer
The Measurement Of Human Chorionic Gonadotropin For Pregnancy Testing, Carolyn S. Feldkamp, William H. Pfeffer
Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal
/Among many measurable hormones, human chorionic gonadotropin (FICG) is commonly used for pregnancy testing because it is very sensitive and relatively specific. Pregnancy can be identified shortly after implantation. Because some reagents cross-react with luteinizing hormone (LH), the sensitivity of urine tests has been adjusted to maintain specificity. Radioreceptor assay s on serum are more sensitive than urine tests but similarly lack specificity. The problems of LH cross-reactivity are eliminated by antisera specific for the beta subunit. Quantitation of HCG provides additional information useful in diagnosing ectopic pregnancy, providing a prognosis in threatened abortion, and following neoplasms. Considerations of cost, …

Microbiological Water Quality Of Impoundments: A Literature Review, G. Allen Burton Jr.
Microbiological Water Quality Of Impoundments: A Literature Review, G. Allen Burton Jr.
Public Health Resources
Assessing the microbiological water quality of impoundments and the potential for waterborne disease outbreaks is a difficult task when using traditional sampling programs. Problems associated with using fecal coliform bacteria as indicators of human pathogen presence complicates assessments of future water quality in preimpoundment areas. Reliable determination of future and present microbiological water quality requires knowledge of how the chemical, physical, and biological characteristics of the watershed and impoundment interrelate to influence microbial indicator and pathogen densities. Accurate estimates of microbial indicator and pathogen densities, obtainable by using the enumeration methods and their modifications suggested in this report, will allow …

Survey Of Spinal Cord Injury In Taipei City During 1978-1979, Chue-Fun Chen, I-Nan Lien
Rehabilitation Practice and Science
A survey of incidence of spinal cord injury (SCI) was made in 15 hospitals in Taipei city from Jan. 1978 to Dec. 1979. A total of 196 new SCI patients were enrolled during the period. Among them, 44 cases were residents of Taipei city, revealing the annual incidence of SCI in Taipei city to be 10 per million population. The other 152 cases were residents of other parts of the country. Accordingly, it is estimated that about 170 persons are suffering SCI annually in the whole Taiwan Area. This figure might be underestimated because some of the cases who died …
Teaching General Behavior Modification Performance Skills With Written Instructions, James D. Cowart
Teaching General Behavior Modification Performance Skills With Written Instructions, James D. Cowart
Dissertations
Two experiments examined the effects of training with written instructions on trainees' use of general behavior modification performance skills. In Experiment I, the behavior modification skills of two groups of trainees were assessed in scripted roleplay sessions. Each group participated in differing numbers of baseline sessions before training was presented. Training consisted of studying a set of written rules and examples. Only after training did the trainees demonstrate improved skills. Since the "child" behaviors which were presented during roleplay sessions were all different from one another, the trainees' performance demonstrated generality of the effects of training across "child" behaviors. The …
