Antibiotic Susceptibility Of Black-Pigmented Bacteroides Isolates From The Human Oral Cavity, Linda Jean Laatsch, Paul R. Hohenfeldt, William L. Kos

The minimal inhibitory concentrations of penicillin and six other antibiotics were determined for 66 oral black-pigmented Bacteroides isolates by using the National Committee for Clinical Laboratory Standards proposed standard agar dilution technique. These results plus iodometric determination of β-lactamase activity showed that oral isolates of black-pigmented Bacteroides are remaining relatively susceptible to commonly used antibiotics.

Dummy variables frequently are used in regression analysis but often in an incorrect fashion. A brief review of examples in the medical care literature showed that the interpretation of dummy variable regression coefficients and their significance was often incorrect or unclear. This article shows how dummy variables can be used and assessed properly. The importance of testing for the joint effect of a group of dummy variables is stressed. It also gives a standard and useful extension of the dummy variable technique to testing for the effect of collections of variables.

Some aspects of anuran metabolism are examined, with special emphasis on possible limitations to aerobic metabolism and the effect of chronic hypoxia acclimation on maximal rates of aerobic metabolism and the metabolic fate of lactic acid accumulated after anaerobic metabolism.

Effects Of The Serotonin Depletor Parachlorophenylalanine Upon Shock-Induced Aggression And Pressing Responses In Rats, Robert G. Sewell

The literature concerning the effects of d, l-parachlorophenylalanine (PCPA) upon shock-induced aggression (SIA) is reviewed and found to be inconsistent. PCPA, a known serotonin depletor, has behavioral effects in a variety of other procedures which collectively suggest that PCPA should produce SIA enhancement. The present study was designed to analyze PCPA (300 mg/kg) effects upon SIA in rats restrained spatially close to an inanimate target and panel operandum. The results showed marked increases in both aggressive biting and panel pressing for several days following each PCPA treatment for each subject tested. Antibody raised against the purified human erythrocyte glucose transporter specifically precipitated four proteins from normal and Rous sarcoma virus-transformed chicken embryo cells: a major protein of Mr 41,000 and minor proteins of Mr 68,000, 73,000, and 82,000. The Mr 41,000 and 82,000 proteins were found only in a membrane fraction, not in the soluble fraction, and displayed a heterogeneous mobility on NaDodSO4/polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, suggesting glycosylation. The Mr 41,000 and 82,000 proteins were increased in amount after malignant transformation in direct proportion to the increase in hexose transport rate, and the increase was dependent on the expression of the src …

A fortunate coincidence, discovered recently, has provided annual ryegrass toxicity researchers with valuable knowledge which may help them understand how the ARGT toxins affect animals, and further their investigations into vaccine development. A toxic antibiotic, identified years ago, has proved to be closely related to the ARGT toxins. Antibiotics are generally regarded as effective agents for the control of many bacterial and fungal infections. However, some of them are toxic to both the bacteria and the host, whether man or animal.

Cluster Analysis To Determine Headache Types, Paula Diehr

Cluster analysis was used to separate 726 headache patients into clusters of patients with similar symptoms. This was done to answer two questions: what "naturally occurring' groups of patients can be found? And how do these groups correspond to traditional headache types? When only two clusters were required, the best two clusters were tension and migraine-like. However, eight clusters could also be distinguished, and the migraine group then became very small. The clusters were tested for clinical interpretability by having 12 physicians name and prescribe treatment for the clusters.
