Structure, Transcription And Evolution Of The Alu Family Of Interspersed Repetitive Dna Sequences, James Tilford Elder

The cloning of DNA fragments derived from the (beta)-like globin gene cluster of normal and (beta)('+)-thalassemic individuals is described. These and other cloned human DNA fragments are employed to define the strucure and transcription of a family of interspersed, repetitive RNA polymerase III transcription units in human DNA. These data allow unequivocal identification of these transcription units with the Alu family of interspersed, repetitive DNA sequences. Comparison of these sequences to those of other primate and rodent interspersed repeats reveals that the primate sequence resembles in many respects a dimer of the rodent sequence. This striking interordinal divergence stands in …

Follicular center cell lymphoma with sclerosis is a significant clinicopathologic entity which has received little attention to date. Its uniqueness has been obscured by quarrels over classification of the non-Hodgkin's lymphomas; and by the reluctance of some to accept it as a bona fide pathologic subtype in the retroperitoneum, its most common site of presentation. This thesis examines the clinical and pathological findings in a series of 22 cases of retroperitoneal follicular center cell lymphoma with sclerosis obtained from the hematopathology files of Yale-New Haven Hospital. Background material on the immunobiology, classification, and staging of non-Hodgkin's lymphomas is provided; and …
Maternal Plasma 6-Keto Prostaglandin F1Α In Preeclampsia, Augusta Simpson Roth
Maternal Plasma 6-Keto Prostaglandin F1Α In Preeclampsia, Augusta Simpson Roth

The possibility of decreased prostacyclin (PGI2) in preeclampsia-eclampsia is currently being studies by several laboratories. Because of prostacyclin's various actions (platelet aggregation inhabitation, vasodilation, stimulation of renin release, and possible inhibition of the hypertensive effects of angiotensin II), an increase in the peripheral activity of this chemical could explain much of the altered physiology of normal pregnancy. A relative decrease in peripheral activity could tie together the various pathophysiological findings of preeclampsia-eclampsia. Therefore, plasma 6-keto, PGF1α, the stable nonenzymatic metabolite of prostacyclin, was measured in women with preeclampsia, and in those women of various gestational ages having a normal pregnancy. …

The Significance Of Fever In Infants Less Than Three Months Old : A Retrospective Review Of One Year's Experience At Boston City Hospital's Pediatric Walk-In Clinic, Paula Chandler Schlesinger
The Significance Of Fever In Infants Less Than Three Months Old : A Retrospective Review Of One Year's Experience At Boston City Hospital's Pediatric Walk-In Clinic, Paula Chandler Schlesinger

The hospital records of all outpatient infants 92 days of age or less with rectal temperature ≥ 100° F and/or chief complaint of fever who presented to Boston City Hospital's Pediatric Walk-In Clinic (PWIC) in the year 1981 were reviewed. There were 187 total study visits. The rectal temperature (T) in the PWIC was ≥ 100°F in 132 visits; half of these visits (66) were for T ≥ 101°F. The number of patients presenting with T ≥ 101°F increased with each month of age. The majority of study visits (56.1%) were for mild, self-limited illnesses; 14.4% of all visits were …
