Regulation Of Protein Synthesis By Leucine And Amino Acid Balance., John Patrick Mcgowan May 1982

Regulation Of Protein Synthesis By Leucine And Amino Acid Balance., John Patrick Mcgowan

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The effects of a physiologically balanced mixture of amino acids on the synthesis of proteins has been investigated. The roles of leucine and tryptophan, both implicated in the regulation of protein synthesis, were also studied. The balance of amino acids is important under specific rate-limiting conditions; the physiological balance "protects" the protein synthesizing system from the stressed condition of leucine limitation. Leucine is an important regulator of protein synthesis and the tryptophan effect on translation is dependent on the concentration of leucine. Thus tryptophan is a secondary regulator. The relative concentration of amino acids, described as balance, alterned the synthesis …

Meal Interference With Antibiotics Administered Orally In Kentucky Hospitals, Shirley Harper May 1982

Meal Interference With Antibiotics Administered Orally In Kentucky Hospitals, Shirley Harper

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Hospitals within the State of Kentucky were surveyed to determine if the size of the hospitals influence the frequency of potential meal interference with the administration of oral antibiotics where the "empty stomach" concept must be fulfilled. One hundred and ten hospitals responded to the mailed survey. Of the responding hospitals 103 were short-term and 7 were long-term hospitals. The frequency of conflict was greater for nourishments than with meal interference. Ninety-three and six tenths percent or 103 answered yes when asked if all patients received nourishments on request. The conflicts of potential meal interference ranged from 15 to 40 …

Hair As An Indicator Of Excessive Aluminum Exposure, Robert A. Yokel Apr 1982

Hair As An Indicator Of Excessive Aluminum Exposure, Robert A. Yokel

Pharmaceutical Sciences Faculty Publications

To determine if excessive systemic exposure to aluminum would be reflected in increased aluminum concentration in hair, rabbits were given a series of aluminum lactate injections. Hair was collected before the aluminum lactate administration from the site of injections and twice after the injections from this site as well as from an area adjoining the injection site. Aluminum was determined by flameless atomic absorption analysis of acid-digested samples. The concentration of aluminum in the hair increased after the injections in samples taken at both times from both sites. Considerable variability in hair aluminum was found before excessive exposure, as has …

Method Of Administering Natural Female Sex Horomones, Anwar A. Hussain, Shinichiro Hirai, Rima Bawarshi Feb 1982

Method Of Administering Natural Female Sex Horomones, Anwar A. Hussain, Shinichiro Hirai, Rima Bawarshi

Pharmaceutical Sciences Faculty Patents

The invention relates to a novel method of administering the natural female sex hormones, 17 β- estradiol and progesterone, to achieve enhanced bioavailability thereof. The invention further relates to novel dosage forms of 17 β- estradiol and/or progesterone which are adapted for nasal administration, such as solutions, suspensions, gels and ointments. The dosage forms containing a combination of 17 β-estradiol and progesterone are particularly useful as contraceptives, while the dosage forms containing only one of the hormonal components find utility in the treatment of conditions such as menopause, menstrual disorders, etc., which are known to respond to administration of a …

Synthesis Of 3-(Substituted-Aryl)-1,2,3,4-Oxatriazolium-5-Olates As Potential Hypotensive Agents, Mary Quinn Lund Jan 1982

Synthesis Of 3-(Substituted-Aryl)-1,2,3,4-Oxatriazolium-5-Olates As Potential Hypotensive Agents, Mary Quinn Lund

Theses and Dissertations

Hypertension or high blood pressure is a major cause of illness and death in the United States today.1,2 An estimated thirty-six million people suffer from this disease.3 Prolonged hypertension and its attendant strain on various organs may cause heart failure, brain stroke or kidney damage.4 Usually, a pressure of 140/90 mm Hg is taken to be the dividing line between normotension and hypertension.5,6

The hypertensive condition is generally characterized as either primary (essential) hypertension or secondary hypertension.1 A specific cause can be identified in secondary hypertensive patients, such as, pheochromocytoma or adrenal tumor. These causes …

Contractility Of Isolated Cardiac Muscle Obtained From Normotensive And Treated Or Untreated Hypertensive Rat Hearts : Effects Of Inotropic Agents, Mary Bassey Amanam Jan 1982

Contractility Of Isolated Cardiac Muscle Obtained From Normotensive And Treated Or Untreated Hypertensive Rat Hearts : Effects Of Inotropic Agents, Mary Bassey Amanam

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

In the present study, the contractility of isolated cardiac muscle obtained from normotensive and treated or untreated hypertensive rat hearts were investigated. The effects of inotropic agents were also explored •

Some SHRs were subjected to chronic antihypertensive treatment. After their blood pressure had been lowered, positive and negative inotropic agents were used to study the papillary muscles. The effects of acidosis, increased extracellular calcium, hypoxia, and reoxygenation on the isolated papillary muscles obtained from their hearts were studied. The same was done for isolated cardiac muscles that were removed from WKYs and SHRs. Isoproterenol in the absence or presence …

The Role Of The Pharmacist In Health Care And Medical Treatment In Saudi Arabia As Perceived By The Patient, Mohammed H. Al Haidari Jan 1982

The Role Of The Pharmacist In Health Care And Medical Treatment In Saudi Arabia As Perceived By The Patient, Mohammed H. Al Haidari

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Saudi Arabia, one of the developing countries, has a number of problems with the health care and medical treatment of the Saudi people. This study was undertaken to identify and to examine some of these problems and the role of the pharmacist in health education.

A questionnaire was developed and sent to 200 Saudi students in the United States; 111 completed questionnaires were returned. The questionnaire was also sent to Saudi Arabia where 51 persons were interviewed. Results of the questionnaire indicated that some of the problems identified were due to the attitudes of the person interviewed and others resulted …
