In recent years, operant conditioning techniques have been effectively used to modify a variety of behaviors. For the most part, the modification of stuttering behavior has relied solely on the use of punishment. The shaping of "fluency” through differential reinforcement has been reported as a behavioral approach for the treatment of stuttering; however, the effectiveness of this technique in combination with other "teaching" tools, such as, modeling, instruction, and explanation has not been reported in the literature.

Perfusion studies carried out in 50 enucleated normal Rhesus eyes suggested that the trabecular meshwork is responsible for 60-65% of the resistance to aqueous outflow, that aqueous outflow pathways in the inner 1/3 to 1/2 of the sclera are responsible for about 25%, that pathways in the outer 1/2 to 2/3 of the sclera account for 10-15%, and that more distal path ways account for very little, if any resistance. An initial opening into Schlemm's canal increased the facility of outflow proportionally much more than did subsequent extension of the incision. Mean facility of aqueous outflow was found to be …

C5713L/6J mice were injected with D-amphetamine sulfate for the last six days of gestation. Their offspring were compared with those of saline-injected and untreated controls. Although the amphetamine-treated mothers gained less weight than controls during treatment and three days post partum, this did not affect litter size or body or brain weight of the offspring at birth. Injections of either drug or saline altered the rate of weight gain for the first month. The offspring of the amphetamine-treated mothers had lower levels of brain norepinephrine on the day of birth and higher levels of norepinephrine and dopamine than either control …

Since the introduction of the hypothesis that abnormal transmethylation of biogenic amines may be associated with mental illness, transmethylation processes have been shown to be important in the production of biologically active amine derivatives. Laduron has shown that dopamine can be N-methylated with an enzyme from rat brain that requires 5-methyltetrahydrofolic acid (5MTHF ) as a methyl donor. This study shows that the methylation reaction which produces epinine from dopamine is greatest with supernatant from homogenized caudate lobe as compared to the cerebellum, hippocampus, cortex, and raphe nucleus: the brains of male rats were dissected and homogenized, the supernatant was …

An experimental study was conducted in four convalescent facilities using fourteen CVA patients with body scheme disturbances. The study was done to test the hypothesis that the experimental technique of light touch sensory stimulation as supplied by fast brushing to the skin dermatomes C 5, 6, 7, and 8 of the affected arms would increase the scores of the subjects in the experimental group.

The purpose of this study was to determine whether uncooperative behavior and a quantitative measurement of depression exist in the same patient in a public health nurse's caseload. Seven full-time public health nurses were randomly selected from the San Bernardino Public Health Department staff. They reviewed their caseloads and selected all the patients who met the general criteria.

The study was conducted to explore the extent to which communication about high-risk infants identified prior to hospital discharge, influences the public health nursing supervision to these infants during the neonatal period. A high-risk infant was defined as one that stands a greater than average chance of developing neonatal, life threatening disease or sequellae (physical, intellectual, or social handicap) due usually to maternal health or social factors, infant factors such as length of gestation, birth trauma, or complications at birth. Sensory substitution--The replacing of an impaired sensory channel by a properly functioning one--is possibly best manifested today in attempts to provide visual aids for the blind. The tactile vision substitution system (T.V.S.S.) is an example of one such visual aid. The system presents patterned tactile stimulation to the skin of the observer provided by the output of a closed-circuit television system. Two primary areas are investigated in this study; 1) a single subject replication of Shelton and Elbert (1967 a&b), in which generalization from a voiceless sound /s/ to its voiced cognate /z/ is tested; 2) a reversal of the Shelton and Elbert (1967 a&b) procedure with a single subject to determine if training on a voiced phoneme /z/ will generalize to its voiceless cognate /s/. A third area of interest will be to see if any change will occur on the phoneticallydissimilar sound /r/ in either subject.

The review of literature pointed out that almost all the data published about the dying patient were the thoughts of those around him rather than his own thoughts. Determination of loudness scales for 1000 Hz stimuli by conventional ratio scaling methods have yielded loudness functions which grow as approximately the 0.54 power of sound pressure. Thus, two-fold loudness differences are equivalent to approximately 10 dB across the auditory continuum. The unidimensional representation of loudness ss a power function of sound intensity implies that if A is twice as loud as B, which, in turn, is twice as loud C, the A will be four times as loud as C. It would seem appropriate that studies be conducted on the development of an oral inhalation dosage form antinauseant. The present project will consist of developing and testing a series of aerosol formulations to determine their feasibility in antinauseant therapy. 1. Do statistically significant differences exist among obtained LCI scores for the following procedures for evoking child language samples: (1) Toys, (2) Verbal Directives, (3) Child-generated Pictures, and (4) Radio Telemetry.

The purpose of the study was to investigate the changes associated with blood pH and different exercise work loads during competition. Finger tip blood samples (1 milliliter), were obtained from 33 male subjects from the varsity swimming and track teams of Eastern Illinois University. The samples were taken prior to exercise and between three and seven and one half minutes after cessation of the event. The blood samples were analyzed with a Radiometer Micro Blood pH Unit. Intravenous administration of tetracycline has been known to result in fatty degeneration of the liver. This study was undertaken in order to elucidate some of the actions of tetracycline on mammalian cells in culture and to attempt to relate these findings to the clinical condition of fatty degeneration of the liver mentioned above.

It is suggested that lipid accumulation occurring after tetracycline administration is possible the result of a decrease in B-lipoprotein synthesis and enzyme inhibition. These factors could result from the high blood levels of tetracycline seen after large and rapid intravenous injections of the drugs into normal patients …
