The study was to provide an approach to help teen-age unwed mothers increase their feelings of self-esteem and thereby attain a conceptual buffer for better coping with life. Self-esteem was defined as individual perception of the worth of oneself relative to that of significant others. The hypothesis tested was that the participating relationship a community health nurse has with a teen-age unwed mother will significantly increase the mother's self-esteem as measured by statistical Q-Sort analysis.

Infiltration to an injury site or area of bacterial contamination by polymorphonuclear leucocytes (or neutrophils) is an early and essential phase of the early inflammatory reaction. Their action on foreign matter is the most critical step taken by body defense mechanisms in the first 24 hours. Anything which interferes with that action, phagocytosis, greatly hampers early inflammation. This study was designed to see the effect of elevated glucose levels on neutrophil phagocytosis in a unique strain of genetically diabetic mice.

An investigation has been conducted to consider the effects of midpalatal suture expansion on the cranial-facial complex. Nine patients were treated that had constricted maxillae. Data was obtained from frontal and lateral headplate radiographs which were taken at four intervals during treatment. The Rocky Mountain Data Systems diagnosis was utilized to interpret the radiographic data.

The data from the nine cases were averaged to obtain a composit [sic] change at each of the four times.

The Hydrodent toothbrush was compared to conventional toothbrush (Lactona # 19) in its effectiveness on removing the plaque, eliminating the pocket depth, and improving the gingival tissue condition.

Forty six male and female subjects with the age range of 18 to 50 years old participated in a 5 month study with 4 week intervals. Each subject received a Hydrodent brush of soft, medium, and hard textures and a conventional toothbrush. The toothbrushes were given randomly and the subject served as his own control.

Dental dry socket has been attributed to a variety of etiologic factors without basic science research. Before a systematic attempt could be undertaken to determine the initiator/s of dry socket, if such exists, an experimental technique had to be developed which could consistently produce dry socket. A dental extraction socket infusion technique was developed with the cat that enabled the investigator to study some of the initiating factors which have been previously suggested as possible etiologic causes for the production of dry socket.

The periapical dental granuloma and cyst is the most frequent sequela of pulpitis. These lesions are always intraosseous and often become quiescent after the acute phases are over, forming a space which primarily consists of chronic inflammatory tissue. This chronic inflammatory tissue usually appears as a one-centimeter area of punched out bone on the x-ray film and is referred to as a dental granuloma. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the histopathological and clinical changes that occurred when a continuous supply of exogenous acid or base, at varying pH, was delivered adjacent to the gingival crest of the monkey. A related goal was to develop a monkey model system which would deliver test solutions continuously and atraumatically, to the experimental gingival sites.

Forty non-treated and twenty-two orthodontically treated cases were selected to determine the relationship of the bucco-lingual position of the mandibular first molar to occlusion and arch stability.

Plaster models and occlusal radiographs were obtained from all the cases. Anterior crowding, intermolar width, molar classification, and molar overhang relative to the basal bone were determined. The modified technique for occlusal radiographs used was found to result in radiographs which were more versatile and accurate when interchanged with the model measurements. A comparison of the effects on recovery while breathing a 97 per cent oxygen mixture and normal compressed atmospheric air after treadmill running was determined among nine male wrestlers at Utah State University. The variables examined were heart rate and percentages of oxygen and carbon dioxide in expired air. The practice of some athletic teams of administering oxygen to participants during time out periods was the motivation for this study.

A great majority of the studies reviewed conclude that oxygen does not play a significant role in aiding recovery from physical activity.

A considerable amount of research has shown that a severe dietary deficiency of protein or vitamins will markedly depress antibody synthesis. Very little work has been done with the effect of mineral deficiencies on antibody production, and no evidence has been presented showing the relationship of the effects of small changes in nutrient intake to the sensitivity of the antibody response to small degrees of malnutrition and the relationship of dietary iron, calcium and vitamin D to the production of antibodies.

The Effects Of Cs Habituation And Duration Of The Directional Modification Of The Cardiac Response In The Guinea Pig (Cavia Procellus), Ray Charles Larson

The present experiment examined the effects of CS habituation and two different levels of CS duration (60 versus 6 sec) on the directional modification of the conditioned cardiac response in the guinea pig. The results indicated that the only reaction to the CS, regardless of prior habituation or CS duration, was a decelerative conditioned HR response. However, habituation to a CS prior to classical aversive conditioning was found to attenuate the magnitude of the bradycardia CR that developed. The bradycardia CR was discussed in terms of being a cardiac component of the orienting response.

The slope of the articular eminence was measured on the cephalograms of 71 subjects. The patients were divided Into three major categories on the basis of skeletal pattern, dental bite type, and Angle's classification. Skeletal pattern was determined by the mandibular plane angle (SNGoGn). High Angle and Low Angle cases were classified by two standard deviations from normal. Dental bite types were divided into Open Dental or Closed Dental according to the absence or presence of anterior disclusion, respectively. Angle's method of classification was also used to divide the sample Into Class I, II, or III malocclusions.

The influence on eating quality of beef of cooking method, sires, mineral (Fe, Mg, Zn, Na, K, and P), lipid, and nitrogen content was determined by objective measurements, sensory evaluations, cooking losses, and chemical analysis. Two adjacent arm and two adjacent rib roasts from 18 Herford animals were used. The arm and rib (sixth to eighth ribs) roasts were deboned, cut in half, and randomly assigned to the conventional or electronic ovens for dry roasting to the medium-rare stage (145 F, 147 F). The purpose was to find the adjustments needed to make acceptable pies, cookies and muffins baked in the electronic oven. The products were evaluated by a taste panel and by objective tests. The results of both tests supported each other.

The best bottom pie crust had an extra tablespoon of liquid added to the pastry and was precooked before the filling was added. It was both flaky and tender.

No leavening and one-fourth more liquid produced the most acceptable cookies. They were more like standard cookie in height, texture, moisture and tenderness.

Barley, cornstarch, crested wheatgrass, glucose, molasses and solka floc were fermented with rumen fluid obtained from sheep that were adapted or unadapted to feed grade biuret (Kedlor) in their diet. Each rumen fluid and substrate combination was subjected to three nitrogen treatments: (1) control, (2) nitrogen added as feed grade biuret and (3) reagent grade biuret in a factoral arrangement of treatments. In vitro fermentations were terminated at 0, 12, 24, and 36 hours and the protein nitrogen insoluble in trichloroacetic acid (TCA) was determined.

Growth and enterotoxin production by Staphylococcus aureus strains, in the presence of different starter [2:1 (V/V) blend of AM₂:ML₈ strains of Streptococcus lactis] levels was investigated. Sterile, 10 per cent non-fat dry milk was inoculated with S. aureus strains capable of producing all types of enterotoxins, and reduced levels of starters; and was incubated at 32 C for 24 hours. The pH and S. aureus population were determined at 2 hour intervals until 8 hours and at 24 hours. The incorporation of 3-¹⁴C-,B-hydroxy-, B-methylglutaric acid (HMG) vii into carotenoids of excised etiolated maize shoots, crude cell free extracts and soluble extracts (20, 000 x g) of maize was investigated. HMG was effectively incorporated into carotenoids of excised shoots, crude extracts and soluble extracts. The excised shoots, crude extracts and soluble extracts incorporated 2-¹⁴C-mevalonic acid (MVA) into carotenoids as well. An important goal of the research was to assess the reliability of information gathered from patients compared to data obtained from an equal number of informants. Proper positioning is used to relieve dyspnea, edema, and fatigue in congestive heart failure patients. According to the review of literature, improved ventilation as measured by specific lung volumes and lung mechanics occurred with upright positioning in normal persons. The effects of specific changes in lung volumes related to position change in congestive heart failure patients has not been documented in literature, although various recommendations related to positioning are made. The purpose of the study was to learn whether a series of nurse-patient interactions would result in changed psychophysiologic functioning in multiple sclerosis patients.

Psychophysiologic relationships were described in the theoretical framework. Literature, reviewed in the areas of disease description and psychotherapeutic approaches to treatment, indicated that there is a high incidence of multiple sclerosis in the United States; that symptoms often include psychological alterations; that there is an emotional component to the illness; that these patients have a need for a psychotherapeutic relationship; and that psychotherapeutic approaches may have beneficial psychophysiologic effects.
